Christmas is coming fast and what could be better than singing carols in Cornish?
There will be Christmas services entirely in Cornish at St Ive (near Liskeard) on the 16th December and at St Euny (Redruth) on the 30th December. It’s great for fluent Cornish speakers to sing and hear a service in Cornish, but also for beginners and those who don’t speak Cornish, it’s a good opportunity to experience the beauty of our language! ‘GoCornish.org’ is a new website for people who want to learn Cornish. It has been designed to encourage new people to have a go at Cornish and to support beginners, but there is plenty there for teachers and schools as well — and there will be more added in 2019.
It has been designed and published by Golden Tree as part of their contract with Cornwall Council to replace Learn Cornish Now. Go Cornish is full of resources for beginners, people who just want to learn a word or two and resources for classes to help teachers.
For the first time, all of the Porth books will be online with resources for school teachers. And there is a new app called Magi Ann and this is perfect for 3–4 year old children – but older people will like it too.
The website is available now to the language groups and to Cornish classes so that they can test it. But there will be a grand launch in January for the website and for Magi Ann — watch this space for more details…

The first of December was the proper start of Christmas in Liskeard.
On the Friday, Golden Tree, Liskeard Town Council and Devon and Cornwall Railway Partnership organised ‘Christmas trains’.
The first train was for children and was completely full. Father Christmas was there teaching the children a few words of Cornish and giving away sprouts! In the other

Liskeard Christmas train afterwards, everyone sang Cornish carols all the way to Looe and back to Liskeard.
The next morning, there was a treasure hunt for the children of the area. 50 children from the seven schools there where Golden Tree are teaching Cornish took part and completed the trail (almost 100 started!). This was their chance to use their Cornish in shops in Liskeard and show off what they had learnt. The seven schools are: Darite, Hillfort, Coads Green, Trenode, Liskeard, St Cleer and a home school group.
That evening, there was ‘An Helgh Gwyls’ (‘the Wild Hunt’) – a short performance of the story of ‘Dando and his dogs’. A group of twenty people performed the short play and songs all in Cornish in the middle of the town, in five pubs and in the town hall. This year, Councillor Jessie Foote made for a fine white stag in the play. It was excellent to see so much Cornish all around Liskeard and almost everyone in the town must have heard the language being spoken or sung at least once that weekend! Many thanks to Liskeard Town Council, Golden Tree, and to the Devon and Cornwall Railway Partnership for their work!

Ten years ago, some Cornish speakers were recorded by MAGA. The aim was to record their spoken Cornish and their thoughts about the state of the language at that time.
Now, a public history student from University of Exeter is helping the Cornish Language Office to organise the files and update the consent letters. This is so that we can publish some of the recordings online and conserve all of the recordings at Kresen Kernow. The student is called Alex Hardy and in the coming weeks, he will be writing to the people who were recorded with a new consent letter to complete.
We will also need to think about new recordings early in the new year. If you have suggestions for who would be important to record this time round, please write to [email protected].

Lowender Peran
Tree performed some new songs in Cornish written especially for the festival. Other groups sang in Cornish, including Newquay Rowing Club, Oll an Gwella and Tir ha Tavas, and these groups work to promote the language through the year.

Once again, Lowender Peran welcomed musicians and dancers from the six Celtic countries to Newquay and there was more Cornish language used at the festival.
All of the groups were introduced in Cornish and there were a lot of songs sung in Cornish.
