The President ’s Message

Good News/Bad News The Good News is: The Charlotte area did not blow away the night of our October meeting. The Bad News is: Because weather forecasters thought Charlotte would blow away that night, we cancelled our meeting and guest speaker.

Thanks to those of you who made phone calls, contacted schools and sent e-mails to alert members of our meeting cancellation. When the tornado alert was extended into late evening and I decided it would be a bad night to be out, the Phone Tree members and others zipped into action.

Regretfully, this meant the loss of our guest speaker, Ms. Lisa Koons, Founder and Director of Charlotte 24-7, who was to speak on human trafficking. We thank her for preparing for us and hope to be able to reschedule her presentation.

Also, our Social Committee had already begun their set-up and missed the messages of our meeting change. To these ladies I sincerely apologize. We will seek additional means of contacting them during the school day in the future.

Our Kappa Mission As members of Delta Kappa Gamma we pledged to be leaders in education. The newly formed DKG Educational Foundation will take the lead to support professional development, grants, scholarships and other charitable activities for women educators and the development of educational excellence.

Our pledges will give the Foundation a means of projecting the amount of money available to be awarded. Alpha Nu Chapter collected $450 in pledges from 27 members at their September meeting. Our challenge is for Kappa to be generous in our pledges and for all those financially able to participate when pledge forms are passed at our November meeting. Please take note of the Foundation’s article in this newsletter and follow your leadership calling to pledge a donation.

Every Woman’s Dream: Shopping to Serve Our Community Our December 13th meeting will be here before we know it!

While out and about, take advantage of sales on school supplies, grooming and hygiene items, as well as small toys in our December shoebox project for local children in need via Keeping Hope Alive. Keep in mind, we are shopping for girls & boys ages 4-‐9 & age 10+

Keep in mind that items must fit into a shoebox! Suggestions: knit hats, scarves, gloves; combs, toothbrushes and travel case, floss, soap; barrettes, hairbands; pencils, pens, markers, rulers, small calculators; small toys: yo-yos, bubbles, activity pads, Matchbox cars, card games; wrapped candy, snacks. Special items that may become a child’s keepsake are also welcomed. If shopping is not your pleasure, but you’d like to contribute, call Jeannette Carofano 704-814-7197 or email [email protected] with your budget and she will shop for you. Teacher Salary Raise Highlights Report from the Education Law

and Policy Committee By Dr. Elaine Jenkins, Chair

With the passage of S744, the General Assembly approved an overall increase of $58,874,986 over the previous year’s budget which constitutes a 0.73% increase. Selected highlights from the budget are:

$282.3 million dollar for teacher raises, averaging a 7% raise. However, part of the funding for the increase comes from folding in longevity pay to salaries and a cessation of longevity pay for teachers in the future. Thus the teacher raises average from 5.5% to 5.7%.

The 37-step salary schedule is replaced with a 6-step schedule. Salary information may be seen at http://www.ncpublicschools.org

Non-certified school employees (teacher assistants, bus drivers, clerical support) and central office personnel receive a $500 pay increase plus a $118 increase in benefits.

Most state employees will receive a $1,000 pay raise and $236 increase in benefits and 5 bonus vacation days.

No public school employees will receive the 5 bonus vacation days.

State and school retirees will receive a 1% cost-of-living adjustment.

Educational Foundation Launches The 100 Challenge

During the Fall Executive Board Meeting at Elon on September 6, Dr. Judith Carlson, chairman of the Board of Directors of the North Carolina Delta Kappa Gamma Educational Foundation, announced the Foundation’s “The 100 Challenge—Launching a Dream” initiative.

The Foundation is in the process of applying for 501 C (3) status. When approved, the Foundation Board will support the professional and personal growth of women educators and excellence in education. Delta Kappa Gamma members will have the opportunity for enhanced leadership development, support beginning teachers, establish scholarships, and grant funding. The Foundation is organized exclusively for charitable, educational purposes.

Each region is challenged to get 100 pledges of $10 each before March 15, 2015. These pledges can come from individuals or chapters. Chapter presidents will collect pledge cards and send them to Regional Directors. No money will be collected at this time; the Board will follow up to collect the pledge when they have IRS approval.

The Foundation is awaiting IRS approval of tax-exempt status and the subsequent ratification of the Foundation Enabling Act by the Eta State membership. Pledges now give the Foundation a way to project the amount of money that may be donated when contributions start and the Board can begin to plan for grants from the Foundation.
