DYSPRAXIA is a difficulty with thinking, planning and carrying out sensory/motor tasks.

Some children, despite adequate teaching, a stimulating environment and generally normal intellect, have difficulty with movement and specific aspects of learning.

There may also be an overlap with other conditions such as dyslexia, ADHD, and Asperger’s. However, while there are challenges, dyspraxia is also characterised by distinctive strengths in creativity, empathy and originality.

These abilities are of great value in life; Richard Branson, the very successful entrepreneur, Daniel Radcliff, the actor, and Florence Welch (Florence and the Machine) all have dyspraxia.

The Kilkenny Dyspraxia Support Group provides a forum for discussion, for parents and teens and also to arrange events and activities that inform, and support people with dyspraxia – and provide opportunities for people with dyspraxia to utilise their distinctive abilities in various activities.

Next event is on December 4, when Mary O’Connor, Senior Occupational Therapist, will outline the benefits for people with dyspraxia of engaging in occupational therapy (OT).

This will include the potential benefits for self-esteem and what to expect from an OT appointment or assessment. This talk will be followed by some suitably seasonal Christmas nibbles and chat. The venue will be the Teachers’ Centre, Seville Lodge, Callan Road, at 7.30pm.

Events planned for the New Year include a seminar which will focus on the use of assistive technology to support, the sometimes hidden, particular skillsets of people with dyspraxia.

This is on January 17, at the Teachers’ Centre, Callan Road, 7.30pm. Activities, including horse-riding and drama, are also planned.

In Castlecomer with Chubby Brennan

A blast from the past...

A wellie night cap: a bottle of Guinness and a chaser!

Week 3: The Wellie Plan. All serious competitors realise the importance of diet when preparing for an event. In the Powley Vale we feel likewise. Your body is after all a temple and should be respected as such.

A balanced diet is important with all the main food groups included, porridge, bacon and cabbage, semolina and Guinness are all essential to get yourself into peak physical condition. So let’s look at a range of options for each meal during the week.

Breakfast: Well, really there is no alternative here, porridge is yer only man. So Monday to Sunday pop on the porridge oats, some suggest soak over night, some use new fangled microwaveable oats but for me there is nothing better that a half a cup of oats, a pinch of salt and two cups of water. Bring to the boil and simmer for fi ve minutes each morning.

Add a spoon full of sugar and fresh milk. Some fancy people put fruit or honey or God forbid, both, into their porridge. A mug of milky warm tea and sure your set up for the day.

Dinner: Now some people call this meal lunch and have their dinner at tea time. I don’t know why. Dinners should have spuds, in skins, mashed, steamed or boiled, whatever way you like best but don’t forget the lump of butter.

Vegs can be carrots, turnips, cabbage or parsnips. Don’t mind these fancy nancy excuses for vegetables you hear of nowadays like broccoli or courgettes, stick with what you know. Meats can be bacon, liver, chops (pork or lamb) and on Sunday you can roast a chicken, a rib roast or a leg of lamb.

Tea: Acceptable teas include bread and jam, a poached or fried egg, a slice of Swiss roll, Calvita Cheese on bread. Warm milky tea.

Late night snack: Bottle of

Guinness and a whiskey chaser. So there you have it, the

Wellie Plan, and remember look yourself in the mirror every morning and tell yourself ‘I will be a Wellie Champion’.

Coming next week, mentalisation, prepare yourself mentally for the day, see the race, win the race, the Powley Vale motivational guru Dr Seamie will take you through the PV programme.

Wellie race sponsorship cards will be available on December 7.

THE Reporter has teamed up with local Weight Loss Expert, Grace Fields of Motivation Weight Management, Ormonde Street, to give you a weekly tip to help you get in shape for Christmas. Each week, Grace will provide us with a top tip to help us battle the bulge before the excesses of Christmas!

Today, Grace advises that you can eat out when you are losing weight. Her simple tips will help you not just to have a great night out but also to stick with your healthy eating plan.

Her fi rst piece of advice is to check out the menu in advance if possible. Most restaurants post their entire menu online so you can print it out and decide in advance what you are going to order.

When looking through the menu watch out for the high-fat foods such as creamy sauces, pan-fried in butter, au gratin (with a cheese sauce), anything breaded, battered or deep fried.

These extras just aren’t worth the extra calories. Lean meats such as chicken and turkey are

always great options and fi sh is always a winner - it’s good for the brain and for the waistline!

Another few tips to help you:

1. Order your main dish from the  starter menu. By choosing two reasonably-portioned dishes for your  fi rst two courses  then if you want to choose a dessert you can (or better still share the dessert!).

