Welcome Kankakee Community College student athletes, parents, Cavaliers supporters and fans!

There is excitement and energy as we prepare for another year at KCC, and we are so happy to have all of you along for the journey. The last year was amazing for KCC, our teams, and our players. There were Cavaliers teams and players with national NJCAA rankings and tournament appearances, All-Tournament players, All-Americans, national academic honor award winners, and a major league baseball draft pick. The softball team won the Division II National Championship, had a player named National Tournament MVP and Coach Dennis Clark was inducted into the NJCAA Hall of Fame. Even more amazing was watching the continued development—academically and personally—of our student athletes.

This year also promises to be an exciting one. I am proud of the role KCC plays in the overall growth of our

student athletes, and equally proud of how our Cavaliers teams represent our excellent institution. The student athletes of KCC live our motto to Start Here. Finish Anywhere.

It is my firm belief that education is the key to all of our life successes, and I remain committed to our mission to develop leaders. Our athletic program, and each sport, begin with the strong dedication of our coaching staff and are supported by the KCC Board of Trustees and our community. As parents and educators, we pledge to join your efforts to provide encouragement and support to our student athletes.

I wish our student athletes success both as students and athletes at KCC. It is an honor to be part of the Cavaliers family. I would like to thank the parents of our student athletes, each member of the coaching staff, and the members of our Cavalier Club who help to support our athletic teams.

Please join myself, the Board of Trustees, faculty, staff and all Cavaliers fans in wishing our teams and coaches success this year. I challenge everyone to come out and watch our teams play.Go Cavs!

John Avendano, Ph.D.President

Head Coach Gary Sien took over the reins of the Cavaliers volleyball program in March 2000.

In 15 seasons at KCC, Sien’s teams have won two Region IV titles, 31 of his players have earned All-Region honors and ten have been All-Americans. A veteran coach of over 900 matches, Sien has compiled 574 wins in women’s volleyball and 725 wins overall. His 2003 team was ranked #1 in the nation for 3 weeks. On November 3, 2014, Sien earned his 500th win at KCC. His current win total (502) places him second all time in Region IV history.

From 1989 to 1995, Sien coached at Trinity International University in Deerfield. At Trinity, he was men’s volleyball coach for seven seasons, winning two conference championships and third place at National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) nationals. He also coached the women’s program for four seasons. Sien coached three All-Americans on the women’s side and three Conference players of the year on the men’s. At Kendall College in Evanston, Sien was the assistant women’s coach for two seasons and head coach of the first Kendall men’s volleyball team (1998).

Sien is a 1989 graduate of Trinity International University, then Trinity College, with a degree in physical education. He helped form Trinity’s men’s volleyball team, was captain and named most valuable player twice. Sien also toured Peru, Ecuador and Venezuela while competing inter-nationally with the Athletes in Action volleyball team in 1986. Along with his coaching duties, Sien serves as coordinator of the KCC Fitness Center.

MEET THE COACHES

Local product Janelle Sundine (Wilmington) returns to the ranks of the Cavaliers after two stellar seasons (2013-14) as a starting middle blocker.

Sundine ranks #9 all time in sets played (333) and #7 all time in total blocks (230). She was named to the All-Tournament team at the

Lincoln Land Community College Tournament in 2014. She is Coach Sien’s first alumnae to assist him in his 16 seasons and it has always been a dream of her’s to coach someday.

Sundine graduated from KCC with an Associates in General Studies this past May. Her plan is to continue her education with a degree in the college’s Radiography program.

Competing with the Uno Volleyball Club out of Joliet, Sundine has participated in 4 USA Volleyball Junior National tournaments. She

attended Providence Catholic High School up to her junior year. As a graduate of Wilmington High School, Sundine was selected to the

2013 Kankakee Daily Journal First Team All-Area squad.

She will primarily be working with the middle blockers and with the team’s blocking system.

The 2014 Cavaliers graduated 6 hitters who combined for nearly 2000 kills. The 2015 team will have seven of eight hitters who are freshmen. The team brings back an experienced setting duo and two defensive specialists/libero.As in 2014, the Cavaliers will have one of the most competitive schedules in the Region. They will play four Division I teams in the first six matches. After that, the squad will compete in one of the most prestigious NJCAA tournaments of the year at Owens Community College in Ohio. Then they will face the second two- thirds of the season within Re-gion 4, which features a number of tough contests against long time rivals. The ultimate prize is the Region 4 Cham-pionship trophy and a ticket to the NJCAA Division II National Tournament in Phoenix, Ariz.

