You are handed a five-member family with a strong medical history ranging from illnesses like diabetes, high blood pressure, breast cancer, depression, celiac and gout. They need constant aenon and research; their ages range from 1 to 64 and they are considered the “sickest family in Orlando.” Your job is to heal them in one semester, and the realism is enough to make a medical student break into a sweat. This technology, called Virtual Paent, is a game that was developed in conjuncon with Dr. Juan Cendan at the UCF College of Medicine, which can be programmed with a variety of illnesses to which the student must learn to respond. SimLEARN, Robinson Making a Difference By Dolly Rairigh Glass It’s one of those common sayings, “The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree.” In the case of Harry Robinson, his father’s Navy service inspired his own, and now his son, Andrew, is headed into his second year in the Navy ROTC at the University of Florida. He has aspiraons of following in the footsteps of both his father and grandfather. One of Robinson’s fondest memories of his Navy career, he said, came at his own rerement, which coincided with the Change of Command that would relieve him as the Commanding Officer for the Naval Air Warfare Training Systems Division. Orange County, Simulaon Leaders Discuss Orlando’s Future Workforce By Terri Bernhardt Orange County Public Schools Career and Technical Educaon Department, in partnership with the Orange County Library Melrose Center, hosted a Simulaon Summit to bring together the simulaon community, and other local organizaons. The purpose was to consider, idenfy, and embrace more opportunies for Orange County youth through quality educaon and training. Lt. Gen. (ret) Tom Bapste, President, Naonal Center for Simulaon, delivered the keynote address and spoke about the origins of simulaon in Orlando and where it is today. Free xAPI Workshops at the ADL Orlando Co-Lab The Advanced Distributed Learning (ADL) Iniave is hosng two, free workshops about the Experience API (xAPI) next week, June 17-19 at their Co-Lab here in Orlando. Day One – Intro to the xAPI Workshop 2014 Tuesday, June 17, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. EDT Day one will be an introductory workshop about the xAPI targeted at those who want to find out how the xAPI can enhance distributed learning. Steve Nakagawa, gathered and celebrated the groundbreaking of the Lone Sailor Memorial of Central Florida, following the conclusion of the 5th Annual Central Florida Navy League Wounded Warrior/Lone Sailor 5K on April 5. The Central Florida Navy League (CFNL) is leading the campaign to help recognize and preserve the rich Navy history in Central Florida by developing the Lone Sailor Navy Memorial in Blue Jacket Park at the site of the former RTC “Grinder.” NAWCTSD’s Selina Vik Honored for Mentoring By Derrick Mahews, NAWCTSD Public Affairs Selina Vik started out her day on May 7 by aending a quarterly Town Hall meeng with command leadership recognizing workforce accomplishments and sharing insight on the future direcon of the organizaon. Then the announcement came. Vik who works at the Naval Air Warfare Center Training Systems Division (NAWCTSD) as Department Head, Training and Career Development was selected as the recipient of the command’s annual Ray Malano Coach of the Year award. The SSAT iniated the SSIG forum with the sole purpose of encouraging construcve exchanges related to the source selecon process. ARL-HRED STTC Hosts Under Secretary for S&T DHS Dr. Daniel Gerstein, Under Secretary for Science and Technology (S&T), Department of Homeland Security (DHS), recently visited the U.S. Army Research Laboratory, Human Research and Engineering Directorate’s Simulaon and Training Technology Center (ARL-HRED STTC). Gerstein was introduced to the unique relaonships within Team Orlando and the modeling and simulaon corridor that maximizes returns on minimal funds. ARL-HRED STTC engineers provided key program briefings and hands-on demonstraons in various technical areas such as medical, terrain generaon tools and the work conducted at the Instute for Creave Technologies in California.

The Heartbeat of Medical Simulation

The pressure is on. You are handed a five-member family with a strong medical history ranging from illnesses like diabetes, high blood pressure, breast cancer, depression, celiac and gout. They need constant attention and research; their ages range from 1 to 64 and they are considered the “sickest family in Orlando.” Your job is to heal them in one semester, and the realism is enough to make a medical student break into a sweat.

This technology, called Virtual Patient, is a game that was developed in conjunction with Dr. Juan Cendan at the UCF College of Medicine, which can be programmed with a variety of illnesses to which the student must learn to respond.

Orange County Public Schools Career and Technical Education Department, in partnership with the Orange County Library Melrose Center, hosted a Simulation Summit to bring together the simulation community, and other local organizations. The purpose was to consider, identify, and embrace more opportunities for Orange County youth through quality education and training.
