KINGS PRIORY SCHOOL NEWSLETTER kingsprioryschool.co.uk 14 JULY 2016

I t was seven months since I wrote to our School community via my first Newsletter. And here we are now at the

end of another Academic Year. Remarkable. Time really has flown. This is either because, genuinely, there is

never a dull moment in my role at Kings Priory School and there is no time to blink; or, it is because I am older

and allegedly time passes more quickly the older you get. That said, speaking with pupils, colleagues and families

over the past few days they also feel that time is passing at a million miles per hour. So when we break for the

holidays bear in mind that September will be here in a flash: I do hope everyone is able to spend quality time with

family and friends, and that you all recharge and look forward to the new term or new chapter if you are moving sites

or going onto university, for example. I would also encourage pupils and families to reflect on not only the

achievements of the past year, but also on anything you may wish to do a little better or change in the new year.

I wrote to parents yesterday to share with you four main things: the start of term arrangements across the whole

school; a ParentMail issue; a change of INSET date; and some information regarding Prior’s Park, our main playing

fields. The details of that letter are far greater than the scope of this Newsletter, but if you have not read it I would

encourage all parents to do so at their earliest convenience.

Our recent events have included a stunning performance by our Middle School in The Wizard of Oz. The amount of

work that went into the production was immense and it has really paid off for the pupils, staff and parents who were

either involved or had the pleasure of seeing it. I congratulate everyone who took part, whatever their role.

The Outdoor Education specialism of the School has been fully in action with the Gold Duke of Edinburgh Assessed

expedition in the Lake District last weekend and our Outlook Expedition leaving for Peru tomorrow morning. And yes,

I will be there at 2:30am on Friday morning to make sure everyone gets away safely and that hopefully no one leaves

any stuff behind. I wish them a safe and exciting adventure.

Our Summer Party on the Percy Park Road Site was a great success, just managing to dodge the rain earlier in the

day. It was not only a fun day for pupils, families and the community together, but also a lovely opportunity for me to

chat to such a large number of parents and pupils. Thank you to all of the PTA members, volunteers and staff who

made the afternoon such a success. These are really special events; anyone who wishes to be part of the PTA is

very welcome to contact the Chair, Mr Chris Smith, via the School.

Mill Volvo returned to school for a weekend of Top Gear car fun on our Huntington Place site. Once again, the Sixth

Form Café was open to all and luckily the weather stayed fine for a good event as part of the Mouth of the Tyne

Festival.

There have been a number of smaller trips and visits throughout the school over the past two weeks with Year 5 and

8 girls being part of the Tech Future Girls, Year 12 mathematicians visiting the Centre for Life and our Middle School

actors entertaining the general public in Northumberland Park and Mr Woods (Broadway).

There was success in the Key Stage 2 SATS with our Year 6 pupils gaining very positive results. We now eagerly

await the results for GCSEs and AS and A Levels in August.

It now remains for me to wish you all a very splendid summer.

Thank you for your continued support for our great school.

Best wishes

Final Day celebrations

Pupils from across Kings Priory School took part in a

number of celebrations today as we head towards the

end of the academic school year.

All pupils and staff from the Middle and Senior Schools

headed to St George’s Church in Cullercoats this

afternoon for an end of year service.

The service, which included accompaniment from the

Choristers and Senior School Choir, was a celebration

of the school year and what had been achieved.

We wish all pupils, parents, staff and friends of Kings

Priory School a very happy summer, and we look

forward to seeing you again in September.

Further Hotspur foodbank success

For the last few weeks, pupils in Hotspur Chapter have

been collecting for local charity The BAY Foodbank.

The BAY Foodbank, based in North Tyneside, aims to

provide emergency food provision to individuals or

families experiencing a financial crisis.

It has helped over 20,000 local people since it launched.

The decision to support the North Shields-based

support service came after a pupil vote at the beginning

of the year.

After a campaign was launched to find items in the

run-up to Christmas, the response from the rest of the

School was so phenomenal that they decided to do it

again this term.

As well as an array of vital food and other supplies, the

pupils also presented representatives of the charity with

a cheque for £385.01.

Well done Hotspur Chapter!

Change of INSET Days

We wish to advise parents that the INSET Day

scheduled for Friday 25 November 2016 has been

rescheduled.