2. Order a side salad. The fi bre-rich veggies will  fi ll you up. Soup is really fi lling, so it’s  a great starter. Steer clear of cream-based ones.

3. Modify the menu. Restaurants will take your dietary needs into account so you’ll be a happy customer and return. Don’t hesitate to request anything on the menu to be prepared in a more diet-friendly way and for sauces or dressings to be served on the side.

4. Keep away from the bread

basket.  Bread is very tasty but addictive! Think of Christmas Day and you will be glad you made the healthy choice.

5. Ignore your mum’s advice and don’t clear your plate!    Most restaurant meals contain twice the amount of calories as the home-cooked version of the  same dish.  Think of this when you are in a restaurant and  are full.    Most restaurants nowadays are delighted to  wrap up your leftover food for you to take home so it’s not going to waste.

6. Mini meals are a must. It’s smart to eat smaller meals during the day when you’re planning to dine out. Just don’t eat too sparingly, though - you don’t want to be so famished by the evening that you over-eat.

If you need help with your weight loss and management, call Motivation on 056 -77-12635.  You can book in for an assessment.

Eat sensibly and enjoy your food

‘THE Good Room’, the latest book by economist David McWilliams is easily his most accessible.

The book was writ-ten as an antidote to the many jargon laden tomes that are already on the market. He uses a story about a preg-

nant woman to dra-matize his views of our present reces-sion and how we are dealing with it.

McWilliams, who helps organize the Kilkenomics festival, is always insightful and here thankfully, he avoids the strained

metaphors that littered his prose previously.

This clever book is a good Christ-mas read not just for dads but also mums because he attempts to make economics more feminine by using chick lit devices.

IT’S not Christmas without the main man and this year MacDonagh Junction Shopping Centre have decided to off er a free Santa.

He arrives by vintage car at 2pm this coming Saturday. It will be a day of fun with a DJ, Mrs Claus, elves, children’s entertainer and free face

painting from 1pm. Santa will be in his

cabin Thursday to Sunday from 1pm to 5pm. All children must be accompanied by an adult and present a receipt from a shop within MacDonagh Junction.

There is an option to get a professional photo and sleeve with Santa

for just €5. There are naughty or nice report cards available at the customer service desk on the mall.

It should be a great day out and will get everybody in the mood for the festivities. The grotto will be a magical place for children of all ages.

Lego Quest was a series of Lego workshops where artists Orla Bates worked with 90 children over three days to create a diverse array of creatures. These activities were hugely challenging and all involved had loads of fun.

The children, aged six to twelve years old, were guided through a process which involved them in exploring animals and insects and then challenged to invent and construct these new 3D Lego and

paper animals and other fi gures. The children’s ideas came to life

by connecting art paper with Lego bricks to make their 3D multimedia creations.

The work will also become the Arts Offi ce’s December window display. Also on Saturday is a one-day market which will involve a number of amazing artists, illustrators and makers.

THIS year’s Kilkenny Charity Santa Run will be held at 11am on De-cember 15.

Aim is to raise funds for Cois Nore Cancer Support Centre. Regis-tration is from 9am.Runners are asked to go along dressed as Santa and there will be a prize for the best costume.

They fi rmly believe that the correct and proper treatment comes

not only from the medi-cal intervention but also by the support and car-ing environment which they provide.

Services include mas-sage, counseling, acu-puncture, refl exology, nutritional advice and art therapy.

The centre is due to open on Walkin Street early next year.

BELFAST-based songwriter Rachel Austin is playing Kilkenny as part of a nationwide tour in support of her album ‘Age of Reason’. Austin, originally from Virginia in the US, has spent the last 10 years based in Northern Ireland.

She has spent the last fi ve years playing gigs around Ireland, the UK and Europe. Last year, Rachel worked on various music collaboration projects in Virginia and Belfast. After a chance meeting with Brian Beattie (Daniel Johnston, Okkervil River, Sahara Smith), Beattie invited Rachel to record at his studio, The Wonder Chamber in Austin, Texas.

Inspired by the challenge to raise the money, Rachel launched a crowd funding project – ‘Austin in Austin’.

Along with solo performances, Austin has opened for well–known international acts in venues as varied as local bookstores to the National Concert Hall in Dublin. Artists she has performed with include Duke Special, Devon Sproule, Hazel O’Connor, Eleanor McEvoy and Iain Archer.

Her debut album, ‘Hello, my uglies’ (2008) set out her stall with a beautiful collection of songs that drew from a variety of sources including indie and folk, right through to grungy jazz.

Rachel Austin plays Set Theatre supporting Declan O’Rourke on December 1.
