OUTSTANDING STUDENT WORKS ...

Baker’s Lost Touch Antonia, Year 12

A pigeon nests between railways Drying its wings before the force Of metal, encrusting my airways

So I hope only for a golden string

Upon its wing.

She cries with no mouth At a collective emptiness,

an empty collective.

A storm furrows then mounts the restless canopy

Of whirring cogs and bloody edges unconditionally patched

Prepared are the ants, our suffering vanity

Passing the other, mask to mask.

A circle meets a star A crescent the rhombus,

That won’t do, don’t disagree A star through a star hole,

Respect reality.

She watches she groans At a collective emptiness,

an empty collective.

Railings bow down to my touch And doorframes arch tall above

my form, A mother writhes in the depths

of a cold cellar To which,

A light switch you seldom press.

You miss the caress.

Her warm hands dusted No longer trusted,

To knead the body of Christ As perfectly as the lifeless silver

hands do.

‘Cause they too Obey the view

Of rolled down windshields and revved up engines, Cracking her skin.

Flee for your life! Do not look behind you.

2020 HSC Changes We continue to support our Year 12 cohort as they prepare for the Higher School Certificate. The commitment to their studies has been inspiring and we are relieved that they have recovered from their time away from face to face learning.

A summary of changes published by NSW Educational Standards Authority (NESA) this week for the 2020 HSC can be found on pages 7 and 8 of this newsletter.

NESA have partnered with ReachOut Australia to provide resources for students as they approach the HSC. All students and parents/caregivers are encouraged to visit the NESA website through the following links: https://educationstandards.nsw.edu.au/wps/portal/nesa/covid-19/coronavirus-advice

https://au.reachout.com/collections/stressed-about-study-during-coronavirus

School Uniform As the mercury continues fall, we are well aware of the need for our students to be warm and well. Pennant Hills High School together with the P&C have prepared for the cold weather with plenty of school uniform options for our students.

The school jacket and/or jumper worn over the school’s white shirt with a white undershirt are perfect protection for wind and cold. There are also PHHS scarves available for purchase.

Hoodies, tracksuit pants, leggings and beanies/berets are not part of our uniform.

Thank you to all families for their support in ensuring our school uniform is strictly adhered to.

PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

Welcome back to full-time on-campus face to face teaching and learning Last week students returned to full-time on-campus learning at Pennant Hills High School (PHHS).

After the successful return of Year 12 full-time two weeks prior, we were overjoyed to welcome back all grades on site, together.

Judging by the excitement, it was obvious that our students were equally as enthusiastic to get back to routine. The classrooms and playground were once again filled with the sounds of engaged learners and students having fun.

Sport The return to on campus learning has meant an adjustment to some areas of our curriculum. In particular, interschool sport has been cancelled until further notice. To replace this very important activity, our PDHPE faculty kicked off the “2020 Pan Cup” last week.

Each grade is divided into teams which rotate through one of four sports every week. The teams are awarded points based on their performance. Some rules have been modified in order for this to work effectively. Students are playing modified soccer, ultimate frisbee, volleyball and basketball.

Mr Schmidt, Sport Coordinator, has been working tirelessly on the program, even negotiating with me for a grand prize to be awarded to the winning team in each year group.

Thank you to Mr Schmidt and all our sport teachers for the hard work and enthusiasm in which they have approached and embraced the new version of Thursday afternoon sport at Penno.

Student Leadership Council (SLC) Selection Application forms for students interested in joining the 2020-2021 SLC have now been disseminated.

In addition to the application and voting process, our Senior student leaders interested in running for an Executive position are interviewed before the final selection is made.

The Student Leadership Council continues to develop outstanding leaders in our school community. They serve as exemplary role models to their peers, and work hard to build and maintain the reputation of our school within our local community.

We are extremely proud of the voice our SLC provides to all students through their respective representatives. Through their involvement in our leadership program, they make an enormous contribution to building the great culture that exemplifies our Penno Pride.

2019 Annual School Report (ASR) The 2019 ASR is now available for viewing through our website. Thank you to Mrs Fiona Payne, Deputy Principal who authored and coordinated the report.

CONTACTING TEACHERS AND MAKING APPOINTMENTS

A reminder to all parents and caregivers that the correct protocol for contacting teachers or Executive staff is as follows:

telephone or email the school with your query or to request a meeting. Please include a brief description of the reason for the meet;

make an appointment for a meeting at a mutually convenient time.

Please note, all visitors must sign in at Public Reception immediately upon entering school grounds.

This is a Health and Safety directive and assists us with monitoring the whereabouts of our guests should an emergency arise.

Teachers will be contacted by our Administrative Staff once visitors are signed in.

Thank you for adhering to this policy.

SCHOOL ATTENDANCE POLICY

Unexplained Late Arrivals The Sentral system will issue a second slip to all late arrivals who do not have a note to justify why they have not arrived at school on time. The slip will have the student’s name, class, date and time of arrival together with provision for an explanation and signature from their parent or carer. All late slips must be signed and returned to Student Reception. Slips can be placed in the Absence Notes box located on the front counter.