This INSET Day will now take place on Wednesday 4

January 2017. School will re-open to pupils for the

Spring Term on Thursday 5 January 2017.

Updated details of Term Dates for 2016-17 are now

available on our website.

Literacy Chapter competition results

Over the last month pupils have been preparing hard for

the annual Literacy Chapter competition, with the main

focus being on Speaking and Listening.

This year pupils had to come up with an answer to this

statement “Modern technology is making us less

intelligent”.

Pupils were given devoted Chapter Time to produce a 5

minute presentation of their own choosing to argue their

viewpoints.

A range of ideas ensued from courtroom dramas,

PowerPoint presentations, role play and even a rap!

The standard of entries was incredibly high and

culminated with this year’s winners being chosen as

MD1 and SP4. A huge congratulations to the winning

teams and also to all who took part.

Out of School Club update

September 2016

All parents should now have had confirmation emails for

their selected sessions for the Out of School Club for

September. Where there are two or more siblings, there

was one email sent confirming their places.

Please do get in touch if you have submitted a form but

NOT had confirmation.

Goodbye

We say goodbye to Kerry this Summer; she has been

invaluable to us and will be hugely missed. We wish her

the very best for the future. They say home is where the

heart is, we hope that she will be very happy in her

move back home to Canada.

From September, Louise Tatum will take on the

temporary role of Deputy Manager

Thank you

Thank you so much for all the kind words, pictures,

cards and gifts that received over the few days - they are

all very much appreciated.

We are all so proud of the progress of the Out of School

Club this year and how well it has been received. We

are thrilled that the children have had fun along the way

too! We hope you all have a lovely Summer holiday.

Tech Future Girls visit Hewlett Packard

Tech Future Girls visited Hewlett Packard in the Cobalt

Business Park as part of the TechWeek initiative.

This was to allow students into local businesses to

experience what it is like to work in the STEM industry.

We started our afternoon by trialling some robotics and

learnt to program the Lego robot to do all sorts of things

from dancing to scoring goals.

We then had the opportunity to work on a Sprout which

showed the students how animations happened and

they worked on some famous Dreamworks animations

creating their own sequel to “How to Train your Dragon”

and “Penguins of Madagascar”.

To conclude our visit the girls sat in a board room and

met some of the leading creators at HPE. They

explained their work and showed how HPE has helped

several industries including Disney when they created

the photo wrist band. We had a great afternoon and

gained some valuable employment knowledge.

I t has been an incredibly fast-paced few weeks

which has led to our last week of School. As

always, this time of year is packed full of

excitement and some sadness at leaving a class or

teacher behind.

On Monday children were able to meet their new class

teacher and take part in their first activity in their new

class. Everyone, including the staff, was buzzing with

anticipation and were excited for the new year ahead.

Year 4 pupils completed their final transition activity on

Tuesday having a tour of the Huntington Place site and

a question and answer session with the new Middle

School Prefects. A massive thank you to all pupils and

staff from the Middle School for calming nerves and

making the Year 4 pupils feel so welcome.

Last week we saw a flurry of activity from all classes

during our Sports Week. It was a massive success and

this was due in large part to the organisation of Mr

Youldon, Mrs Spencer and Mrs Large as well all staff.

The pupils enjoyed various sporting activities including

rugby league, GoNoodle, tennis and many more. The

Year 3 and 4 Kwik Cricket competition at Prior’s Park

was unbelievable and the Key Stage Sports Days

highlighted the teamwork and sportsmanship of our

pupils. A massive congratulations go out to the 10

children who competed and won the North Tyneside

Quadside Athletics competition which was attended by

over 1000 children. Dylan Towndrow and Emily Bond

performed particularly well and scored most points for

boy and girl respectively.

A fond farewell to our Year 4 children who, in September,

will be taking their next step into Middle School. They

have shown incredible determination, maturity and

leadership throughout the year. They are an asset to our

school and I am certain that they will continue to succeed

with enthusiasm and good humour throughout their time

at Kings Priory School. I am incredibly proud of their

achievements and wish them the best!

Finally I, along with Mrs Thompson, Miss Robson and

Mrs Heide, want to thank everyone for their continued

support and kindness during our time at Kings Priory

School. It has been an honour and pleasure teaching the

extraordinary children we have in our School and we are

grateful for the staff who work incredibly hard to ensure

the pupils are happy, friendly and take pride in their

achievements.

