WHAT WILL STUDENTS WORK ON IN NOVEMBER?

1st Lots of wonderful learning will take place in first grade during marking period two. In writing we write informative, narrative, and opinion pieces. In Math we will continue to understand the meaning of the equal sign, compose and decompose two digit numbers, and solve addition and subtraction story problems using multiple strategies. In Reading, we will work on describing major events in a story, asking and answering questions, taking part in collaborative conversations, and identifying the main topic and key details of informative text. In Social Studies we will learn about social skills, and begin a study of culture focusing on differences between the past and present. Last but not least, in Science we will study the movement of non-living objects and the effects of magnets on objects.

Ms. Yeron

2nd

In Reading, students will continue working with informational texts, asking and answering questions about key details, the meaning of words/phrases, and text features. In Writing, students will write informational texts that introduce a topic, develop points, and end with a concluding statement. In Math, students will identify and describe odd and even numbers, use mental strategies to add and subtract within 20, and add 2-digit numbers within 100 (composing and decomposing). In Science, students will classify objects based on their observable properties, and examine and describe the parts of objects. In Social Studies, students will identify and describe places on Earth (continents, oceans, poles, equator, etc.), their physical characteristics, and how people meet their needs. Ms. Everett-Herrera

STEM Fall is in the air! For the month of November we will have rockets and rover explorations, prosthetic elephant trunk engineering, shade structure creations and more! Students in grades 2nd-5th are also beginning their projects to be submitted to the ExploraVision National Science Competition in February. Make sure to ask your second, third, fourth, or fifth graders about what technology they are researching and revising with their group!

Ms. Ramirez

Music

In music class, the 2nd and 5th graders have been preparing for their trips to Strathmore Hall, and the whole school is preparing for our sing along in December. PK-1st grades are learning about keeping a steady beat and matching pitch, 2nd grade is learning to identify the different instrument families, 3rd grade is learning about notes on the musical staff, 4th grade is learning to take rhythmic dictation, and 5th grade is learning about chords and chord changes in blues music. We are singing great songs, playing instruments and learning fun music games. Ms. Hines

4th

Math: In the second marking period, the students will be using the time table to learn to multiply and divide to solve word problems. It is important that your child practices his/her time tables every day at home!

Reading: We are always encouraging all 4th graders to read at home to become proficient readers. Please make sure that your child is reading at home and talk to them about there are learning at school, especially during reading time. Talking about what they are reading helps students identify the main idea and supporting details which they use to summarize any text they read.

Social Studies/Science: In science we will continue learning about organisms and their environments. It is important that you listen to your child when they talk about what they are learning at school. Having these conversations reinforces and motives students to learn! Finally, in social studies we will be learning about the European exploration: origins, destinations & goals European explorers & Native American societies interact.

Mr. Figueroa

PE

This month, our students will be focusing on the skills of overhand/underhand throwing and catching to stationary and moving targets. We will be studying the effects of exercise on our body as we explore the response of our lungs, skin, muscles, and heart to physical activity. We will also be learning aspects of teamwork, sportsmanship, goal setting, and effective effort in various gameplay situations.

Mr. McCarthy

From the Desk of the Reading Specialist

From the desk of your Reading Specialist….

I can’t believe November is already upon us and that means 2 things —book fairs and parent teacher conferences. I love them both!

The scholastic book fair is currently being held in the Kemp Mill media center or you can order on line this week or next. I hope that you had a chance to visit in person or on line to purchase books for your child to read because having books in your home offers many benefits.

Research has clearly proven that reading aloud to your child is important. Read alouds have a profound impact on vocabulary, conceptual, academic and intellectual de-velopment. Parents often wonder how to get the most out of reading aloud to their children. Be thoughtful about your selection of what you read aloud. Consider your child’s interests, but try to extend their range of knowledge by picking books they might not read on their own. Doing this generally introduces varied vocabulary and topics that encourage interesting and thoughtful discussions. With that being said, make sure to pause during reading to check for understanding, clear up any miscon-ceptions and allow your child to make and confirm predictions about what might happen next. This is also an opportune time for you and your child to identify words that they might not know or completely understand. You can use context clues, pictures, examples, non-examples, antonyms and/or synonyms to help your child develop understanding of the text. Shared reading is another strategy that helps readers make meaning from text. Read several sentences, pause, discuss what you’ve read and then have your child do the same thing. Shared ownership of the reading and discussion will help your child internalize vocabulary as well as understand the author’s message. Parent teacher conferences provide an opportunity to learn more about how your child’s learning is progressing, especially in reading. Students’ reading is measured in terms of a reading levels or ranges. You will want to know what level your child is reading on and how that compares to the MCPS monthly targets. Also ask specifically about your child’s strengths as a reader and in what areas they may benefit from in additional practice or enrichment. Ask how you can help at home. MCPS offers addi-tional information and resources for parents on understanding your child’s reading level. I have provided the link for your convenience.http://www.montgomeryschoolsmd.org/uploadedFiles/info/grading/EndOfYearReading-ParentGuide.pdf I hope that you will enjoy and make the most of these two exciting November events. PTA News Hello KMES families! Our school’s Parent Teacher Association (PTA) is working hard this year to support EXCELLENCE IN EDUCATION at Kemp Mill. If you missed our first meeting, we hope to see you Tuesday, December 6th at 6:30pm. At the meeting in October, the group approved our budget for this school year where we plan to pay for buses for field trips, assemblies at school, buses for after school programs, STEM night, science day, field trips for all grades, events to show our school staff we appreciate them, materials and resources for school classrooms, family dances, multicultural night, 5th grade graduation events, and more!

Thanks to our membership chairperson, Mrs. Kirner, we have almost reached our goal of 100 members! If you haven’t joined PTA yet, please join us to share your ideas and together we can help our kids achieve more! PTA membership forms are at school on the PTA bulletin board at school. Your $10 membership is critical to our group’s success.

During October and November, our group organized a family fall dance where families had fun dancing, eating, playing games, and creating art projects. The Book Fair was also a great success! Thanks to all the parents who helped during the Book Fair and bought new books for their children to read at home. Lastly, PTA members contacted the County to raise concerns over the County’s plans to remove our school’s computer lab.

Sr. Figueroa

STEM

El Otoño está en el aire! Para el

mes de Noviembre vamos a

tener cohetes y exploraciones,

ingeniería de trompas

prostéticas de elefante ,

creaciones de estructura de

sombra y mucho más! Los

estudiantes en los grados 2 al 5

también están comenzando sus

proyectos para ser presentados

en el Concurso Nacional de

Ciencia Explora Visión en

Febrero. Asegúrese de

preguntarle a su segundo,

tercero, cuarto o quinto grado
