i’m halfway on my journey to motherhood, reaching the 20-week mark this week. thank you all for your kind words and congratulations at our exciting news. i am enjoying the first movements of my baby alongside the heartburn (oh the

First launching onto the market 18 months ago, husband and wife team Peta and Charles Stinson are the dynamic duo behind the burgeoning brand.

it was while living in fiji three years ago and dressing her youngest child in organic clothes that the sapling seed was planted. “some organic fabrics are beautiful and have such lovely prints, but chemical dyes are used and chemical processes are used in the dying and printing process. it didn’t make sense to me to buy organic, yet still have all those nasties in the fabric! that’s when i decided i wanted to do something different, and affordable”, says Peta. the sapling range is all gots (global organic textile standard) certified with all garments and trimmings made from 100% organic certified cotton and printed with organic vegetable dyes that are free from toxic chemicals and heavy metals.

Before the birth of the royal baby sapling received an order from the duchess of Cambridge. i can’t even imagine the excitement that would have ensued following that order! “we actually sent out a range of goodies, which if course was exciting, but we’ll be even more excited if we can grab an elusive shot of the bubby in sapling! how amazing would that be?” one thing is for sure that whatever Prince george is spotted wearing will be the new sapling best seller. Peta’s advice to other new mums planning their baby’s wardrobe? “don’t plan too much. grab the essentials, and all the fun stuff that’s too cute to pass up. have fun, and buy as you go!”

Parents to three young boys (max 9, finn 6 and oliver 3), Charles and Peta are based on the gold Coast after having spent a few years overseas feeding Charles wanderlust and the family love of adventure. running a business on top of such a busy brood must be a challenge but the pair seem to have it down pat. Peta manages the front end including design, wrapping, mail outs and communications while Charles is responsible for the back end of the business from orders, warehouse, photography and mailing. the flexibility of running your own business is a drawcard for Peta, “i can take my computer or sketch pad to the park and work while the kids are playing. i can still do pick ups and drop offs and work around them, although it also means that i end up working late and on weekends!”

food on the floor, liquid covering the table and not a second to enjoy your own meal is a scenario most mums would be able to relate to. fussy eaters, restless wrigglers and kids being kids causes much mayhem at dinner tables the world over each and every day. mother Jo turner was only too aware of the challenges of family mealtimes and so with her son set about creating a child booster seat perfect for use in the home and portable for use when eating out. the toosh Coosh kids’ support seat was the result and mums around the country are loving this simple idea that is so effective.

for most children over three years of age, they are too big for a high chair but sitting in a regular chair leaves them reaching for the table. a situation that inevitably results in mess and also frustration from both the child and the parents. while many parents resort to cushions or even phone books to solve the dilemma, they still aren’t the ideal solution for this problem.

glowing!

Are there any sizing differences between maternity and regular jeans that women should be aware of?

no, the great thing about our maternity jeans is that our mum’s-to-be can continue to wear their normal jean size, as we’ve made the necessary adjustments to see them through their pregnancy without having to try on bigger sizes.

The Jeanswest range features ‘over the bump’ bands. What is the benefit of these as opposed to ‘under the bump’ styles?

The skin connection

How to make a Lion Mask, from Riot Art & Craft!

Step 1. Templateline one of the mask shapes up to your plate, and trace the eyelids into the centre of the plate. you will be using both, so they will need to fit together once decorated. Step 2. Lion’s maneCut your light yellow & orange felt into strips approx 2cm wide. do the same with your gold honeycomb. loop the felt over, and staple around the back of the mask shape in alternating colours. once finished, take any single layer felt offcuts and your honeycomb and slot in front of the loops to create a bit of texture.

Step 3. Lions faceonce happy with the arrangement of the mane, glue deep yellow felt over the front of the mask, hiding any staples and trim to size. take your mask shape, and glue onto the plate, so that the eyes match up.

Step 4. DetailsCut out a triangular nose, eyelids, and two circles to decorate the face. add folded pipe cleaners for whiskers. once you have the shape outline for the bottom of the plate, trim it along the circular felt to match.

