Brenham Floral Co. New Owners Are Committed to Maintaining Tradition of Quality and Service

Business Spotlight

Mary Grant Avina and Meg Grant purchased the Brenham Floral Compa-ny from longtime owners Debbie Wolt-mann and Destry Pohlmeyer just in time for Mother’s Day. Mothers themselves, the pair of sisters who live in Chappell Hill and Burton respectively, plan to car-ry on the quality design work and ded-icated commitment to their customers that Debbie and Destry brought to the business for so many years.

Owning a flower shop has been a lifetime

dream for Meg, whose first career was as a magazine journalist. Mary, formerly a re-altor, property manager and banker, brings her business acumen to the partnership, aptly titled Sisters’ Next Chapter.

Mary and Meg are excited to launch this second career, and expect Brenham Floral Company will continue to bloom under their new ownership.

Brenham Floral Company is located at 2630 Highway 36 South in Brenham. Phone: (979) 836-3566.

Leaders Learn about Economic Development

The final session for the Leadership Washington Coun-ty-Class of 2017 was held in May and focused on Econom-ic Development.

The day began at Emerson/PIC and included a presen-tation from Matthew Strickland with an overview of the local industrial business climate, followed by a tour of the impressive facility.

The class then headed to Independence Coffee to hear from Matthew Wehring from the Small Business Devel-opment Center at Blinn College, who gave an overview of the SBDC and talked about issues facing small business owners. Ragan and Christi Bond, owners of Independence Coffee, talked about how the SBDC helped their small business grow into what it is today. A tour of the roasting and packaging facility was then given by the Bonds.

Next, the class went to Pleasant Hill Winery to gain knowl-edge of this aspect of tourism in the local economy. A tour of the vineyard and cellar was given by Shae Janner (LWC Class of 2015). Owners Bob and Jeanne Cottle then gave the class an option to taste some of the wines made with Texas grapes.

The class then traveled to Blue Bell Creameries where they were served lunch and greeted by the company pres-ident, Ricky Dickson. He spoke to the class about leader-ship principals to apply within business and the community. Then a tour of the facility was provided to participants, fol-lowed by scoops of popular flavors in the Ice Cream Parlor.

The group next visited Bluebonnet Electric Cooperative and heard from Hondo Powell about economic develop-ment in the region, followed by a tour.

The Economic Development session ended with a trip to the A.W. Hodde Jr. Technical Education Center at Blinn College with a presentation by director David Yeager. He gave an overview of training programs offered at the Tech Center and took the class on a tour of the facility.

Matthew Strickland speaks to the class about Emerson.

Leadership Graduation Banquet HeldTo conclude the year and celebrate the class’

Geiger Press Tour continues to generate publicity

Valuable publicity for Brenham and Washington County results each year from articles that travel writers produce after visiting our area on press tours conducted by Geiger & Associates PR agency.

The Chamber-CVB last hosted a tour in November 2015. The most recent article resulting from that tour is a 10-page feature about Washington County in the April issue of Texas Highways. According to Geiger PR officials, the advertising equivalency for that amount of space in Texas Highways totals nearly $75,000. If you haven’t seen the article, call us at the Visitor Center and we can email you a PDF to read (979-836-3696).

Entitled “Washington County Ramble,” this 10-page article in the April issue of Texas Highways covers of a number of tourism ele-ments in both city and county.

“Leading Ladies” at Unity Theatre

In this hilarious comedy by the author of Lend Me A Tenor and Moon Over Buffalo, two English Shakespear-ean actors, Jack and Leo, find themselves down on their luck. When they hear that an old lady in York, Pennsyl-vania, is about to die and leave her fortune to her two long lost English nephews, they resolve to pass them-selves off as her beloved relatives and get the cash. But when they get to York, they find out that the relatives aren’t nephews, but nieces! Romantic entanglements abound, especially when Leo falls head-over-petticoat in love with the old lady’s vivacious niece, Meg, who’s engaged to the local minister. Meg knows that there’s a wide world out there, but it’s not until she meets “Maxine and Stephanie” that she finally gets a taste of it.

Performances run through June 18th. For more infor-mation call 830-8358 or visit www.UnityBrenham.org.