I wish you all a good summer and hope everyone enjoys

next year.

Hotspur Behaviour Challenge winners

Hotspur were the winners of the Chapter Behaviour

Challenge in the First School for the second half of

the Summer Term.

They indulged in a delicious picnic outside on

Tuesday 12 July, including a chocolate cake.

Thanks must go to the catering staff for all their

support in this. Well done Hotspur!

First School Sports and Healthy Lifestyle Week

The First School held their Sports and Healthy Lifestyle

week from 4-8 July and participated in a number of

different activities.

The weather held off for most of the time, despite the

Reception and KS1 Sports Day having to be postponed

and the beach trip also cancelled due to the forecast of

heavy rain.

Year 3/4 started the week with a Kwik Cricket

competition on Prior’s Park. This entailed 6 matches of

continuous cricket and the ultimate winners being

Barfleur. One of the Barfleur groups even managed to

win all 6 games. Well Done!

The other main event of the week was Year 3/4 Sports

Day, again on Prior’s Park, where the children took part in

12 different events, earning points for their Chapter for

the more competitive activities, whilst also enjoying

sporting activities such as dodgeball, football and circuits. .

One of the highlights of the afternoon was the spirit in

which the children took part in the tug-of-war – which was

a ‘first’ for many! .

It was a tremendous afternoon, with fantastic support

from the Sixth Form Sports Leaders.

The winners overall were again Barfleur.

Champions crowned at Tyne and Wear games

Having recently won the North Tyneside Quadkids

Athletics competition at Year 4 level, 10 children went to

represent Kings Priory School and North Tyneside at the

Tyne and Wear games.

The event was attended by over 1000 children and

included an opening ceremony presented by an Olympic

athlete. The children have been working extremely hard

in preparation and it paid off with the School being

crowned County Champions by over 100 points.

We also had individual winners with Dylan Towndrow

gaining the most points by a boy in the county, and Emily

Bond gaining the most points by a girl; despite

competing a year young!

Rugby star drops in for a Q and A

Year 2 were visited by a former pupil Oliver Stedman.

Upon leaving the Sixth Form, Oliver went on to play

Rugby for England U20’s, Newcastle Falcons and now

plays for Yorkshire Carnegie.

The children asked some superb questions about his

career and how he made it to the top level, and then

were given the opportunities to get photographs and

autographs from the superstar.

Cricketers drop in for coaching session

Year 1 had a visit from two Durham County cricketers to

whom they asked questions before enjoying a coaching

session. Gavin Main, Scotland International, and South

African born Brydon Carse really enjoyed being asked

some interesting questions and commented on how

good the children were at catching.

Key Stage 1 Sports Day

Earlier this week was the KS1 Sports Day which was a

great success and even the rain held off, just!

The children had an exciting afternoon, participating in a

variety of sporting team challenges.

Thank you to parents for their support, teachers and the

Sports Leaders for all of their hard work and to the

children for such good behaviour.

Middle School update

MIDDLE SCHOOL

The new Year 8 prefects will take up their roles in

September and I am sure they will also be fantastic.

Having seen many of them already interacting with the

Year 4 pupils during transition I am 100% confident in

our new appointments – well done everyone:

• Douglas, Charlotte MD3 • Fay, George MP2

• Grove, Danielle MD3 • Jamison, Daisy MH2

• Johnston, Madeleine MB4 • King, Eleanor MB2

• Mercer, Daniel MB3 • Mockett, Eliza MD4

• Mutch, Harriet MH3 • Short, Anja MH2

• Smith, Rosie MD3 • Traore, Awa MB4

• Weatherburn, Olivia MD3 • Whiting, Emily MB4

• Wilson-Baker, Dominic MB5 • Winton, Malcolm MB5

At this point I would normally be saying I look forward to

seeing you in September, all refreshed after a lovely

holiday, but instead I will be taking a short break from

School as I leave for Maternity leave today.

I am very happy to say though that Mr Robertson

(Assistant Head of the Middle School) will be looking

after everyone in my absence for the Autumn Term. I

very much look forward to hearing all about our new

intake and further Middle School events when I return in

January.

Have a fabulous summer and I hope everyone enjoys

their well-earned rest.

