JULY 2021

AS WE GATHER

Summer is hectic. The Old Testament is often intimidating and hard to understand. I bet that very few people would disagree with these two sentences. Here we are at the beginning of the month of July already! after a month of shifting gears to summer mode, I feel like it is going to be over by the time I get used to it. There’s so much camping to be done! There are so many bonfires to be lit! There are so many lakes to swim and be fished! There are so many youth activities to run around to!

I’m surprised that I have even more alarm clocks going off throughout the day to remind me of appointments, meetings, and times to pick up the kids than I did during the school year. How about you?

Maybe it is because we’re eas-ing back into the routines that we missed last summer. Maybe it is because we’re making up for lost time. Maybe it’s because Summers have always been this way, but I am just now noticing.

No matter the reason, Summer is always a reminder for me of the importance of routinely dwelling in scripture and prayer - whether it is for 5 minutes or 45 minutes.

I mentioned a few weeks ago that I would give you some devo-tional resources for this summer. There is currently a summer-long scripture series that takes us through the call of David. It is a bit like a long summer road trip through the scenic byway of God’s people’s history. These selections serve as historic markers along the way that we can stop with and reflect. I have found that reading through the Old Testament at a slower pace makes it much less in-timidating and hard to understand.

This summer I invite you to grab a study bible (Or let me know if you need one!) and take the scenic tour through 1 and 2 Samuel and a bit of 1 Kings. Don’t be discouraged if you are ahead or behind the dates for each reading. They are just a guide to help you pace yourself

CHURCH COUNCILMembers Present: Pastor Bryan, Bob Mork, Allen Dahlseng, Randy Elenberger, Michalene Martin, Scott Gullickson, and Kori Gullickson. Guest: Dennis Jones

President Bob called the meeting to order.Devotions by Pastor Bryan: Racoon vs. Beagle-True Story!

Secretary’s Report: May minutes approved as printed. Motion to approve Secretary’s report was made by Scott. Michalene seconded. Treasurer’s Report: Month Income: $6,193.43

Monthly Expenses: $9,889.13Net Income: $-3,695.70Motion to approve the Treasurer’s report was made by Allen. Randy seconded. Approved.

Old Business:• Virtual Synod Assembly: A

big thank you to Ron Nelsen & Randy Elenberger for taking the time to attend the first historical Virtual Synod Assembly! The assembly was two weekends presented online to appoint a new bishop Dee (Diane) Pederson of the ELCA Southwestern Synod.

• Wall Hanging: Dennis Jones and Allen Dahlseng took

some rough measurements of the wall hanging that was removed from Discovery Days Pre-school and it was discussed where to hang it at St. Paul’s. We talked about the wall in the back corner of the sanctuary-next to table for all the sign ups and the American flag. Allen & Dennis will take a look to see if it would fit on that wall and possibly place it there.

• Quilt Raffle: The quilt raffle will be ending this coming Sunday June 27th, and plan to display them up in front of the church for viewing during services for both in person and online.

New Business:• Parking Lot: Dennis Jones

talked to us at the beginning of the meeting in regards to MnDOT project in a few years to give us an idea of the changes they will be doing. He talked with the project manager for MnDOT and the projected time for the road construction in Lowry will be set for 2024. He mentioned that all of the trees on the boulevard (west of the church) would be coming down. He also stated that the width of the road along with a sidewalk will be wider than it is currently. After discussing about the changes that will be happening in 2024, it was decided to wait until the road construction is complete before going forward with paving the north parking lot. We talked about possibly just doing the south parking lot and getting a final estimate for paving it along with an estimate for the paint striping as well.

as you journey along the scenes of our history. Come and see the way God continues to shower grace and faithful love to us even amid situations where we “royally” screw up. Get it? That was a pun because David was a king.

A few of these readings will show up during our Sunday morn-ing services this summer and fall.

Give them a read and let me know if you have any questions about what you are reading. Who knows, maybe you can help me write a sermon on the text!

May God continue to bless you with rest, recreation, and renewal this Summer.

God’s Peace, Pastor Bryan

The secretary’s report was read. A motion was made to approve the report, was seconded and approved.

The treasurer’s report was read with the following balances on hand: $1,767.53 general, $1,444.91 kitch-en $1,479.67 mission, $986.49 altar. A motion to place the report on file was approved.

OLD BUSINESS:

We still need people to sign up for watering the planters at church. Lori Mork is in the office if anyone needs a sub.

A new sewing machine has been purchased for quilt-ing, along with attachments for a cost of $255. Lori Mork will also have Edna’s Singer sewing machine checked over as a back-up.

A short discussion was held on the Fall Supper re-garding dessert. It was decided that we should leave any final decisions up to the fall supper/work com-mittees. A short discussion was also held on whether to keep our regular Wednesday night date for the supper or change it for this year. It was unanimous that we leave the date of the fall supper as the first Wednesday in October.

A discussion was held on cleaning the stoves in the kitchen. A motion was made to approve cleaning and repairing the stoves with the possibility of splitting the cost with the council and/or the city. The motion was seconded and approved.

NEW BUSINESS:

There have been some questions about the new re-cycling protocols that were implemented during the shutdown. The signs were looked over with still some uncertainty about exactly what can be recycled traditionally or organically. Lori Mork will look into finding more specifics on this.

Circles were meeting Monday, June 14 and Thursday, June 17.

A motion was made to adjourn. It was seconded and approved.

The meeting closed with the Lord’s Prayer
