Stopping by Woods on a Snowy EveningBY ROBERT FROST

Whose woods these are I think I know.   His house is in the village though;   He will not see me stopping here   To watch his woods fill up with snow.

My little horse must think it queer   To stop without a farmhouse near   Between the woods and frozen lake   The darkest evening of the year.

He gives his harness bells a shake   To ask if there is some mistake.   The only other sound’s the sweep   Of easy wind and downy flake.

The woods are lovely, dark and deep,   But I have promises to keep,   And miles to go before I sleep,   And miles to go before I sleep

Possible Answers:1. The speaker stops to watch the woods fill with snow, he wants to watch the frozen lake and to listen to the sound of silence. We can infer that he wants to enjoy the beauty of nature. We can infer that he is a man who loves nature, he is touched by the beauty of nature and enjoys a peaceful and quiet time. We can also infer that he is torn between his responsibilities and his wish to stay in the woods and admire nature.

2. The speaker infers his horse might think it's queer to stop by the woods, without a farmhouse near. It is so cold outside and there is no reason to stop. 3. I think the speaker chose those words to show that nature can be lovely and mysterious at the same time. Lovely- reminds me of beauty. Dark and deep- remind me of something mysterious. 4.a) The traveler who travels through the woods is a person who lives his life. In life, we have to make decisions, we have duties. We can't ignore our duties and only enjoy and have fun. The traveler would like to stay- enjoy and have fun, but he is aware of the fact that he can't ignore his promises, his duties and his responsibilities. Therefore, he must go on. It can also be explained as the decision between leaving this world- death, and living life with all its joys and difficulties. At the end of the poem the speaker/ traveler thinks about the promises he has to keep and the long way he has to travel. It represents the journey of life with responsibilities that we have in life.

7. The HOTS used: Inferring. The speaker stops to watch the woods fill with snow, he wants to watch the frozen lake and to listen to the sound of silence. We can infer that he wants to enjoy the beauty of nature. We can assume he appreciates the view of the lovely, dark and deep woods and the sound of the wind and downy flake. We can conclude that he is a person who loves nature, he is touched by the beauty of nature and enjoys peaceful and quiet times.

8. The traveler is a person who lives his life. In life, we have to make decisions, we have duties. The traveler would like to stay in the woods- enjoy and have fun, but he is aware of the fact that he can't ignore his promises. Therefore, he must go on.

The speaker's journey through the woods represents the journey of life. The woods represent nature. The village and the farmhouse represent society and duties. On the journey of life we have to make decisions, the speaker in the poem must make a decision too.

9. The message of the poem is that a person must concentrate on fulfilling his promises and his duties that come before the pleasures of life.

10. The information is about the way farmers in New England feel about the winter snow and how they feel about hard work.Winter snow is a good thing in their perspective. They see it as something that comforts them after a time of hard work on their farms. Hard work has a high value in their eyes.In the poem, the speaker enjoys the winter snow. He stops in order to watch the woods fill with snow, to watch the frozen lake and to listen to the sound of the sweep of the wind and the downy flake.Although the woods are lovely, dark and deep, the speaker says he can't stay and enjoy the scenery because he has promises to keep. These promises can be duties he has to fulfill. The speaker feels his duties come before the pleasure of staying in the woods.Like the farmers of New England, who value hard work and put it above everything else, the speaker puts his duties before his pleasure. In his eyes, his duties come first.
