May 2- July 29, Departures VII A juried student exhibition, Departures VII highlights photography by graduates of the Daytona State College photography programs. This is the seventh year that the Daytona State College Southeast Museum of Photography has had the honor of showcasing the work of these graduates and it will continue to be a yearly summer event at the museum. For more than 40 years, Daytona State College graduates have taken their place among the nation’s leading photographers. The programs have grown into the largest, most comprehensive commercial photography programs in the southeastern US. The challenges of a rapidly changing aesthetic and commercial environment have been met by dynamic programs that stress the fundamental aspects of photography, the highest level of technical proficiency and professional judgment; and give an understanding of the techniques, materials and equipment used in the profession today. This exhibition series is presented each year as part of the summer exhibition schedule of the Daytona State College Southeast Museum of Photography. For $11 (including tax), lunch patrons receive an appetizer, entrée, dessert and beverage. Vegetarian meals are available by request. Gratuities are welcome and help fund student scholarships. Credit cards are accepted at Café 101. The charge for dinner is $15. Café 101 is open to the public; however, seating is limited and reservations are required. SMP - DINNER & A MOVIE (WEDNESDAYS) Café 101 will be closed from May 16 through May 25 and from August 12 through September 5. It also will be closed each Friday between May 29 and August 10. June 7 & 8, 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. Matter of Life & Death 2012: Suicide Prevention Conference This two-day conference will cover general suicide prevention topics and strategies. The primary target audience is educators; however the focus is broad enough to include other groups. Last year’s conference attracted more than 200 participants representing 110 different colleges, schools, health-care and faith-based organizations. The main focus of this conference is on practical issues and applied strategies to help prevent suicides, especially among young people. It will also provide professional development for college/school counselors, campus safety officers, administrators, faculty members, students, mental health professionals and for faith-based organizations. Participants will learn about current and emerging suicide prevention strategies as well as practical applications of those strategies. Experts and campus leaders experienced in suicide prevention will lead the programs and trainings. There is no charge for attending the conference; there will be a small fee for those wishing to receive CEU credits. No previous experience is necessary as campers receive hands-on instruction and inspiration. “Picturing the Impossible” - mix and match a variety of unlikely items (oil and water, food coloring, fabric and bright swirls of paint) to examine what they look like under a close-up lens. Learn cool ways to create geometric "light trails" when painting with light and even try photographing your subject under the blacklight. You can even paint a background for your subject using special phosphorescent paint that glows.Take your photographs from ordinary to extraordinary! For ages 8-11. SMP's Photography Camps are structured as one-week sessions, each following a unique theme. Participants have the option of registering for one, two, or all three week-long sessions. No previous experience is necessary as campers receive hands-on instruction and inspiration. “Artful Abstractions” - this week is about the experimentation and exploration of light, shape and form to create dynamic, colorful works of art with the camera. Discover the artistic potential in a variety of household items. Photograph intriguing designs formed by wisps of smoke, the pearlescent colors of soap and chrystalized salts and even the "fractured" views resulting from your own custom-made kaleidoscope that will fit over your camera lens! No previous experience is necessary as campers receive hands-on instruction and inspiration. “Depicting the Masters: Time, Motion and Movement” - learn how to freeze a drop of water in midair or capture a balloon mid "pop" using special lighting techniques. Discover methods that photographers have used throughout history to stop motion and create exposures over long durations of time. Then, test out these techniques as you create your own images: use strobes to freeze your subject mid-jump or create levitation images that appear to defy gravity. For ages 12-15. No previous experience is necessary as campers receive hands-on instruction and inspiration.“History or Hoax: The “Stories" Behind the Images” - for ages, photographs have been used as evidence, but they don't necessarily always tell the truth. Seeing is no longer believing in our modern digital world. Explore the stories behind some of the most extraordinary photographs ever taken and discover some of the tricks used to make images that stretch the truth for many different purposes. Then put this knowledge to the test as you manipulate and construct your own images to fool your friends. For ages 12-15.