Circular template, such as a bottle lid- approx 3cm diameter

Step 1. Templatehold the plate up to your face and work out where the eyes need to be. draw a dot with a graphite pencil, and then using a circular template (such as the lid of a bottle) draw circles around these. Carefully cut your eyes out. Step 2. Eyesdouble over your white foam and cut out a large teardrop – use the same template to cut out the eyes. Place these over the eye holes, and use as a guide to cut off the bottom of the plate, following the outline of the foam. Cut out a circular part at the top too. Step 3. Decorate Before you glue the foam down, cut out around 25 small scalloped crepe pieces (make sure they’re double layered by folding it over) and then paint a very thin layer of Pva and place these around the inner circle of the plate to create a feathered edge. leave the remaining rim of the plate exposed. next slot in your sequins behind the feathered edge. now glue on your foam teardrops, add extra scalloped feathers if there are any exposed areas. scrunch up your crepe squares, and glue these between the foam tear drops. finally cut out two round circles for the eyes, once again using your circular template, and finally a beak. once dry, staple a piece of elastic to either side, and it’s ready to wear.

Herby Barbeque Lamb Serves 10

1 packet the spice tailor mangalore herb Curry 350g – 400g lamb rump cut into large 10 3cm cubes 3 large cloves garlic, peeled 12g fresh ginger, grated 2 tablespoon lemon juice 1 tablespoon vegetable oil 1 teaspoon cumin and garam masala powders teaspoon black pepper small red onion, finely sliced

using a mortar and pestle grind the spices from the spice tailor spice packet until fine, add all or half of the dried chilli for heat, adjust to suit individual tastes. the chilli takes time to break down in the pestle and mortar and can be left in small pieces but the spices should be fully ground.

Blend together the garlic, ginger, lemon juice, oil, the spices the sauce. taste and adjust the seasoning and lemon juice to taste, it should be tangy and slightly salty to taste. Place the lamb inside, cover and marinade for 1-3 hours in the fridge. take out of the fridge 30 minutes before eating and add the remainder of the sauce.

Preheat your oven to 180C. Place the really well coated lamb on an oiled baking sheet and cook for 8 minutes or until it’s cooked to individual likings. drizzle with some melted butter (optional) and serve hot in the roti round with one or two slivers of red onion on top.



Ricotta-stuf fed eggplants in a spiced tomato and spinach sauceServes 2-3

2 tablespoons vegetable oil1 medium-large eggplant, cut into thin 1cm slices lengthways1 packet of the spice tailor Punjabi tomato Curry sauce100ml milklarge handful of spinach, washed, finely shreddedsalt and freshly ground black pepper to tastericotta filing175g fresh ricotta½-¾ small red onion, finely chopped1 heaped tablespoon shredded fresh mint½-1 teaspoon small green chilli, finely chopped

heat about 1/3 of the oil in a large non-stick frying pan. lightly salt the eggplant slices and add as many slices as will fit in the pan, cook over a moderate flame until golden brown, turn over and repeat. this will take around three minutes a side. remove and place on a plate and repeat with the remaining slices until they are all cooked.

mix together all the ingredients for the filling; season with salt and pepper to taste.

grind together the fresh spices, from the spice sachet in the spice tailor Punjabi tomato Curry, in a mortar and pestle, leaving out the chilli and the bay leaf.

in the same frying pan, add the bay leaf and along with the sauces from the spice tailor Punjabi tomato Curry and bring to a boil. add the milk and simmer for 3-4 minutes. add in the spinach and half of the pounded garam masala or to taste. Cook until the sauce has a creamy consistency. taste and adjust seasoning as necessary.

in the meantime, place a tablespoon of filling, about an inch from one of the thin edges of each slice of eggplant, and carefully roll each up into a well stuffed log. once the sauce is creamy, carefully place the stuffed eggplants back into the saucepan, turn the heat down, spoon over the sauce so they are covered and allow to warm through for about 3 minutes before serving with some rice, crusty buttered bread or a salad.



Shepherd’s PieServes 6

500g lean mince1/2 cup gf fruit chutney400g cauliflower1 tablespoon olive oil

Preheat the oven to 180°C. in a non-stick frying pan, brown the mince over medium heat. season with sea salt and pepper and mix the chutney through. reduce the heat and simmer for 10 minutes. meanwhile, remove the florets from the cauliflower. Cook the florets in a saucepan of gently boiling water until tender, 4 to 6 minutes. drain, add the olive oil, sea salt and pepper, and mash until nice and smooth. Pour the mince into a baking dish, top with an even layer of mashed cauliflower, and season again lightly. Bake until the top is golden around the rim, about 15 minutes.