Mrs Watson

T hey say ‘Time flies when you are having fun!’. I

cannot believe how quickly this year has gone

and how applicable this saying is to our 2015-16

in the Middle School. It has been a packed year of

events, exams, trips, learning and all round life

experiences. I am extremely proud of our pupils in Year

5 to 8 and everybody has achieved something towards

their goals in the last 12 months.

Having just sat in our final Achievement Assembly of the

year I am taken aback at the commitment and

determination shown by such a large number of the

young people at Kings Priory School.

The volume of nominations for Outstanding

Achievement, Thirst for Knowledge, Head of School

Awards and The Principal’s Commendations is

staggering. It just proves how much our pupils take pride

in their own progress and achievements.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank Mrs Piper

and the Year 8 prefect body for 2015-16. Under Mrs

Piper’s leadership you have all shown a great level of

maturity in the design and implementation of a support

network all the Middle School pupils have benefitted

from. You all deserve a big pat on the back.

We wish you all the best in your move into the Senior

School and hope you continue to grow into the wonderful

young adults you all have the potential to do so.

History of Tynemouth exhibition

Year 5 completed their Arts Award project with a small

exhibition.

They have worked very hard to research and present

ideas revolving around Tynemouth and its history.

The Arts Award was a chance to work collaboratively

with their peers to produce a small exhibit about an

aspect of Tynemouth. Choices ranged from the fire at

the Plaza to Collingwood’s Monument or how

Tynemouth fared in WWII.

Year 5 have done a splendid job, well done!

Taekwondo medal success

A great day for Kings Priory School in Coventry on

Saturday at a national Taekwondo competition.

Middle School pupil Lydia Bruce won a silver medal,

whilst Year 5 pupil James Wordsworth won a bronze

medal for his part in the competition.

First School pupil Alexavier Punay in Year 3 also

won an impressive two gold medals.

Well done everyone!

KPS Live @ Woods Broadway

Marking the start of a new collaboration with the

YStudio, KPS pupils took part in a live music night at

Woods Café on the Broadway on Tuesday Night.

Performers from Year 5 to Year 12 took to the mics to

play and sing music of all genres to a packed house.

It was all ages, all inclusive, all genres and summed up

our hope for the music department where we want all

pupils to know that they are ALL WELCOME! A fantastic

way to end the term.

Listen out for news of recording studio sessions that will

be available with the YStudio in the new academic year.

The Wizard wows in musical production When it was first announced that our summer show this

year was set to be The Wizard of Oz, we had absolutely

no idea how magnificent it would turn out to be.

Indeed, it happened to be such a success that it “blew

me off my broomstick” (Maddie Lumley, Year 6).

Whether it be a terrifying encounter with the Wicked

Witch of the West (Phoebe Ridley) or a beautiful

rendition of the timeless, Somewhere Over the Rainbow

from Dorothy (played by Ruby Bruce), every second was

not to be missed. But you want more, you cry! But be

warned, there’s a cyclone of amazement to come…

Over 100 people auditioned and they were all given a

part in the whole show. Many people were really

impressed with the result and there was even a special

competition to celebrate the amazing art being produced

by the cast. The final winner is yet to be decided but all of

them were fantastic.

As always, each scene was immaculate and the

production received a standing ovation from many

members of the audience.

But, it wasn’t just the pupils that put their time and effort

into the production. Mrs L Johnston, Mrs J Johnston, Mrs

S Johnson, Miss Fenwick, Miss Telford, Miss Harman, Mr

Swinton, Mr Mingham and Mr Hall - who did the lighting -

were just some of the adults who helped with the

production. We were also supported by Miss M Sice.

Everyone was really pleased with the commitment and

huge effort made by all the cast.

To add to that, the children who took part were only

between the ages of nine and thirteen and this was

commented on by people who saw the show and were

amazed at the ability and talent of the children involved.

To conclude, as members of the cast we are very proud

of our achievements and appreciate the opportunity to be

part of such a wonderful experience.

Senior School update

SENIOR SCHOOL

two-day programme has really brought the UCAS

process into sharp focus for our youngsters.

In September we will welcome our new Year 9s into

Senior School and onto their GCSE courses.

Most will transfer from our current Year 8 and will be on

familiar territory, but not all and it is crucial that our

external entrants are welcomed into the fold.