2015 PREVIEW

Despite beginning the year unranked, the Kankakee Community College Women’s Volleyball team ended the 2014 sea-son as the #20 ranked team in the final NJCAA national poll. The Cavaliers were also the number one ranked team in the East District of Region IV, heading into the Region tournament with a 14-1 District record. The year ended with a loss in the Region IV Championship match as the team finished with a 35-17 mark. Three team members were selected to the All Region IV team with one receiving the most votes from the Region. Two additional team members were selected to Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society.

DEFENSIVE SPECIALISTS/LIBEROThe two players in this position saw plenty of game action in 2014 and their experience will be relied upon greatly in the upcoming season.

Rachel Greene (St. Anne) saw some time in all three back row positions and performed well in sev-eral close contests. Greene played in 57 sets and put up 79 digs and is another very good student, as she was selected to join Phi Theta Kappa honor society.Holly Koch of Footville, Wis. is returning after an exceptional second half of the 2014 season. She had 338 digs in 150 sets and found her consistency after some technique work and adjustments and won the starting libero position midway into the season.

OPPOSITE/ OUTSIDE HITTERAll of the hitters can play other front positions.

Abby Carroll (Surrey, B.C. Canada) is the first inter-national player in the program’s history. She will play primarily on the outside but is capable of also being on the right side. Carroll finished the 2014 season with 132 kills in 75 sets. She played for the Coquitlam Ducks Volleyball Club, one of the most competitive clubs in western Canada.Hannah Meskill of Benton Harbor, MI is a well-rounded, six rotation player. She was named All Region at St. Joseph High School where she had 263 kills and 261 digs as an outside hitter. Possessing exceptional first contact skills, she can put in as a defensive specialist in a pinch. Meskill played for the Kaepa Krush Volleyball Club.Hailing from San Antonio, TX, Emily Pearce is another all-around athlete who will see time as an opposite hitter as well as in the middle. At Highlands High School, Pearce put down 154 kills and had 330 digs. She received All District honors for academics, basket-ball and for volleyball.Herscher’s Emily Webster continues the theme of athletic players for the 2015 Cavaliers. She received Interstate Eight All Conference recognition, being named to the All Area team for Kankakee Daily Journal and was the team’s most valuable player. She will see time in both “pin’ positions, on the left and right side. Sophomore Courtney Welch (Braidwood), the lone returning hitter had some opportunities in all three front row positions in 2014. This year, she is receiving training with the middle hitters and could again play in all three hitting spots.

MIDDLE BLOCKERSThe middles are all freshmen but they have the potential to be as outstanding in the position as in previous years.

Jorden Grieff (Pontiac) is one of the most versatile athletes on the teams. She is capable of playing all three front row positions in all six rotations for each. At Pontiac High School, she had 178 kills, almost averaging 3 kills per set, and 251 digs. Grieff was selected Corn Belt All Conference and com-peted for the Illini Elite Volleyball Club. Another excellent student, she is a National Honor Society member and class valedictorian. Shannon Metzner (Port Coquitlam, B.C. Canada), is the second international student-athlete to ever commit as a Cavalier volleyball player. A middle blocker, she was named the Most Valuable Player at the Handsworth Tournament. Metzner graduated with honors from Riverside Secondary and played for Coquitlam Ducks Volleyball Club, where Abby Carroll was a club teammate of hers.Britton Seaman (Fairmount) received All County, Vermilion Valley All Conference, Champaign News Gazette All Area and Commercial News All Area post season honors. She had 268 kills and 46 blocks in her senior season and competed for the Peak Performance Volleyball Club. Seaman graduated with honors and is also a member of the National Honor Society.

SETTERSFor the first time since 2010, the Cavaliers will return two second year setters.

Haley Fairfield (Pontiac) dished out 1244 set assists in 2014, good for #10 in total assists in the nation and was named to the All-Tournament team for the KCC Invitational. Besides her setting abilities, Fairfield offers a well-rounded game with her defensive and serving skills (48 aces, second on team). Clifton’s Kaelyn Vaughn played in 97 sets as the team’s second setter as she recorded 298 assists. She can play the back row as well and could be called upon to do so in that role. An excellent student, Vaughn was selected to Phi Theta Kappa and will once again receive an academic scholarship as a student in the KCC Bacca-laureate Scholars Program.
