Over the past two decades, Chantel has built a career centered around building a better community for all of us. As a lifelong Montanan, she is dedicated to ensuring that key stakeholders are working in collaboration to advance our treasured state. Her passion for community extends into her volunteer work, where she serves the Governor’s Commission on Community Service, Eagle Mount Bozeman, Women Leading Montana, Alpha Omicron Pi, and Montana Ambassadors. For Chantel, her husband, Dax, and their son, Dax Michael, adventure is a family value. The trio can often be found playing outside or exploring a long, quiet Montana road. AMY KELLOGG, Owner, Vassallo Foods, Inc. (Class of 2013) Amy is an owner of Vassallo Foods in Polson, MT, where they manufacture Country Pasta and Tipu’s Chai. Much of Amy’s attention is dedicated to brand management, including product development, line expansion and marketing initiatives, and organizational growth. Amy’s passions include leadership and relationship building. She is Past Chair of the Leadership Montana Governing Board, Past Chair of the Alumni Committee, chair of the Montana Agriculture Development Council, a Montana Ambassador, and a member of Frontier Angel Fund. Before moving to Montana in 2004, she worked in pharmaceutical marketing. Amy’s true passion during these years was organizing high-profile international and domestic meetings. She oversaw company- wide operations including strategic positioning and product development, team leadership, and organizational expansion. Earlier in her career, Amy was seen riding her yellow 3-speed Schwinn Collegiate at warp speed through Philadelphia’s streets as the city’s first female bicycle messenger. Amy loves spending time out on Flathead Lake, shredding the ski slopes, and sampling fine cocktails. Amy cherishes her role as a stepmother to three kids, wife to her husband, and minion to their nutty cat, HRH Noelle. 10:15–11:15 am NATIVE AMERICAN CULTURAL PRESENTATION Luliana Brown, Jingle Dance HEATHER SOBREPENA, Program Manager, Indian Country Economic Development Program (Class of 2018) Heather is a member of the MniCoujou band of the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe and a descendant of the Crow (Apsaalooke) Nation as well as a third-generation Filipino-American. Heather manages the Montana Department of Commerce Indian Country Programs and oversees a family of nine programs: Tribal Business Planning Grants, Indian Equity Fund, and Native American Business Advisor Program, State Tribal Economic Development (STED) Commission, Montana Indian Language Program, Native American Collateral Support Programs, STED Indian Equity Fund, STED Montana Indian Youth Small Business, and Tribal Tourism. 11:15 am–12:30 pm KEYNOTE SPEAKER: MAURY POVICH MAURY POVICH is an American media personality best known as the host of the popular daytime talk show Maury. Born in 1939 to famed sportswriter Shirley Povich, Maury Povich launched his own media career in the 1960s, becoming the host of Panorama and an anchor at news desks around the country. In 1986 he began hosting A Current Affair, a newsmagazine show that proved a surprising hit. Povich moved on to the daytime talk show genre in 1991 with The Maury Show, later was relaunched as Maury. 2:45–4:15 pm PANEL DISCUSSION #1: ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT MODERATOR: LIZ MARCHI, Founder & Fund Coordinator, Frontier Angel Fund, LLCLiz Marchi is the founder of Frontier Angel Fund II and Fund Coordinator for Frontier Angel Fund I, Montana’s first angel fund. She is the Advisory Board Chair of the Flathead Beacon, which recently acquired Flathead Living Magazine. She is a co-founder of Northfork Strategies and has a background in legislative and public policy issues related to business growth and development at the state and federal levels. She has served as President of the Montana Ambassadors, President of the Hollins University Alumnae Association, and Trustee of Hollins University. She served as President and CEO of Montana West Economic Development and the Flathead County Port Authority focusing on marketing, communications, and access to capital for economic and entrepreneurial development. She serves on the Board of North Valley Hospital, Advisory Board for the Montana Meth Project, Governor’s Economic Advisory Council, ACE Scholarship Advisory Board, Board of Code Montana, and as Vice Chairman of the Greater Polson Community Foundation. She has been recognized for her vision and courage in bringing the entrepreneurial imperative to the rural community. She resides with her husband Jon on a ranch outside of Polson, Montana, where she sells natural, Montana raised, Wagyu (Kobe) beef and registered Angus. She has three children, two step children, two grandchildren, and two Corgis.

