Be kind to our communityPlease recycle this guide!

STay aCTIve yeaR RoundWe often think of September as the transition into fall, however here in Kamloops the weather is often warm well into October! This time of year always signals change as children return to school and university starts up again for the semester. Even though the weather outside is shifting this doesn’t mean we should start to hibernate inside! Staying active year round is crucial to a healthy lifestyle, so take a look through this guide to find something that will keep you moving!

The fall is also a time to harvest, gardens will be bursting at the seams and the farmer’s market will be buzzing with activity. This is a time to think about giving thanks and helping your community. There are numerous ways to give back here in Kamloops so think about how you might help out your neighbourhood. Look into being a part of your local community association, or think about helping with community committees. Information on these topics can be found in the next few pages of this guide.

Dianne ClearwaterDianne, a Zoomer who retired in 2011, was looking for a fitness class that wouldn’t be too intimidating and she found the Gentle Circuit class. In no time she was welcomed into a group who had been coming to the class since 2009. This eclectic and diverse group has formed a wonderful bond of friendship and they enjoy getting together for coffee after their class, almost as much as taking part in the class! All are very supportive of one another and love to share travel stories and get out in the community to do various activities when not in class. The Gentle Circuit class is led by talented instructors who keep things fresh and invigorating. There is a strong belief that friendship is a gift that fills our lives with beauty, joy and grace and it makes the world we live in a better, happier and healthier place.

Dianne has found the Tournament Capital Center to be such a positive place that she felt the need to contribute. She is now proud to be one of 12 Tournament Capital Ambassadors that volunteer throughout the community. Today she will tell you - “ I fell into the best place possible for me, I had no idea I could have found such a positive place that would be so good for both my body and soul. I have found the best group of friends imaginable and a place to go each day that just makes me feel good!”

Won’t you come on out and join us?

Community associationsThe City of Kamloops understands the importance of people working together to support their community. Knowing our neighbors makes for strong and connected neighborhoods.

Community associations are volunteer organizations created and run by people just like you – neighbors who love their neighborhood and want to make it all it can be.

How do community associations support neighborhoods?

• Keep people informed of what is happening in their neighborhood

• Host community celebrations and organize projects that make neighborhoods beautiful

• Encourage healthy, safe communities

• Build connections between neighbors.

Together we make our communities strong by bringing people together with a vision for vibrant community living.

AquaticsLaP SWIMMInG eTIQueTTe 101Lap swimming is enjoyed by many of our patrons with a variety of needs and fitness levels. Working together respectfully will ensure everyone enjoys a peaceful lap swim experience.

GeT youR GeaR & CHooSe a Lane• When you arrive take a moment to look at the pool set up

and start thinking about where you are going to swim today.• If lanes are pre-assigned to fast, moderate and slow, figure

out where you best fit. What is your pace relative to the swimmers using the lanes?

• Be kind and get your own swim gear (kick board, pull-buoy).

Lane SeT uP• Circle swimming is done in a counter-clockwise direction

typically in a single lane (like driving – swim on the right).• Casual lane is available for non-structured swimming such

as water jogging; it is not set up for lap swimming (e.g. circle swimming).

GeTTInG In THe Lane• Sit down and hang your legs in the water, off to one side of

the lane. Before you get in let the swimmer(s) in the lane complete a few more laps to let them know you are there.

SWIMMInG• Allow at least 5 seconds between you and the person in

front of you. Typically when the lead swimmer is at the backstroke flags, you can push off.

• Faster swimmers should lead the lane. • If you reach the wall and need a break, get out of the way

of incoming swimmers! Let all the swimmers pass you before you start up again.

• Use caution when passing a swimmer on the left. If possible communicate to swimmer ahead of you so they can stop at next wall to be passed.

• If you feel a swimmer behind you is closing in on you, stop at the wall to be passed. Consider swimming in another lane.

• If you encounter a problem with a fellow swimmer, please notify a lifeguard.

