Watchmaker is not always a person who can fix broken chronometric instruments. In rare cases the word «mastership» has different meaning that equates it to high art. Watchmakers are those who create new, unknown movements. They are artists taking their paints from the inexhaustible palette of Time.

For several years I have been creating watches that can through the invention of my device calculate days and months of the Muslim lunar calendar. It was not easy to come up with such a movement. To do this I needed to learn the holy book Koran, explanations of the Wise Men of Zion, ancient astronomical calculations of the Moon motion. I spent many hours in conversations with muftis of different

Muslim countries and regions. And sometimes my interlocutors sincerely doubted if it was possible to translate such complex calculations into gears. But the time came, and I realized, and I was able to create my first module of the mechanical Hegira lunar calendar. My patent for the Muslim calendar device remains in force since 2006.

I extremely respect and admire culture and beliefs of Muslim peoples. And I hope that my watch will be faithful help in difficult issues of religious chronology as well as worthy decoration of the true Muslims’ homes.

ABouT THe MAesTro

Konstantin Chaykin, inventor and watchmaker, lives and works in St. Petersburg. Since 2003 he has devoted his talent to design and creation of elite timepieces providing them with special features which he invented himself. For the time being, Konstantin Chaykin is the only russian watchmaker who gained recognition of peers all over he world. He is a member of the international Academie Horlogere des createurs Independants (AHCI) and enjoys cooperation with collectors, jewelers and watchmakers from different countries – Switzerland, Germany, France, spain, countries of the Far and Middle east and many others.

Konstantin Chaykin founded his own workshop which deals with design and creation of complex technical timepieces and movements. This workshop is one of its kind. It makes the best mechanic watches in russia. The workshop thrives on vast, encyclopedic knowledge of its founder, his experience, skills and resourcefulness.

Hegira (in Arabic – eviction, emigration) – this is the name of the Muslim era established by the second caliph of the Arab Caliphate Omar I in 638 AD to honor the Prophet Muhammad’s migration from Mecca to Yathrib (Medina). This event is considered to be the turning point in the history of Islam and 17 years after the great migrations caliph omar I used it as a foundation for the Muslim calendar. The first day of the new calendar he chose was Friday, dated July 16, 622 - the very day when the Prophet Muhammad left Mecca. This calendar is lunar, i.e. time periods are calculated according to the moon changing phases; this calculation does not depend on the movement of the sun. Lunar Hegira calendar is used by all Muslims to calculate the

dates of Islamic religious holidays. In some countries, namely Algeria, Iraq, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia and others, Lunar Hegira is adopted as the official national calendar. However, since the astronomical lunar month begins in different countries at different time, the lunar months in these countries do not coincide.

The amber case of this clock encompasses oriental architectural traditions and the movement is designed by Konstantin Chaykin as ordered by the company “Yantarny Dom” (Amber House). It is the only piece of its kind. The clock features the lunar phases indicator and moving constellations. The most stunning extra feature of this movement is the module indicating dates and months of the Islamic calendar, this module being the invention and creation of Konstantin Chaykin. The Islamic calendar is of utmost importance for religious practices of the Arab people as the dates of all Islamic fasting periods and holidays were prescribed by Allah strictly according to Hegira lunar calendar.
