An Attitude for GratitudeI love summer! Even though this is a diff erent summer than I had

planned – there’s still something about the bright sun that warms my soul. Maybe it’s the way we are conditioned at a young age to take a break from school during summer or that there’s more daylight to accomplish things. In summer, people even give gratitude for a storm for its much needed rain or a break from hectic summer activity schedules. I have not heard that same gratitude for a snowstorm! Whatever the reason, it just seems easy to be grateful for a summer day.

Some of my best memories are childhood summers, when the days seemed endlessly peaceful and were fi lled with play. Today’s hurried pace of our culture that keeps us going with constant distractions seems in direct contradiction to our childhood summers. I think that’s why so many of us long for summer as a chance to unwind, a chance to refl ect, a chance to strive for greater peace. But what we really are seeking is a life of grace, faith-fi lled living that is promised to us through Christ.

Th is month, we read Psalms in our Read Th rough the Bible initiative. Psalm 90, verse 12 reminds us to live wisely: “Live each day as a gift, with a sense of purpose and intentionality.” I invite you to live each day, with a sense of purpose. Get to church and hear God’s grace-

fi lled message. Live more peacefully and live more fully.

Consider the wonderful place our summer camp has in the heart of so many people – could it be because we start and end each day in worship at camp? Of course it is! What makes camp special is not its beautiful location or wonderful staff , which it clearly has. Camp is special because it breaks us from our routine, it focuses us on Christ and reminds us to worship.

If you are in need of peace, break your summer routine. Worship at a midweek service at the Conference & Retreat Center, join us Sunday mornings at either campus, or at an evening service at Cathedral of the Pines. If you can’t make it to Farmington, Minneapolis, Victoria, or Lutsen, then join us online for live streaming of our Sunday morning worship service. Wherever you are, whatever you are doing, take time to warm your soul with the message of God.

When we put Christ at the center of our life, we make the most of every opportunity we are given and every gift we receive. We all are given the chance to love more deeply, to make the most of each moment. Sometimes all we need to do is stop and listen.

Summer music at mount olivet

Yesterday today and tomorrowTh ere are two days in every week

about which we should not worry,Two days which should be kept free of fear and

apprehension.

One of these days is YESTERDAY,With its mistakes and cares,

Its faults and blunders,Its aches and pains.

YESTERDAY has passed forever beyond our control.

All the money in the world cannot bring back YESTERDAY.

We cannot undo a single act we performed; We cannot erase a single word we said.

YESTERDAY is gone.

Th e other day we should not worry about is TOMORROW

With its possible adversities, its burdens, its larger promise.

TOMORROW is also beyond our immediate control.

TOMORROW, the sun will rise,Either in splendor or behind a mask of clouds,

But it will rise.Until it does, we have no stake in TOMORROW

For it is as yet unborn.

Th is leaves only one day – TODAY.Any man can fi ght the battles of just one day.

It is only when you and I add the burdens of those two awful eternities

– YESTERDAY and TOMORROW –Th at we break down.

It is not the experience of TODAY that drives men mad.

It is remorse or bitterness for something which happened YESTERDAY

And the dread of what TOMORROW may bring.

Let us, therefore, live but ONE day at a time.

“For where two or three are gathered in my name, I am there among them.” – MattHeW 18:20

Have you ever noticed how you just feel good when you’re at church? You feel like your best version of yourself? Th at no matter what is going on outside, the minute you step into the building, somehow everything just seems like it’s going to be okay. And that even if things don’t turn out exactly as you have hoped and prayed, you sense you’ll make it through … that somehow everything really will be okay.

To me that is the gift of community in Christ. Outside we are attempting to carry this massive, unwieldy, boulder of life. Some days the enormity of it all is so large we can’t see our way over or under or around it. It’s all we can do to just get where we need to be – lugging that big ol’ stone around. Yet the minute we walk through the doors of church, it’s as if God’s children come to our aid and gather together to share the load. It is no longer our burden alone to carry, but something we do together. Some days we need our load lightened, and some days we’re able to lighten another’s load.

