one's faith, that faith that was given to each

human by that Creator who endowed us

with inalienable rights.�

Let us take a moment to remember all those people in the world who are not free

to seek life, liberty or happiness.�

Let us pray...�

O God,�

you willed that the Jewish people be free from slavery by their Egyptian �

captors.�

You will that all people should be free to worship you without fear�

and to celebrate their religious beliefs freely,�

even if they have not yet found you.�

Grant that those of us who live in this great nation�

will thank you daily for our freedom,�

and work for the freedom of others around the world�

that do not yet have the freedom to practice their faith openly and proudly.�

We seek your wisdom where hatred abounds,�

and ask for humility to offer our good works to others who live in fear and �

bondage.�

We ask all this through Christ our Lord,�

who frees us from sin and death through the wood of the cross. Amen.�

Many see these words as an indication of what may come in eternal life. In actuality, they have more to do with our lives here and now. We are called to die to ourselves and o3er our lives as gifts given generously to others. It is not about us. We are asked to serve God and not continue in our service of sin. Life is about learning to do what we really do not want to do because it brings us deeper into the mystery of God, ourselves, and others. Learning how to accept and live with the “small deaths” and sacrifices we encounter teaches us how to live with and approach our final death. We can do so with a heart that has been touched by and is open to mercy or one that is self- focused and closed. ©LPi

13th Sunday in Ordinary Time

“Whoever does not take up his cross and

follow after me is not worthy of me.”

Matthew 10:37-42

In the first reading we find that a woman befriends the

prophet Elisha and shows him great hospitality. She invites

him into her home and provides for his material needs. In

return God will bless her with a child.

In the gospel Jesus talks about whoever receives a

prophet because he is a prophet will receive a prophet’s

reward, and so on. In both readings, we find that the

operative mindset for receiving blessings from God is to be

open to His Word. The prophets speak God’s word to the

people. Opening up to what the prophet says is in effect

listening to God. God speaks to us in many varied ways, i.e.

Scripture, worship, prayer, meditation, other people and so

on. Hearing God speak to us means that we must open

ourselves to listening to God.

In the second reading St. Paul says that “we who were

baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death.... If

we, then, have died with Christ we believe that we shall also

live with him.”

We all face moments of doubt in our lives. We face

decisions that put into question whether or not we are doing

God’s will. God does not give us clear and certain signs. The

whole process of discerning God’s will is much like the

analogy of making sausage, you just don’t want to see how

messy it is. But if we become like Christ in accepting the

crosses of life, we will find redemption in God’s healing love.

People struggle with major decisions in their lives. Many

people wonder if they have chosen the right person to marry.

Others, whether or not they have found the right job or

profession. Others question God’s presence when they face

tremendous adversity. We just don’t know. But recall the

words of Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemene when He

begged God to spare Him of the Cross, “Not my will but your

will be done.”

Ascension of Our Lord Catholic Church

God Is Love

I was recently at a Catholic conference and had a

conversation with someone living in the thick of Hollywood

culture. He was Catholic and spoke of how hard it was to

live out his faith amid tremendous temptation and

negativity toward religion. He spoke about how going to

daily Mass helped to keep him centered and stay strong in

his faith. He was a great witness to living out one’s faith in

the face of disbelief.

One thing that he told me stood out above all the rest. He

spoke of his engagement to his fiancé and how important it

was to him that God was a major part of their relationship

and their lives as individuals as well. He told me he said

something to her like, “If you don’t love Jesus more than you

love me, this is never going to work.” What an amazing and

truly moving witness!

Songs and books are written about the intense longing one

human being can have for another. We can describe

another as meaning everything to us. We speak of wanting

to offer our complete selves to our beloved. However, true

love is about more than wanting to be with that person. It is

about wanting that person to know a love even greater than

theirs: the love of God. No

love can last without God. My

Hollywood friend knew this to

be the case. He showed his

true love for his wife-to-be by

sharing more than himself —

he shared the very One who

created love.
