In fact, beginning a regular exercise program in your 50s may be as ef-fective as quitting smoking when it comes to reducing your risk for early death. For recent ex-smokers, regular exercise may also double your chances of remaining smoke-free after 12 months. Sources: British Medical Journal

Pepsi & Frito-Lay superbowl tailgate Winner

Congratulations to Shirley Holdaway! She was the grand prize winner of the Pepsi & Frito-Lay Superbowl Tailgate drawing that was held at the Parris Island MCX. She won a Panasonic, 50” 3-D TV, a Panasonic 3-D BluRay player, and a pair of 3-D glasses.

tle of attrition in which the 2nd Battalion, 4th Marine Regiment, numbering only 800 men, victoriously battled 10,000 or more NVA. His remarkable life and career is recounted in “No-ble Warrior,” a book that has it all: exciting first-person eyewitness account of historic battle; the history of the development of tactics and strategies used in today’s war on terror; and a compelling story of leadership in action and individual courage in combat.

“sly Company of People Who Care: A novel” by Rahul Bhattacharya. Looking for adven-ture, a 26-year-old cricket journalist leaves his job in Bombay and travels to Guyana, a for-gotten but beautiful colonial society where he’s enthralled by the place where descen-dants of the enslaved and indentured have made a new world. It’s here that he meets Jan, a traveling companion who will accompany him beyond Guyanese borders in his search for life’s meaning. (First Novel)

“Warm Bodies: A novel” by Isaac Marion. R is a zombie with no memories, no identity, and no pulse. But he does have dreams. While he doesn’t enjoy killing people, he does en-joy riding escalators and listening to Frank Sinatra. Then he falls in love with a human.

A Bookworm’s CornerBy Samantha Bowersox

“Insatiable” by Meg Cabot

Meena Harper is a writer for the soap op-era “Insatiable.” Her new boss wants her to come up with a storyline involving vam-pires. Meena is reluctant at first, not being a fan of vampires, until she meets Lucien Antonescu at a neighbor’s dinner party. He becomes her inspiration for a counter-storyline for Insatiable in which a vampire slayer comes to town. Unfortunately, her life seems to be imitating the soap opera she writes for.

trouble if not taken into consideration.

Our message is to always stay mindful of re-ducing the risk factors associated with the use of alcohol. Everyone has a responsibility to themselves and to others with maintaining an increased awareness and a respect for the dangers that alcohol can impose if used in an irresponsible manner.

Prime for Life reminds us that the bulk of risk factors associated with alcohol are in our control. These risk factors, of course, are the choices we make with our use of alcohol. If we make high risk choices (drinking 5 or more drinks in a sitting for example-binge drinking) we increase our risk of impairment problems, and thus, put others at risk as well.

Be mindful of the affects alcohol will have on your body/brain. The body can only metabo-lize an ounce of alcohol an hour (differences in this formula depend on gender, body weight, stomach contents, etc...). Use of alcohol with prescription or over-the-counter medication can also cause serious impairment problems/and/or lifestyle health related problems.

There are a number of smartphone applica-tions available used to calculate the concen-tration of alcohol in you or your friends blood. Use the apps as only an estimate of your blood alcohol content.

Please drink responsibility, have fun, and al-ways have a designated driver. Let’s work to-gether to keep our summer safe and fun.

For additional information feel free to contact Dan Evans – Alcohol Prevention Specialist at 228-7752.

About Veteran’s nursing Homes

Helping you find nursing homes for the vet-erans in your life.

The service that veterans provide for us is immeasurable. In gratitude to their personal dedication and sacrifice, The United States Department of Veterans Affairs offers nurs-ing home care for veterans who meet cer-tain criteria. They do this by contracting with private nursing homes, sponsoring VA (Vet-erans Affairs) community living centers, and even running special state veteran’s nursing homes. This varies state-by state. Read on if one of these options might be available to you or your loved one.

Finding nursing Home Care for Veterans

All of the normal long-term selection and nursing home payment options are avail-able to veterans, including Medicare, Medic-aid and long-term care insurance. But unlike typical senior citizens, elderly veterans have access to additional long-term care options through their local VA office.

As with many VA services, you may have to go through a detailed eligibility process or join a waiting list to gain access, so if you choose to pursue one of the following vet-eran’s nursing home options, plan to apply as early as possible.

VA Community Living Centers

Community living centers are VA-run facili-ties that provide an array of short stay (less than 90 days) and long stay (91 days or more) services. They include but are not limited to skilled nursing, respite care, rehabilitation, hospice, and maintenance care for veterans awaiting placement in the community. They are usually located in or near VA hospitals or medical centers. Short stay services are available for veterans who are enrolled in VA health care and require CLC services. Long stay services are available for enrolled veter-ans who need nursing home care for life or for an extended period of time for a service-connect disability and those rated 60 per-cent service-connected and unemployable; or veterans who have a 70 percent or greater service-connected disability. All others are base on available resources.

Long –term Care services

In addition to nursing home care, VA offers a variety of other long-term care services di-rectly or by contract with community-based agencies. Such services include adult day health care, inpatient or outpatient respite care, inpatient or outpatient geriatric evalu-ation and management, hospice and pal-liative care, and home based primary care. Veterans receiving these services may be subject to a copayment.

Locate VA-Contracted nursing Homes near you

Nursing homes for veterans provide a service to men and women who gave themselves for our nation’s safety. If your loved one is a veteran, you’ll do well to look into veteran’s nursing home options for help subsidizing or even funding your loved one’s long term care. If you’re looking for a privately-owned nursing home that contact with the VA, just ask one of their expert elder care advisors for a complimentary, personalized list of affili-ated facilities near you.

state Veteran’s nursing Homes

State homes are owned and operated by the states. VA pays a portion of the per diem if the state meets VA standards. States estab-lish eligibility criteria and determine services offered for short and long-terms care. Spe-cialized services offered are dependent upon the capability of the home to provide them. Sometimes, up to 25 percent of beds in state veteran’s nursing homes are available to family members of vets.

Community nursing Home Program

VA maintains contracts with community nursing homes through every VA medical center. The program is designed to meet the needs of veterans who require long-term nursing home care in their own community, close to their families.

eligibility

The general admission criteria for nursing home placement requires that a resident must be medically stable, i.e. not acutely ill, have sufficient functional deficits to require inpatient nursing home care, and is assessed by an appropriate medical provider to be in need of institutional nursing home care. In addition, the veteran must meet the re-quired VA eligibility criteria for nursing home care or the contract nursing home program and the eligibility criteria for the specific state veterans’ home. For VA nursing home care, veterans may be subject to a copay-ment depending on their financial status. VA social workers can help explain eligibility and copayment requirements.