COLLEEN UNTERREINER, Executive Director of Institutional Advancement and the Foundation for Flathead Valley Community College (Class of 2009)Colleen Unterreiner directs a volunteer Foundation Board and Associates and staff in raising private funds to support scholarships, programs and facility projects at Flathead Valley Community College. Her current priority is to raise $18 million through the FVCC ONE Campaign, a philanthropic effort to expand the FVCC campus to include a new Library and Learning Commons and a new College Center. Colleen has a Doctorate in Educational Leadership from the University of Montana and a Master’s Degree in Public Administration from Arizona State University. She is a proud native of Belt, Montana.

KATHARINE KING, Assistant Director, Community & Economic Development, City of KalispellKatharine focuses on downtown revitalization, historic preservation, workforce housing, tourism, grant writing and administration, and more. Katharine has successfully helped develop and implement multiple EPA Brownfields grants. Prior to employment at the City, Katharine served as Executive Director of two Flathead Valley non-profits. In 2014, Katharine earned recognition as a Certified Economic Developer through the International Economic Development Council (IEDC). A former founding member of the Northwest Montana Community Land Trust Board of Directors, Katharine currently serves on the Conrad Mansion Museum Board of Directors.

KIM MORISAKI, Director of Marketing & Business Development, Montana West Economic DevelopmentCombining eleven years of exceptional management and entrepreneurship experience, Kim oversees Business Development and Special Projects for Montana West Economic Development and Flathead County Economic Development Authority, assisting new and expanding businesses in their pursuit of financial resources and business expertise. Kim provides counseling and technical assistance for MWED clients as they work through their business plan needs. Additionally she acts as Project Manager for the development of the Glacier Rail Park, owned by Flathead County Economic Development Authority. In her spare time, Kim stays actively involved in the local Japanese community and Montana’s Kumamoto Club. Occasionally, she and her husband work as agents for a Japanese export company located in LA and specialize in finding American products that will suit Japanese tastes.

TAGEN VINE, President, Kalispell Regional Healthcare FoundationTagen joined Kalispell Regional Healthcare Foundation in 2006. He graduated from University of Wisconsin with a Bachelor of Science in Natural Resources and received a Masters in Business Administration with healthcare emphasis from Colorado Tech University. Before joining KRH, he served as a Campaign Officer at the Billings Clinic Foundation. Tagen worked for Boy Scouts of America in the suburbs of Chicago and in Western Montana for 10 years. He is the Past President of Montana Health Care Communications and Development Association, Past President of Montana Ambassadors, and Past President of Rotary Club of Kalispell. He sits on the boards of the Kalispell Chamber of Commerce, Montana Ambassadors, Eagle Transit, and Rotary Club of Kalispell. He is married with three girls ages 8, 10, 13 and enjoys skiing, golfing, fishing, and other outdoor pursuits.

In this capacity, he also serves at the executive director for the Kalispell Chamber Foundation and for the Kalispell Tourism Business Improvement District. In addition to his work at the Kalispell Chamber, Mr. Unterreiner serves on the US Chamber of Commerce’s Committee of 100 and the Association of Chamber of Commerce Executive’s Certified Chamber Executive Commission. Joe holds a Masters and Bachelor of Science degrees in public administration from the University of Southern California. He worked with Jim Scott to help create the Leadership Montana program and has since learned that this organizing committee is considered the “0” class. Joe and his wife, Colleen, have three grown children.

GREG CARTER, CEO, Mustard Seed Sauce and Dressing Co.Greg Carter is the CEO of New Business Development for Mustard Seed Sauce and Dressing Co, a startup. Greg has extensive experience in the food and beverage industry. He is experienced in advertising, marketing, public relations, and event planning. He is a past board member of the Bitterroot Valley Chamber of Commerce and is a Chair of Leadership Bitterroot.

LARRY HALL, Retired General Manager, S&K Electronics, Inc. Larry Hall has had a long career in business/community development and business management. Starting in 1973 as a Tribal EDA Planner on through to 1986 in various business and community development director positions. He then became self-employed in consulting and tourism industry. He went on to take the helm at S&K Electronics in 1993 as General Manager. He recently retired and was appointed to the Board of Directors.

