Canada’s Tournament Capital

Fall AQUATICS REGISTRATION - AUGUST 18 AT 7:30 AM GENERAL REGISTRATION - AUGUST 19 AT 7:30 AM

ONLINE REGISTRATION BEGINS AT 6:30 AM

For more information on the Sustainable Kamloops Plan visit www.kamloops.ca/sustainable.

Sustainability is alive and well in our parks and recreation facilities and is constantly evolving to support the goals set out in the Sustainable Kamloops Plan. Some of these initiatives are highly-visible while others may be happening quietly in the background.

At the Tournament Capital...

Tournament Capital Centre Zero Waste ProgramThe new Zero Waste diversion stations at TCC provide patrons with the opportunity to make the green choice and divert their waste for recycling or composting rather than burying it in a landfill.

Jora composters are hard at work at the TCC composting more than 2600 kg of facility organic compostable waste annually, all while producing a soil enhancer that is used on TCC gardens lowering the need for fertilizers.

Creating Healthy EnvironmentsDid you know that under the Hillside Stadium field is a geothermal system that helps heat and cool the TCC, avoiding the release of over 970 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions each year?

Did you know that the new reusable wipe down cloths at all of the TCC’s fitness gyms prevent 5,700 kg of waste from entering the landfill every year while saving the City $8,700 in annual operational costs?

Did you know that the ISC ice resurfacer produces zero emissions as it is 100% powered by electricity?

It Takes a Community to Achieve Sustainability Many of these sustainability initiatives are also planned for the City’s other Parks and Recreation facilities. What is even more important is that all of these sustainability initiatives can be employed at home as well.

Composting, growing your own food, installing energy efficient lighting, carpooling, recycling, using chemical free cleaners, and air drying laundry are just a few of the simple things you and your family can do at home to contribute to the community’s overall sustainability, and your family’s own health and wellness.

Promoting Active & Clean TransportationWhy not walk, ride or cycle to one of our City Parks or Recreation facilities, or take advantage of the many nearby bus stops?

The TCC’s Fast Charging station provides certainty and clean energy to electric vehicle owners allowing them to drive our city streets emission free.

We really do appreciate those drivers who refrain from idling their vehicles at City facilities and who are helping to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and improving the quality of the air we breathe.

Sustainable Recreation

This guide is published by

Recreation provides multiple pathways to well-being for individuals and communities in both indoor and outdoor environments, and is an integral part of community sustainability. Kamloops is fortunate to have a diverse range of recreational facilities, organized sport and leisure programs available throughout the community - many of which are featured in this guide. Kamloops’ abundance of parks and trail networks offer opportunities to participate in passive recreational activities such as walking, hiking, and cycling. Together, these recreational opportunities enable Kamloops residents to enjoy a high quality of life.

Community recreation also benefits from a sustainable system of support that includes people and organizations, facilities and natural areas. Balancing the needs of natural ecosystems with those of recreational users, and providing sustainable facilities and services that have no greater ecological footprint than is necessary, helps to ensure long-term access to the benefits of active living and social well-being.

Throughout this Activity Guide we highlight City initiatives that support sustainable recreation and share some tips to get you and your family thinking about how you can promote sustainability while you are at work, home or play.

Some Conversation dos and don’ts:• Do not ask questions that have a “yes” or “no” answer.• Pick a topic/theme – holidays, sports, music, movies etc.• Talk about upcoming weekend activities. • Keep the conversation light and fun. • Talk about what you might make for dinner tomorrow night.

FamilAlthough we sometimes complain about setting the table, helping prepare dinner and washing the dishes, the evening ritual of sitting down together each night over food brings families together. By spending this time with one another you have the ability to talk to each other and hear about everyone’s day. Having meals together allows an opportunity for the family to talk openly to each other comfortably.

Did you Know?Research shows that families who eat regularly

together enjoy higher levels of healthy nutritional

behaviors, family unity, academic

performance, motivation, self-esteem,

and decreased risk of depression

and substance abuse.

y

Family Balance Work and P layDoes your family suffer from “chronic lack of time” syndrome? The constant exposure to stress and strains of juggling a busy life can lead to long term, irreversible, negative effects on the human cardiovascular and immune systems.

Take control! – There are ways to help bring yourself into balance!

The Canadian Mental Health Association has some suggestions to help you to achieve a balanced life!

1) Create a buffer between work and home. After work, take a brief walk, do a crossword puzzle, or listen to some music before starting the evening routine

2) Determine which household chores are critical and which can be done by somebody else. Let the rest go.

3) Exercise. Even if it’s only for 15 minutes at a time, you’ll feel more energized and refreshed.

4) Create and implement a household budget. Start by setting aside some money from each pay cheque for the future.

ChildrenFinding balance for your child Our community there are some many great opportunities for your children to be active in; local community events, after-school lessons, to joining a club organization. Organized activities can help your children to gain skills and self-confidence, make friends and learn new things, too much structured activity can take the enjoyment out of the activity and may contribute to anxiety and pressure for your children and yourself.

Ask yourself these questions to help determine whether your child is overscheduled:• Do your children enjoy their extracurricular activities? Do you enjoy them?• What does the activity accomplish?• Is it being done out of habit?• Do you feel like your children need to be in activities because everyone else is, too?• Do your children spend so much time in activities that you don’t know what else is going on in

their lives?

Remember set aside dedicate time for the family to be together. Taking a few minutes to relax after getting home from a busy day help family members to reconnect.

Finding Balance – Preventing Falls In The Fall This fall, lets take a few moments to reduce the risk of falls in the home. There are a few easy things that you can do to make your home a little bit safer. Most household hazards can be minimized or eliminated with very little effort! Here are just a few ideas to get you started:

Lights – Use night lights and motion detectors inside and outside. Keep a light beside your bed with an easy to reach switch.

Tripping Hazards – Keep your house free of clutter. Remove unused items from frequently travelled hallways and paths. Tape down lose edges of rugs.

Bathroom – use non-slip mats inside and outside bathtubs and showers. Make sure that toilet paper is easy to reach from the toilet.

Outside – watch for uneven surfaces especially as the days get shorter and the light is lower.

Increase Strength – find an exercise class in the community that is geared towards increasing balance and strength. Many great options can be found in the 55+ section of this guide! (Also, look for our Keep On Moving logo to help identify safer exercise options).

Guiding Hands

CHOIRJUNIOR Music CoursePiano Instruction

Each child joins their caregiver in a creative, social environment of musical interaction, rhythm instruments, singing, movement and playing to develop preschool skills, language and musical awareness.

This program motivates children in a group setting to learn the three essential elements of pitch, harmony and rhythm in a dynamic, creative and social atmosphere. Each class works on the musical concepts of rhythm, pitch sense and vocal control, musicality, creativity, com-position, ensemble playing, fi nger and hand control, harmony, note recognition and reading. As children progress they move into private lessons addressing their individual needs.

This fun and creative class works on good vocal technique for the young singer. Students will use exercises and warm-ups, harmony singing, canon and partner songs to build confi dence in their own vocal instrument.

Students and caregivers learn music fundamentals in an interactive and positive way. Using keyboards, rhythm instruments, movement, singing and creative play, students learn the basics of rhythm, pitch and voice control, self and emotional awareness and of course, keyboard basics.

Helen Thompson is a certifi ed Yamaha Music Teacher with over 25 years voice and piano teaching experience. She has a reputation for cultivating a positive and energetic atmosphere for musical learning. Helen’s enthusiastic and creative approach helps students achieve to the best of their abilities and fosters a life-long enjoyment of musical

interaction.
