Oxford Library Director Earns National Honor

Friday, March 27, 2009

By Marcella Peyre-Ferry, Special to the

Local News

OXFORD — Those who know Oxford Public

Library Executive Director Ken Pienkos know he is

a person who gets involved and gets things done.

The Library Journal agrees, naming him one of its

Movers and Shakers of the year.

A few dozen Movers and Shakers are selected each year from nominations nationwide. So far, there have only

been 15 individuals from Pennsylvania recognized in the seven years since the program was started.

"It's very exciting for the library and the library system," Pienkos said. "It's a very exclusive club in the library

world."

Donna Murray, director of the Bayard Taylor Memorial Library, nominated Pienkos. "He's long been known as

the programming (and marketing) king of the Chester County Library System," she said in her nomination. "His

programs have included an astonishing range of topics and interests reflective of the diverse community, and

have earned the library not only an amazing amount of press coverage, but also much respect from the

community and increased use of the library."

"We all do good things. I've just done them in the same place for the same community," Pienkos said.

The Library Journal highlighted just a few of the programs and activities that Pienkos has initiated, including

using an environmental education grant for an environmental family fun fair, starting an English language

program for the Spanish-speaking community with free childcare during the classes, and using a $20,000

Verizon grant to hold a teen podcasting session and purchase a Wii video game system and flat-screen TV for

the library.

Pienkos is proud of the role the library has taken in the borough's effort to revitalize and energize the

downtown. "We've all the people in a community making every effort to engage and invite people in," he said.

"The end result is economic development and it's happening naturally."

Community involvement for Pienkos goes beyond the walls of the library. He is a founding board member of

the Oxford Arts Alliance as well as other community organizations. "I have a dialogue with everyone in the

community. I'm on eight nonprofit boards," he said.

Pienkos' recognition comes at a time when changes are starting for the Oxford Library. Plans are in the works

for a building expansion, with groundbreaking hoped for later this year. Improvements to the building will try to

keep up with the ongoing improvements to services at the library and the friendly atmosphere. "The overall

welcoming environment stands out.

Tolerance and diversity stand out," he said.

Considering its appeal to so many people, widespread community support for the library is not surprising.

Pienkos credits some of the success of the Oxford Public Library to the support of local government. "The

municipalities and the state support keep the nuts and bolts in place," he said. "You really have to establish a

dialogue with your elected officials. I don't know if libraries across the country think that way."

The Oxford Public Library's mission is to be "the core of the community," which means reaching out to people

from all segments of the community and welcoming everyone. That effort has resulted in consistent growth in

members and use of the library and its services.

One reason Pienkos is pleased to be recognized as a Mover and Shaker is because it also reflects well on the

library and the Oxford community. "It always seems that special things are happening in other places. Without

realizing it, we are making things happen and people are noticing the things we do," he said. "I never look at

big things and aspire to them. I look at small things and build on them."