TOM LUND, President & COO, Defiance Machine (Class of 2014)With a long career in banking—he was the founding president of Rocky Mountain National Bank in Kalispell—Tom took a hugely different fork in the road this year. Bringing his trademark enthusiasm and energy, Tom Lund joined Defiance Machine, a well-respected custom manufacturer in the elite markets of the firearms industry. Defiance has been growing steadily, admirably by most standards. But Tom has his eye on greater heights. Partnering with founder and CEO Glen Harrison, Tom is leading this company up a very steep growth curve. He has both the vision and the confidence to see a remarkable future. 10:15–11:45 am PANEL DISCUSSION #3: RECREATION ECONOMYMODERATOR: DAX SCHIEFFER, Director, Voices of Montana Tourism (Class of 2009)Dax Schieffer is the Director of Voices of Montana Tourism, whose mission is to educate all Montanans on the immense value of tourism. Schieffer has worked the past 18 years in the tourism industry, most recently as Director of Human Resources for Big Sky Resort. Prior to that he served as Director of Public Relations and Partner Resort Marketing, working across the company’s nine other ski resorts and serving as spokesperson for Big Sky Resort. Schieffer grew up in Sidney, Montana, and graduated from Montana State University in 1997. Dax has served on several community boards and committees including 10 years as a Volunteer Firefighter and EMT for Big Sky Fire Department. He currently serves as chairperson for the MSU Exponent Publications Board and volunteers as Chair on the Board of the Friends of Montana PBS. He is married to Chantel McCormick Schieffer with a five-year old son, Dax Michael.

TOM BANSAK, Assistant Director, Flathead Lake Biological StationTom Bansak is a freshwater ecologist at the Flathead Lake Biological Station who currently serves as its Assistant Director. Starting at FLBS in 1996 as a graduate student studying river ecology on the Middle Fork Flathead, Tom has since conducted water quality investigations around NW Montana, led research activities on large, pristine salmon rivers in Northern British Columbia and Southeast Alaska, constructed environmental sensor networks on Flathead Lake and the Middle Fork Flathead River, and been active in the battle against Aquatic Invasive Species. At the Bio Station, Tom is also an educator. He gives presentations to any and every type of audience (i.e., K-12 school groups; university students; professional, community and service groups; and anyone who will listen). Tom also oversees the Bio Station’s development activities. Tom and his family live at the base of the Swan Mountains near Bigfork, spending a lot of time hiking, paddling rivers, skiing and shoveling snow.

ROB RATKOWSKI, Director, Glacier Park International AirportRob Ratkowski is the Airport Director at Glacier Park International Airport. From childhood memories of riding on the United Airlines employee shuttle with his father at LAX to his current role as Airport Director, airports and air travel have always been a part of his life. With 20 years of progressively responsible experience in the airport management industry, and a lifetime in aviation, Rob understands the important impact that airports and air travel have on a tourism economy. In addition to a rich background in airport management, Rob is a certified member of the American Association of Airport Executives and the current past President of the Montana Airport Management Association. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Aviation Management from the Metropolitan State College of Denver. Outside of work, Rob serves as a board member for the Kalispell Chamber of Commerce, volunteers with his church, and enjoys flying recreationally as a private pilot. He and his family spend their free time enjoying many of the outdoor activities that Montana and the Flathead Valley have to offer.

RACENE FRIEDE, Executive Director, Glacier Country TourismHeralding from the small Montana cattle town of Ovando, Racene Friede grew up on the southern end of the Crown of the Continent—an upbringing that helped establish her inherent love for Big Sky Country. Armed with a Bachelor’s Degree in Communication from Montana State University, Racene has spent the majority of her professional career promoting travel and tourism to Montana. Since 2007, Racene has put her more than 26 years of marketing experience to work as the Executive Director for Glacier Country Tourism and has been a key player in helping to make tourism one of the top two industries in the state. In addition to leading one of Montana’s largest DMOs (destination marketing organization), Racene is also actively involved with Tourism Matters to Montana, Voices of Montana Tourism and the Blackfoot Challenge.

DIANE MEDLER, Director, Kalispell Convention & Visitor BureauDiane Medler has always been aware of the significance of destination marketing having grown up in the hospitality industry. The importance of uniqueness of place and promoting its special attributes was drilled in at an early age. After having lived in several different states, the mountains - and particularly Montana felt like home, so Diane and her family settled here in 1995. As the director of the Kalispell Convention & Visitor Bureau, a position she has held since 2010, Diane enjoys promoting Kalispell and the Flathead Valley and supporting our local businesses through increased year-round visitations.
