Kiama Downs and Minnamurra are located to the north of Kiama and could be considered “suburbs” of Kiama.

Why Kiama Downs/Minnamurra?

• Socio-demographics

• Geographical features

Who are the first five?• Tasmania was first in Australia and not NBNCo site.

• Armidale, Kiama, Townsville, Brunswick and Willunga are the first five mainland locations.

• We have held a few teleconferences.

• No where was there a central location for ideas, information or assistance.

• Different libraries, locations and environments have lead to different methods and directions.

• Our experiences of lack of information are remarkably similar, so we decided ………

– Share and continue communicating with each other– Manage the opportunity to meet our community needs. – Share with other libraries as the NBN wave moved across

Australia.

The (Draft) Grant Announcement

What is a digital hub?

How to investigate and facilitate innovative solutions for a digital hub?

Who do we start talking to?

What are the costings and staffing implications, if any?

What does experience the broadband mean?

What can we showcase something when we don’t know what it is?

Are the other libraries in the same quandry?

????

The First Five Sites were Guinea Pigs for what is to follow.

• Telstra had not signed over their cable pits so NBN could use them.• Although, in the case of the library, a digital hub was what we could apply for grant money, no explanation of a digital hub was available.• No idea what grant money was available for what, when or how.• Council Admin Execs feeling anxious and unwilling to participate.• More agendas unsighted. Local, State, Federal and all local contributors.

“The library is no longer a warehouse for dead books. Just in time for the information economy, the library ought to be the local nerve center for information.”