Unexplained absences will be recorded as Unjustified unless a note or slip is sent to the school and will appear on the students’ School Report under attendance. Amendments to students’ attendance cannot be made later than two weeks of the original absence.

Absences All student absences from school must be explained in writing by a parent or caregiver. If your child is going to be absent from school for any reason, please phone the office as soon as possible to let us know and, most importantly, follow up with a note on your student’s first day back at school.

The Department Of Education requires that an explanation for absence MUST be provided to the school within 7 days from the first day of any period of absence. We are required to record as unjustified any absence not supported by a note from a parent/caregiver. A medical certificate is required for consecutive absences longer than 2 days.

Holidays and travel outside of school holiday periods need approval from the school if the time away from class exceeds four school days. A form can be obtained from Student Reception for all extended leave. This must be completed and returned with a copy of travel documents ie. tickets or itinery for each student applying for leave.

Please contact Student Reception on 9473 5000 if you have any questions.

CANTEEN NEWS ONLINE ORDERING

Pennant Hills High School Canteen is very happy to advise that we are now accepting lunch orders online. All you need to do is download the app Qkr! by MasterCard, set up a profile and start ordering.

Lunch orders can be placed daily no later than 9.15am or for your convenience you can order up to 2 weeks in advance. You pay online via the Qkr! by MasterCard app and your child can then collect their lunch from the dedicated lunch order window.

The advantages of using Qkr! by MasterCard are: your child is guaranteed to receive their choice of lunch and no long queues to wait in.

If you have ordered and you know your child or the student who ordered will be sick and not in on the day, just call the canteen on 9473 5020 by 9.30am, let us know and we can hold the order over until the student returns.

We are very proud of our menu and its compliance with the NSW Government Healthy Canteen Strategy. We really look forward to making lunch times easier for our students and receiving your online orders soon.

WELCOME BACK TO ENGLISH

Throughout the tumult and upheaval of recent weeks, students in Year 7 have been studying poetry. In an era of digital literacy and online learning, the importance of studying poetry can be overlooked and neglected. Not so at Pennant Hills High School though, where students are encouraged to give voice to their creative and imaginative impulses.

As well as providing a flexible form to express emotions and ideas, the study of poetry gives students a deep understanding of the way language can be used to shape meaning and inspire thought. It provides opportunities to engage with the rules of syntax and grammar, and then provokes students to either apply or subvert these conventions for specific purposes.

Poetry can be defined in many different ways and applied for varying reasons - Wordsworth described poetry as "the spontaneous overflow of powerful feelings which takes its origin from emotion recollected in tranquillity". Coleridge had a simpler explanation, that poetry was "the best words in the best order". Whichever view you take, we hope you will enjoy the following works from our Year 7 students. Congratulations to Year 12 student Antonia for her outstanding poem, inspired by the verse of T.S. Eliot, featured on the front cover.

The Tech Bubble Crash A poem for the 21st Century by Finn As the 2000s approached, Tech was on the rise, Companies were battling to claim the prize Of being a multimillionaire And putting smaller companies to despair. As 2000 arrived, Investors threw all their money, now deprived, Towards any company with .com Even though most of these companies were far from Succeeding and were bound to fail. Companies began to cause panic With the thought of sharing their tech stocks … that was just manic 10% the market dropped in a week 2001 rolled around And most big tech companies could not be found. Throwing thousands of dollars on the ground, A lesson to be learnt From the tech bubble crash Is to assess the consequences Of giving money to the pincers Of big companies on the rise That may never reach their prize

The Escape – Gemma Click, Swipe, Click Tap, scroll, tap Bing, swoosh, bing. Bright glowing screens blinding my

thoughts Fingers flying texting Trapped in a digital world Messages in then messages out Selfies, memes and tweets I’m so addicted it’s like a craving How will i ever escape Swapping between devices Constantly being controlled Rude, nasty and mean messages How horrible they make us feel I need to escape To walk outside To see the beauty of nature The world of stunning real life

To be immersed in something living To escape the digital world controlling me To escape the dreadful world of technology.

My childhood beach - where I learnt to surf Hana

Crashing waves on calm blue waters White sand under your feet

Beach birds running races back and forth Seagulls flying side by side Pelicans dropping out of the sky Catching fishy treats in their stride

The warmth of the sun as you search for the treasured shell Waves turn into gliding streams of water Foam and sand help to reveal the places where seashells dwell!

Sand castles keep everyone busy for hours Filling sand buckets and building moats Everyone enjoys the breeze as we see sailboats!

Blueys Beach - Abigail Duncan

The sand between my toes,

The air in my hair,

Nothing seems to matter,

At least I don’t really care.

The water is perfect,

It's as clear as glass,

The rocks on the side,

Are covered in grass.

The sandbars are perfect,

As I run along them,

The waves are marvellous,

When they crash against my thumb.

One day of perfection,

Is all I need,

With the massive collection,

Of shells at my feet.

Seagull after seagull,

My dog’s exhausted,

Along with the eagles,

In Autumn.

The only place on earth,

That I really need,

Is filled with happiness,

It’s Blueys Beach.