Sticky Citrus RibsServes 4

2 oranges zested and juiced1 tbs grated ginger½ cup hoisin sauce1kg pork spare ribs

Combine the oranges, ginger and hoisin sauce in a large bowl and add the ribs. Coat well, cover and refrigerate for at least 3 hours or overnight. Preheat oven to 200°C. Place ribs in a tray and cover with foil. Bake for 30 minutes, remove foil and bake for another 10 minutes or until the marinade turns into a sticky caramel and the pork is nice and brown.


Road testing – Aeroplane’s Sweet Treats

Both the Jelly slices and the mousses were so simple to make. the Jelly slices take slightly longer to prepare as each layer needs to be set in the fridge but the mousses were ready to eat within five minutes, although i set them in the fridge for a firmer mousse.

who doesn’t have great memories of eating aeroplane Jelly as a kid? the strawberry Jelly slice and lime Jelly slice take you straight back to those memories but with a modern twist – a biscuit base and a creamy middle layer with the jelly set on top. a word of warning – these treats are very sweet so you could even cut the finished product into less than the recommended 12 pieces as a small piece is certainly sweet enough. if you are serving the slice at a birthday party, the layers can easily be cut if a child doesn’t like a particular layer so everybody wins!

the mousse was really surprisingly amazing. firstly, i was impressed with how quickly it was ready. i was skeptical how the packet mousse and 500ml of full cream milk could produce a creamy mousse but i was pleasantly surprised. only a few minutes with the electric beater and it was ready. i served the mousse in glasses for a simple yet effective presentation. the packs do have a few ideas for how to add a twist (such as a honeycomb chocolate bar

500g chicken mince 1 spring onion, finely diced 2 tbs. gourmet garden thai fresh Blend 1 tbs. gourmet garden Coriander

mix all ingredients together and then using a tablespoon roll into balls and in a non-stick fry pan, on a medium-high heat, cook for 6 minutes or until browned and cooked through.

optional: serve with a little sweet chilli sauce to dip, and a green salad for dinner.


Fruit Loaf

350g dried fruit60g all-Bran original3/4 cup cold tea3 tablespoons maple syrup1 egg, lightly beaten1 cup (150g) self-raising flour1 teaspoon cinnamon¼ teaspoon mixed spice110g brown sugar1 apple, peeled and grated

Cut any large pieces of fruit to the size of a raison. Combine fruit, all-Bran, tea and syrup in a large bowl and set aside for at least an hour.

Preheat oven to 170C. line a 21 X 11 cm loaf tin with baking paper.

sift the flour and spices together. add the sugar and stir to combine. add the egg and flour mix to the fruit and stir to combine. add the apple and mix together. spoon into the prepared tin and bake for 1 hour or until a skewer inserted into the centre comes out clean.

Cool in tin before removing to a wire rack to cool.

Can be served spread with salt-reduced margarine or ricotta.

Can be sliced and frozen.

125g salt-reduced margarine, diced3 tablespoons maple syrup125g raw sugar2/3 cup (100g) self-raising flour50g all-Bran original165g untoasted muesli1 teaspoon vanilla essence

Preheat oven to 175g. Place the margarine, syrup and sugar in a medium saucepan over medium heat and stir until the margarine is just melted and ingredients combined. add remaining ingredients and stir to combine.

Place tablespoons of mixture onto two baking trays, flattening slightly, and bake for 15 minutes or until golden. allow to cool on trays.

Slow Cooked Soft Beef Tacos

1kg diced beef1 tbsp mexican chilli powder2 tsp ground coriander1 tsp sweet paprika¼ tsp chilli flakes1 tsp dried oregano½ tsp garlic flakes½ tsp onion flakes1 tsp flaked salt¼ tsp ground black pepper2 tbsp olive oil2 medium brown onions, thinly sliced4 cloves garlic, thinly sliced2 tbsp tomato paste2 x 400g cans diced tomatoes8 soft tortillas (recipe link here)200g sour cream, to serve100g grated taste cheese, to serve1 lime, cut into wedges, to serve

in a large bowl, place the beef and spices and toss to combine. set aside for 10 minutes.