We gather in God’s house on joy and laughter-fi lled days, and on sorrow and question-fi lled days. We can depend on one another. I see it day in and day out, year in and year out. Making church your home, making it your family, is what God intends for us: being in fellowship with one another on the bright sunny days, so that when the winds pick up and the clouds roll in, we’ll know just exactly where we need head for shelter. – PastOR HaMMeRsten

Sacred Space in SummerAaah, summer. It’s our time to slow down and savor this precious

season. Time to reconnect with family, nature, and ... God? Let’s be honest. Sometimes summertime is a sabbatical from church. Our “slowing down” translates into jam-packed calendars and duff el bags as we head to the cabin, a campsite, or a road trip adventure. We buckle our seatbelts, but we loosen our ties to our Sunday routine, our weekly check-in with our Lord. Our schedules may fl uctuate in the summer, but we can still create that sacred space for God’s Spirit. We can still keep our connection to Christ whenever, wherever we are. Here are three ways Mount Olivet can help you connect to Christ when you are on the go this season:

1. MObile Faith. Online faith education at your fi ngertips. If you want to deepen your faith, but can’t squeeze a class into your current schedule, consider online learning through our new program, MObile Faith. Study the Bible or spirituality topics like prayer and meditation, or explore wellness and relationships through the lens of faith. Each class includes 4-6 lessons built around 5-minute videos, and the entire class takes only 45 minutes to complete. Spread out your study over a week or two, or digest it all at once. Web-based classes include questions for deeper refl ection and an online forum to discuss the content with fellow Mount Olivet members and friends. We offi cially will launch this initiative in the fall, but you don’t have to wait until then. Contact Liz Otteson at [email protected] to request your online membership, then plug in to MObile Faith through your computer, tablet, or smartphone. Cost: $10 for one class, $30 for one year of unlimited classes.

2. Read Through the Bible. Daily devotions at home or on the road. Over a thousand Mount Olivet members are growing in their faith through daily devotional Bible reading. If you haven’t been a part of this program, we invite you to join us. If you have taken a break, we invite you to return, reenergized and recommitted. Either way, don’t worry about catching up on what you’ve missed. Jump in right where we are. Visit the “Read Th rough the Bible” page of our website for the “Daily Schedule” to fi nd which day in the NRSV Daily Bible we currently are reading. Th e “Weekly Emails” section stores current and previous emails with context for the readings. If you want more theological insight to the prophetic books of the Bible – whether you are reading through the Bible or not – join us for the next Large Group Introduction on Monday, August 17, 7-8pm, with Dr. Mark Th rontveit at the West Campus.

3. My Mt Olivet. Church goes with you wherever you go. You probably already know you can listen to the 11am Mpls service on the radio and online. But what if it’s 7pm on Tuesday night? Pull out your smartphone or tablet and explore the My Mt Olivet app (available for free from the App Store and Google Play). You can listen to an audio recording of the full service through “Previous Services.” If you want to focus on just the sermon, go to “Media Center.” For more information, go to “My Mt Olivet App” via our “Get Connected” page at www.mtolivet.org.

May this summer take you on amazing adventures to wonderful places! And may you fi nd sacred spaces in your schedule to journey with Jesus through this season. – LiZ OttesOn, aDULt LeaRninG teaM

AdultsWhat builds a stronger body and a closeness to God?

When you hear “yoga,” do you immediately picture young, fl exible bodies that twist and balance in ways “only the young could manage”? Or, is it connected primarily with non-Christian mysticism in your mind? Yes, both can be true, but both also are misconceptions, especially if you are speaking of Holy Yoga. Holy Yoga and Chair Holy Yoga help you to improve your balance and body alignment, increase your core strength, and learn breathing and relaxation techniques in a Christian context of scripture, prayer, and meditation.

While Holy Yoga is done in a more traditional manner (on a mat) requiring participants to get down

to and up from the fl oor, Chair Holy Yoga utilizes modifi ed poses using a chair as a prop – no fl oor work is required. Don’t assume that means it’s too easy to be of much worth, however. Janet Anderson, Ruth Beckstrom, and Kirky Otto, three Chair Holy Yoga regulars, have participated for more than three years and are quick to say how much they have benefi tted both physically and spiritually.

Holy Yoga (on a mat) is off ered periodically at the West Campus (watch for opportunities to be posted), but is on hiatus at the Mpls Campus until a new instructor can be found – soon, we hope! However, Chair Holy Yoga is going strong and meets every Monday and Wednesday from 12:15pm to 1pm in the lower level of the 1700 Chapel. Th e cost is $5 per session. Th ere is no pre-registration required – just come to the class. Both men and women are invited to participate. – caROL tHROntveit, aDULt MinistRY teaM LeaDeR

Adults YoU can make a Big difference in the life of a child!