Did You Know? The simple act of having a cleansing shower before you enter the pool has a significant

impact on the quality and comfort of the pool water enjoyed by all.

“Each day of our lives we make deposits in the memory banks of our children.” – Charles R. Swindoll

Did You Know?Children do not need costly or fancy toys to grow, learn and develop. What they need most is someone they can rely

on, talk to and notice what they do and comfort them when they feel upset. They need playful chances to learn about and

explore the world.

ReLaTIonSHIP BuILdInGBuilding a strong, lasting relationship with your children begins when they are young. Kids value any amount of time a parent can spend with them. It doesn’t matter what you do exactly, just that you do it together and that you pay attention to them during the activity.

Children who grow up in a supportive environment, who have a good relationship with their parents are far more likely to be successful in life.

Having a good relationship with your children helps their self esteem and their social skills. They grow up to be strong and confident as a result of good parenting.

Early Years

Did You Know?

Did You Know?Social development in children is an essential part of childhood. Simple

social activities can help strengthen a child’s social abilities and build self confidence. For example, pretend play teaches children about the world

around them, while storytelling and art projects encourage children to use their imagination. Physical activities foster the

development of gross and fine motor skills.

environment, who have a good relationship with their parents are far more likely to be successful in life.

• Having a good relationship with your children helps their self esteem and their social skills.

• A child whose parents show they care by spending time with him and by taking an interest in his life knows that they matter. They grow up to be strong and confident.

• When we empower our children, they develop the skills they need to have power over their own lives.

• In the short term empowerment plants the seeds for developing an “I can do it” attitude. In the long term, empowerment helps children become capable and develop high self esteem in their teen and adult lives.

• Teaching life skills empowers your kids and helps them develop that priceless internal dialogue “Yes, I can!”

“How can we expect our children to know and experience the joy of giving unless we teach them that the greater pleasure in life lies in the art of giving rather than receiving.”– James Cash Penney

10 ways to teach your child to giveGiving back to your community (volunteerism) can teach young children important life-lessons, such as gratitude, compassion, respect, and can instill in them a commitment to their community and the world around them. Ten things that you can do to teach your child about giving:

1. Give by example. Kids learn what they see.

2. Making giving back a tradition in your home.

3. Ask your child to bring neighbour’s garbage cans from road up to the house after garbage pick up.

4. See garbage, pick it up.

5. “Please” and “thank you” – early basics.

6. Make a card or bake cookies for a sick relative or family friend/neighbor (or just because it would make someone happy).

7. Read newspaper headlines to your child - “happy” and “giving” stories. Helps child see the world outside of themselves as well.

8. Point out good deeds of others; and commend your child when you see them do something really special for someone else.

9. Take your child with you when you volunteer.

10. Share stories from your own youth with a child. They love stories and it is a great way to share, communicate and be with one another.

FaMILy MeaLSAlthough we all sometimes complain about setting the table, helping prepare dinner, washing the dishes, the evening ritual of sitting down together each night over food brings families together. By spending this time with one another you have the ability to talk to each other and hear about everyone’s day. Having meals together allows an opportunity for the family to talk openly to each other comfortably in a non-threatening way.

and substance abuse.

At dinner time, insist everyone “power-down” their devices and engage in a family discussion. It’s an opportune time to recollect as a family unit and share each person’s experiences of the day. Tech devices are distracting and families are busy, so sit down and enjoy a meal together!

Social Media Safety Tips for Kids– American Academy of Pediatrics

Social networking certainly has its advantages. It strengthens connections with friends and family and encourages participation in community service, collaboration on school projects, and communication with coaches and teammates.

Here, some ways to help your child use social media appropriately:

Immerse yourself. Know how to create a profile, “friend” your child, and be a part of her/his online life.

Be a role model. If you’re constantly on the cell or computer, your tween will want to be, too.

Power down. Insist that meals be device-free and set a reasonable bedtime.

