Prayer for Hurricane Season

O God, Master of this passing world, hear the humble voices of your children. The Sea of Galilee obeyed your order

and returned to its former quietude. You are still the Master of land and sea. We live the shadow of a danger over which we have no control: the gulf, like a provoked and angry giant, can awake from its seeming lethargy, overstep its conventional boundaries, invade our land and spread chaos and disaster. Dur-ing this hurricane season we turn to you, loving Father. Spare us from past tragedies whose memories are still so vivid and whose wounds seem to refuse to heal with the passing of time. O Virgin, Star of the Sea, Our Beloved Mother, we ask you to plead with you Son in our behalf, so that spared from the calam-ities common to this area and animated with a true spirit of grat-itude, we will walk in the footsteps of your divine Son to reach heavenly Jerusalem where a stormless eternity awaits us. Amen. Bishop Maurice Shexnayder

From the Pastor’s Desk

As we pass the mid-point of this month of June, and find ourselves immersed in a Louisiana summer, it might be good to notice that we are also more than halfway through this Jubilee Year of Mercy. At this point, I’d like to recall that fact, as we call to mind some of the fundamental ideas of this year of grace.

As we’ve reflected upon Mercy this year, I’ve found that there are three movements, or moments in devel-oping a heart of Mercy. The first is when we stop to reflect on the Mercy of God. Pope Francis has said that “The name of God is Mercy”, a way of highlighting this essential characteristic which God has revealed to us countless times, in countless ways. Mercy complements and deepens his justice, and opens the way to salvation. Pope Francis wrote of God: “His being merciful is concretely demonstrated in his many actions throughout the history of salvation, where his goodness prevails over punishment and destruction.”

However, the fact that God is merciful means little to us, without the second movement of mercy, were we explore, recognize and accept our own need for mercy. Sometimes that can begin by reflecting on ways in which we have in the past experienced mercy — when we have received some gift, some grace which we knew well was undeserved and unearned. It is when we admit that we are creatures in need of mercy, and surrender to the one Source of that mercy, that we can enter in truth into a life-giving relationship with our God, and surrender our-selves to his loving kindness and faithfulness.

Already, as we have entered into the mystery of mercy, we have tasted of its goodness in and through ex-periencing God’s mercy, which we now admit we cannot live without. But a Catholic spirituality can never stop at that relationship between me and my God. If I need mercy, then what about those around me, those who per-haps have harmed or offended me? Recognizing my need for mercy opens my heart to the third movement of mercy, when we reach out to the heart of the other. In his Message for Lent, Pope Francis wrote:

“God’s mercy transforms human hearts; it enables us, through the experience of a faithful love, to become merciful in turn. In an ever new miracle, divine mercy shines forth in our lives, inspiring each of us to love our neighbor and to devote our-selves to what the Church’s tradition calls the spiritual and corporal works of mercy. These works remind us that faith finds ex-pression in concrete everyday actions meant to help our neighbors in body and spirit: by feeding, visiting, comforting and in-structing them. On such things will we be judged. “

God’s Heart — Our Hearts — Their Hearts . In these three movements of Mercy, we discover the heart of a God who calls us to be Merciful like the Father.