Last summer, 20 Mount Olivet volunteers traveled to Washington, IL, to bring Camp Noah to children whose community was destroyed by a tornado. Th e volunteers consisted of teens, teachers, social workers, a mental health professional, and others who love to spend time with children. Th ey led small groups that did art work, played games, and read stories, but most importantly they listened ... listened to the children tell how their lives had changed since their or their friends’ homes were destroyed and how they wished they had their old bedrooms back, missed friends who had moved away, and now felt afraid when the clouds turn dark.

What is Camp Noah? It is a day camp program specifi cally designed to serve children who have been through a natural disaster. When disaster hits, families are working so hard to recover that often the needs of the children are not a number one priority. At the same time, children often don’t share their feelings for fear of causing more pain to their already overwhelmed parents. Camp Noah gives these children a chance to tell their stories, gather with friends, laugh, and have fun. Th e children hear the story of Noah and how he survived a disaster. Th ey hear of a loving God who does not leave us in times of disaster.

On April 10, 2015, another deadly tornado struck Illinois, destroying two towns. Children once again need our help to heal their hearts. TWENTY VOLUNTEERS ARE NEEDED TO PROVIDE A CAMP NOAH

EXPERIENCE IN FAIRDALE, IL, AUGUST 2-8. Can you help? As a volunteer, you will lead or assist small groups of 10 children through a faith-based curriculum. Th e only requirement is that you enjoy working with children and complete the provided training. Th e cost of the trip is approximately $300. Th e impact is best told in the words of children and parents who have benefi ted from Camp Noah in the past:

CHILDREN: “I almost wish we would have another tornado so Camp Noah could come back.” “Th is was the greatest week of my whole summer.” “I’m not afraid of storms anymore.”

PARENTS: “I can’t believe that you came all of this way to help our children!” “We felt like no one cared what we were going through. To have you here and know that someone cares has meant the world to us!” “My child is fi nally sleeping through the night!”

Interested in being part of the Camp Noah team? Need more details? Contact: Cindy Johnson 612.578.6830 [email protected].

Note: Each child also receives a fl eece blanket that they use for comfort throughout the week. If you cannot volunteer, but would consider donating some fl eece for the blankets, please contact Cindy.

Building Strong Relationships without technology Th is past winter I interviewed every counselor for the 2015 camping season. Th ese volunteer high school students LOVE Cathedral of the Pines. Th e fi rst question I ask each counselor is “What do you appreciate about COP.” I would say that over 60% of the kids said that they loved NOT having their phone for a week. Here are some of their direct quotes:

• “oh my gosh, to get away from my technology addiction”• “no phones, nothing like it, I come home, it’s like I am cleansed”• “no social media, everyone is nice”• “no electronics – best policy – we are forced to be face to face –

it’s old fashioned”• “love the no technology…I have no need or want for it up there”• “without my phone I notice the beauty, the nature”• “no technology ... never bored”• “at camp – press pause on life, at home – press play again”• “no phones, it is healthy for us, people connect diff erently”

I believe the strength of Cathedral of the Pines is built around face-to-face relationships. I know that technology plays an important role in each of our lives. I also believe that it is okay to take a break from it. At camp we are off ered the perfect opportunity to slow down and be away from daily distractions. We then have time to connect with others, ourselves, and God in a diff erent and meaningful way. – KRisti YOUnGDaHL, catHeDRaL OF tHe Pines caMP DiRectOR

Our generation is known for relying on technology to get us through our everyday lives. I’m sure every teenager has witnessed a comment from an adult referring to how addicted they are to their cellphones. Some adults even state that it is not our fault that we are addicted to our phones and technology, it is just how our generation has been brought up. I’ll be the fi rst to admit that this is 100% true. Today, technology plays a huge role in everyday life. It is available and easy to turn to when boredom hits. However, at camp boredom rarely exists. There is never a time or place where the temptation even occurs. Not having technology surprisingly has a huge impact on COP experiences. One is completely free of the constant gossip and drama that transpires on social media. Everyone begins to connect on a more personal level. They automatically become more friendly and talkative, even if it is only because they do not have their phones. Instead of being on social media at night, there are deep, memorable talks that allow friendships to grow and become stronger. Everyone begins to relate on a higher level – their faith. That is one major reason why everlasting friendships begin at camp. The little things also become more noticeable, like the white cross across Caribou Lake, or the bright stars that fi ll the sky at night. Everyone truly begins to enjoy the beauty that surrounds them everywhere up at Cathedral of the Pines. – JULia JaLLO