Place the removable slow cooking bowl onto the stove top and heat over a medium heat. add the oil, onion and garlic and sauté until golden brown.

add the beef and sear until just starting to brown. stir through the tomato paste and diced tomatoes and place onto the ‘high’ setting and allow to cook for 6 hours, stirring every few hours.

serve on soft tortillas with sour cream and cheese and roll to close.

note: optional toppings include shredded lettuce, avocado, tomato, grated cheese, salsa and red onion.

sian leonard is a mother of three children, aged 15, 9 and 5, who was struggling to get the kids to drink water. with one of her children suffering a sugar sensitivity due to mild autism and adhd she was fed up with the sugary meltdowns that sugar-laden fruit drinks or orange juice inevitably led to. “as a mum of three, i’d had my fair share of watching my kids go from happy and content to climbing the walls and becoming irrational after too much sugar and i wasn’t alone; millions of parents around the world can relate to this.”

“much of our son’s behavior and ability to concentrate is almost entirely managed by limiting his sugar consumption”, said leonard. after exhaustive research and scouring of the supermarket shelves in new Zealand, leonard discovered that not only was there not a product that would meet her needs but also that she wasn’t alone when it came to fussy drinkers. the australian research tells a similar story with 64 per cent of aussie kids not drinking the recommended 1.5 litres of fluid per day.

drawing on her fourteen years experience in sales, marketing, product development, brand strategy

and category development leonard set out on a mission to develop the closest thing possible to water but with a little added flavour to satisfy the sweet tooth. “many popular juices contain as much sugar as Coke, but are deceptively marketed as healthy due to their fruit base.

“some beverage companies are using licensed popular characters that children and parents trust to encourage them to buy their products knowing they contain almost as much sugar as a can of Coke and that children will ‘pester’ their parents for them”, explains leonard. to combat this leonard and her kids created their own bottle design and characters: Bubble merfriend, Carter the deep water robot, Baloopa the starfish, milla in her magical Crabsuit and Jam the Jellyfish.

“the kids chose the logos, helped select the character underwater theme and evolved the story creation of two kids who thanks to Carter’s clever invention are able to wear magical suits which allow them to venture to the magical world of the Blue spring. the two ‘kids’ characters are inspired by their personalities and named after them ‘Carter and milla’, they tasted every flavour sample,

Sandwich Sushi

1 loaf of sliced wholemeal bread3-4 tbl spoons cream cheese1 small tin of tuna, drained well1 carrot, gratedhalf a cucumber, cut into batons1 chicken breast, diced50gm semi sun dried tomatoes, diced50gm feta, crumbled

1. Cut the crusts of each slice of bread and using a rolling pin, flatten. spread each slice with a small amount of cream cheese.

2. on the longer side of the bread, lay across some tuna in a line, followed by grated carrot and cucumber. roll the bread up, tucking the filling in as you go. Cut each roll into 3 pieces.

3. arrange on a platter and serve

Note: To help prevent your sandwich sushi from going stale once it’s served, arrange it on top of some lettuce leaves.



lets face there is only one reason kids love parties (aside from the presents). it’s because they know they will get to gorge themselves on lollies, cake, fairy, bread and all the food that they don’t usually get to eat.

But if your a mum looking for a healthier alternative to sausage rolls and party pies then give this sandwich sushi as go. they are so simple and everyone will love them. i’ve made these for a bunch of parties and they are always a hit.

you can fill your sandwich sushi with whatever you want. keep it simple for kids, ham and cheese, mashed egg and mayo or PBJ. for adults, ramp it up to gourmet with some smoked salmon and watercress or roast beef, mustard and rocket. the great thing about sandwich sushi is that it’s familiar. a twist on an old favourite. you will have to do very little convincing to get your kids to try it.

a whole loaf of bread will cater for lots of people, however use a few slices to create something different for lunch for toddlers and kids. i used cream cheese as the ‘glue’ to keep my rolls together but you can use mayo, pickles, mustard etc.