Likewise, our new Year 12s will be the first year group

to fully benefit from the new Sixth Form Centre and they

too will maintain the vast majority of pupils from our

current Year 11, whilst being enhanced by new students

from other schools.

It is a key aim to continue to develop our Sixth Formers

to be the best role-models they can be in all walks of

school life.

I look forward to seeing all pupils at the start of the

Autumn Term, (although I will see many of them for

exam results in August first!) when we will continue to

strive to make Kings Priory School, the absolute best

experience it can be for all our pupils.

I wish everyone a restful summer holiday.

Mr Nicholson

T he year has passed-by in the blink of an eye and

now on the final day of the term it is time to

reflect on all the events that have made the

Senior School come to life in 2015-16.

I am sure that all our pupils and their parents will have

their own memories from a huge range of aspects of

school life.

We have so many fabulous things to celebrate, from our

wonderful musicians who bring so much to the School

with their performances to the small unseen acts of

kindness carried out countless times by our pupils and

staff on a daily basis.

Included in this final newsletter are events that show our

School in a microcosm with hard-working staff prepared

to give pupils fantastic opportunities like at Sports Day

last week or to organise a trip to London for an

exhibition.

This week also saw our inaugural two-day UCAS

Conference for our Year 12s who benefitted from advice

and direction from both Newcastle University and

Durham University staff.

Add to that the range of ex-students and professionals

who delivered workshops on their degree area then the

Senior School Play set for November

The Senior School Play will be taking place on

Thursday 17 and Friday 18 November.

Auditions for interested students will be held in the first

two weeks of the Autumn Term.

If you are interested, please look out for more

information in September!

Similarly this was an excellent opportunity for the Year

10’s and 11’s of the group to begin thinking about

University, but most of all it offers endless inspiration for

both GCSE and A level ideas.

After a long day and dinner at Pizza Express spirits were

still high as we caught the train home. It was an inspiring

and thought provoking day, and we look forward to

returning next year!

London New Designers Trip

Last week Design Technology pupils caught an early

train to London along with Mr Gibbs and Miss Nicholls

in search for creative inspiration.

Arriving in London the group had a quick pit stop lunch

in the sunny grounds of Kensington Park before

heading to the Victoria and Albert Museum.

For the budding engineers and architects of the group

we were lucky enough to visit the Ove Arup exhibition,

getting an insight into his work and what inspired him as

a designer. As well as learning about the technical

methods used in historic architecture such as the

Sydney Opera House.

After the exhibition pupils were able to have a brief look

around the rest of the museum before catching a tube

to Islington for the New Designers Exhibition. As always

the show consisted of exceptional work in many

disciplines of design by university graduates this year.

With dozens of universities attending pupils were able

to discuss courses and university life; most stands

will have had to restock their prospectuses after

visits from our A level students.

Year 12 UCAS conference

Year 12 pupils took part in our first two-day UCAS

conference this week.

The first day was set around a host of information

gathering activities and seminars, including writing a

good application, student finance and finding the right

course.

On day two, pupils took to the computers and started to

complete their application ahead of the deadline in the

Autumn 2016 term.

A huge thank you to university staff, former pupils and

others who helped to make this event a success.

At the end of the Summer Term we sometimes feel the summer sports

are only just getting going and that there is still much of the season to go.

If pupils have enjoyed the activities they have done then we urge them to

go to clubs throughout the summer to help develop their skills.

Sports Days

In the past week we have had the School Sports Days from Reception to

Emily Large title success at European Junior

Swimming Championships

The last ten days have been amazing for Dunelm pupil

Emily Large, who represented Great Britain at the

European Junior Swimming Championships in Hungary.

Emily competed in three individual events, achieving the

title of European Champion in 200m butterfly alongside

breaking her own British record, after she controlled the

four laps of the Hódmezővásárhely pool to finish more

than a body length ahead of the rest of the field.

As well as taking the first British gold of the competition,

she also competed in two relays and gained two bronze

medals alongside her teammates.

Emily said: “The whole experience was phenomenal and

the atmosphere from the team was unbelievable.”

“The support and enthusiasm from all the swimmers was

fantastic, encouraging everyone to try their hardest and

most of all to enjoy it.”

Anyone can believe in their dreams, yet champions are

the ones that never give up on their dreams.

Well done Emily!