learn. Play. Perform. Bond. Each year, during Summertime Players! camp, we are reminded of how fast kids learn, and just how much fun it is to sing and dance with friends. Th e fully-choreographed show that is learned, memorized, and performed in only eight days, is just one portion of the STP! camp. Th e speed in which the kids learn and are taught by our incredible staff is in itself rather remarkable – but, what is truly at the core of STP! is what we see in the days leading up to the performance. Each day, we watch kids with all diff erent levels of talent and ability join together to create something bigger than themselves. We see kids from many diff erent schools branching out, making new friends, and just having fun together. We observe kids working hard to learn and try out some new talents, and feeling safe and encouraged to do so. With each day that leads up to the performance, we see their confi dence grow and the smiles just keep getting bigger and bigger! – DR. BeveRLY cLaFLin, DiRectOR OF MOUnt OLivet WORsHiP & MUsic

Summertime Players! is an amazing summer camp that’s different than any other for a couple reasons. It’s a performance camp that is inclusive to all, where kids spend a portion of every day dancing and singing followed by fun afternoon activities. There are three main programs within Summertime Players!, each one unique from the other. There are the 7th- through 9th-grade campers of all performing abilities and skill levels who work together to learn the songs and dances for the

performance. Then there is STP2!, which consists of high school students with more advanced performing skills. Last but not least,

there is Team STP!, which includes other high school students who counsel the 7th- through 9th-graders. It’s the coolest thing to witness all of the different ages and abilities come together for the fi nal performance. Everyone involved in Summertime Players! works extremely hard day in and day out in order to be completely prepared for the performance, which creates strong bonds of friendship between the participants. It’s a super fun experience! – sOPHia sPence

StewardshipTo me, giving is living! Th e personal fulfi llment I have received from being active in Mount Olivet service opportunities far exceeds my eff ort. I have felt my faith growing at a Homebound Luncheon as I hear about riding to school in a covered wagon from a new friend; when observing the huge smile of gratitude from helping move someone into a new apartment; and after planting trees and fl owers around the new church additions. However, I feel this Christian spirit most when simply sharing a friendly conversation in the Narthex on Sunday mornings. Th e joy I feel as I serve in the Mount Olivet community is like none I have ever known. – teD WaLtZ

I personally would say that Mount Olivet has always taught me that we are a servant congregation. We are Jesus’ hands and feet put here to serve others when we can. What I get out of doing things for others – off ering a smile, giving a hug, providing a ride to the Homebound Luncheons, etc. – is pure joy! Mount Olivet off ers so many opportunities to serve! – Dianne Mccain

I truly feel I get more out of what I give than what I give to others. Being a part of the Caregiver program is one example. I visit my friend at the Vets Home, and leave each visit being so grateful for him. Picking up folks for the Homebound events is such an uplifting experience – the people are so thankful for this little thing. Meeting and greeting people at worship is such a warm experience – it takes less muscle to smile than frown! – cHaRLie Mccain

Becoming a member of Mount Olivet many years ago, l found myself picking up where I had left off in other churches where I had been a member – getting active in areas and organizations where help was needed. Mount Olivet off ered me choices that fulfi lled my life – it is more precious to give than to receive. For me – whether it was with children at Mount Olivet Rolling Acres, Sunday School, cooking at COP, or countless organizations in between, to the present time in the Caregiving area where I visit with the elderly – the time has been so rewarding. Th eir smiles are so heartwarming. My heart overfl ows with the joy, satisfaction, and love that Mount Olivet has given me in the process of volunteering in all areas of ministry. – sHiRLeY HUsKins

What does it mean to be a giver? Do you have to donate millions of dollars to a hospital wing? Do you have to organize a star-studded event for 1,000? Do you have to end poverty as we know it? While all wonderful, being a giver does not have to be big. One seemingly small act of kindness is all that is needed. Every day we are given opportunities to give, to share, to be a part of God’s world in positive and meaningful ways.

Th e Pastoral Care department has story upon story of giving and givers. Some stories are the result of spontaneous moments, while others are a bit more planned. People who give of themselves and their time to help others are living out the mission of Mount Olivet, in particular, Becoming like Jesus Christ through servanthood. And we thank them for their gifts!

On this page are examples of wonderful Mount Olivet and Pastoral Care “givers” who share a few ways they give, and why.

God is giving us opportunities to give with a generous and joyful heart every day. Look around. How can you give today? – Katie stevensOn, DiRectOR OF steWaRDsHiP
