October Key Spouse “Shout-Out”

Hilary Beaumont is one of the most enthusiastic, caring, and motivated military spouses I know. From the first day I met her, I knew that her positive energy and her friendly smile would make a difference to our spouses and the 1 SOCS family. She goes above and beyond her duties to support, inform and provide resources and guidance for our spouses! From squadron events to baby meals to spouse functions, she gives it her all to make sure that spouses are getting the information or assistance they need to flourish here at Hurlburt Field. As a military spouse for almost 9 years, her experiences of moving from place to place made her realize the importance of camaraderie. She definitely follows the saying "bloom where you are planted"!

Thank you Mrs. Wendy McGovern

Also a Shout-Out to Samantha Cristescu for being a creative genius with ideas, logos, artwork, jazzing up documents. She just makes life prettier.

Thank you Mrs. Melissa Norton

Two keys to weather safety are to prepare for the risks and to act on those preparations when alerted by emergency officials. Some highlights on how to prepare and take action are available below: Gather Information: Know if you live in an evacuation area. Assess your risks and know your home's vulnerability. Plan & Take Action: Everyone needs to be pre-pared for the unexpected. Your friends and family may not be together when disaster strikes. How will you find each other? Will you know if your children or parents are safe? You may have to evacuate or be confined to your home. What will you do if water, gas, electricity or phone services are shut off?

Supplies Kit: Put together a basic disaster supplies kit and consider storage locations for different situations. Emergency Plans: Develop and document

Evacuation: Review guidelines to allow for enough time to pack and inform friends and family if you need to leave your home. When waiting out a storm be careful, the danger may not be over yet...Be alert for tornadoes and the calm “eye” of the storm. Recover: Wait until the area is declared safe before returning home. Also, remember that recovering from a disaster is usually a gradual process.

Expecting trick-or-treaters or party guests?

Follow these tips to help make the festivities fun and

safe for everyone:

Provide healthier treats for trick-or-treaters such as

low-calorie treats and drinks. For party guests, offer

a variety of fruits, vegetables, and cheeses.

Use party games and trick-or-treat time as an oppor-

tunity for kids to get their daily dose of 60 minutes

of physical activity.

Be sure walking areas and stairs are well-lit and free

of obstacles that could result in falls.

Keep candle-lit jack o'lanterns and luminaries away

from doorsteps, walkways, landings, and curtains.

Place them on sturdy tables, keep them out of the

reach of pets and small children, and never leave

them unattended.

Remind drivers to watch out for trick-or-treaters and

HALLOWEEN HEALTH AND SAFETY TIPS

Autumn holidays like Halloween and Harvest Day are fun times for children of all ages, who can dress up in cos-tumes, enjoy parties, enjoy fall fruits and vegetables, and eat yummy treats. These celebrations also provide a chance to give out healthy snacks, get physical activity, and focus on safety. Check out these tips to help make the festivities fun and safe for trick-or-treaters and party guests.

Going trick-or-treating?

Swords, knives, and sim-ilar costume accessories should be short, soft, and flexible.

Avoid trick-or-treating alone. Walk in groups or with a trusted adult.

Fasten reflective tape to costumes and bags to help drivers see you.

Examine all treats for choking hazards and tampering before eating them. Limit the amount of treats you eat.

Hold a flashlight while trick-or-treating to help you see and others see you.

Always WALK and don't run from house to house. Always test make-up in a small area first.

Look both ways before crossing the street. Use established crosswalks wherever possible.

Lower your risk for serious eye injury by not wearing decorative contact lenses.

Only walk on sidewalks whenever possi-ble, or on the far edge of the road facing traf-fic to stay safe.

Wear well-fitting masks, costumes, and shoes to avoid blocked vision, trips, and falls.

Eat only factory- wrapped treats. Avoid eating homemade treats made by strangers.

Enter homes only if you're with a trusted adult. Only visit well-lit houses. Don't stop at dark houses. Never accept rides from strangers.

Never walk near lit candles or luminaries. Be sure to wear flame-resistant costumes.