Chat it up. Don’t rely solely on a “net nanny” software program to keep your kid from questionable sites. Talk about your and his/her social-media experiences.

Go public. Keep the computer centrally located in the family room or kitchen.

Be kind. Discourage meanness, gossiping, and posting anything that’s untrue or potentially harmful.

Take action. For more info, go to CyBeRSaFeBooK.CoM

AdultKaMLooPS andSeCond SuMMeRKamloops residents love the sunshine and spend summer months enjoying their favorite outdoor activities. Sadly, once summer is over most of us prepare for winter months spent indoors and idle.

In the Parks, Recreation & Cultural Services Department, we see things a little differently.

Second Summer is the name we’ve given to the months of September and October. For most places these are the months when people are driven indoors by cool, blustery fall weather.

KaMLooPS IS SPeCIaLSeptember and October in Kamloops sees a gentle change of seasons and lovely temperatures PERFECT for being outside and energetic. Tots Soccer for the little ones, hiking and biking for adults – there are so many choices to stay active and healthy.

Gone are the scorching days of July and August that drove us to shade and water, and made outdoor exercise challenging.

Together let’s celebrate summer’s passing and take advantage of Second Summer by getting out to enjoy the activities we love.

aQuaFITneSSAquafit is exercising through movement in water. Water generates natural ‘resistance’ which facilitates a full-body workout at your own pace and intensity. Buoyancy promotes ‘low im-pact’ movement by decreasing the shock transmitted through your bones and joints.

aqualite: For beginner to experienced exercisers looking for low intensity, low impact class in shallow water.

Aquafit: For all levels of exercisers looking for a low impact, high intensity class in shallow water. These classes feature full body strength, flexibility and cardio training.

Deep Water Aquafit: For intermediate to experienced exercisers looking for a no impact, high intensity class in deep water. These classes feature full body strength, flexibility and cardio training and require flotation belts which are provided.

SaFe To PaRTICIPaTe- PaR-Q and youBeing more active is very safe for most people; however, some people should check with their doctor before they start becoming much more physically active. All Aquafit participants must review the Physical Activity Readiness Questionnaire (PAR-Q) prior to par-ticipation. If you are between the ages of 15 and 69, the PAR-Q will tell you if you should check with your doctor before you start. If you are over 69 years of age and you are not used to being very ac-tive, check with your doctor before participating. For more details, please talk to the instructor or visit kamloops.ca/swim.

We will examine what these factors represent, how they arise, how to effectively deal with them, and learn how to ensure they do not become factors in the first place. You will learn mind control methods, how to set goals to eliminate some potential problems, and how to create a plan of action if symptoms begin to creep in.

TCC Meeting Room» Nov 21 6:30-8:30 PM Thu 216335

Pillar 4: accelerate $20 My Performance Levels!Learn to put yourself on the fast track to success. On the mental side of performance, we look at how to increase focus and how to increase effort in order to bring higher levels of improvement and consistency. You will learn to set short term goals, look at necessary performance indicators, and put an individual process plan together to build and maintain momentum toward achieving big improvements over short periods of time.

Each child joins their caregiver in a creative, social environment of musical interaction, rhythm instruments, singing, movement and playing to develop preschool skills, language and musical awareness.

This program motivates children in a group setting to learn the three essential elements of pitch, harmony and rhythm in a dynamic, creative and social atmosphere. Each class works on the musical concepts of rhythm, pitch sense and vocal control, musicality, creativ-ity, composition, ensemble playing, fi nger and hand control, harmony, note recognition and reading. As children progress they move into private lessons addressing their individual needs.

In this fun and creative class, students will use exercises and warm-ups, harmony singing, canon and partner songs to build confi dence in their own vocal instrument. All the time working on good vo-cal technique for a young singer.

Students and caregivers learn music fundamentals in an interactive and positive way. Using keyboards, rhythm instruments, movement, singing and creative play, students learn the basics of rhythm, pitch and voice control, self and emotional awareness and of course, keyboard basics.
