WAKES WEEK SPECIAL

Because of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations and the extra Bank Holiday, Wakes Week has been moved back a week this year and will start on Sunday 10th June. On the Jubilee Bank

Holiday, Monday 4th June, KICA have organised a “Picnic in the Park” family event to be held on the village field starting at 2.20pm. Bring along a picnic

and the family and enjoy an afternoon of fun and games.

As usual Wakes Week will start with the outdoor service and marching band starting at the Barley Mow on Sunday

evening and will culminate with a Ceilidh in the marquee on Main Street the following Saturday evening. All the usual and a few new events will take place throughout the week, for details see the attached programmes. This year the Engineering Challenge is being sponsored by JCB and the theme for the floats is the “Olympics” again for details see the attached information sheets. Tickets and event entry forms (where required) can be obtained in the village shop.

Parish Council Chairman’s

Annual Report This year has been relatively quiet. We have

had no major issues to discuss and decide on. Planning has been a main topic at several meetings. We have listened to members of the public sympathetically before taking decisions. The telephone box which took a long time in discussions came to a satisfactory conclusion. The open space and village field have been well maintained and the issue of the school mast is in abeyance. The pavements have been resurfaced where needed but roads and potholes could have been better attended to. As we have had very few members of the public at our meetings I feel we have carried out our duties successfully. I would have liked to see our District Counsellor at more than one of our meetings. I would like to thank my fellow Counsellors for the time and work put in this year and look forward to the coming year.

Please be aware that we are re-organising the notice board in the shop and removing old notices and setting a time limit of a month on new notices. We find that we are always running out of space for new advertisers and are not always sure some of the adverts are still current. So from June 1st we will be starting the noticeboard from scratch - please let us know if you would like us to leave your ad up for the month of June otherwise we will remove it to free up space. We are not planning on charging anything for new notices.

Look out for new additions in the shop as we plan a new and improved layout!

Book Inn The next Book Inn will meet on Wednesday 20

June at 8:30 in the Barley Mow to discuss The Sense of an Ending by Julian Barnes. All welcome.

The Kirk Ireton Educational Trust Grants for those under 21: The Kirk Ireton

Educational Trust was formed by the amalgamation of several old, small, educational charities in Kirk Ireton and each year the Trustees can distribute quite small sums to those under 21 living in the Parish of Kirk Ireton on a discretionary basis.

It is an educational trust, so applications must fall within the very broad spectrum of ‘education’. The Trustees have decided that applications which fall within the remit and curriculum of school or university are not normally considered, so they are

looking to support activities, hobbies, or initiatives that are extra-curricular, and which could be said to broaden or extend the idea of education for young people.

Application forms can be obtained from any of the Trustees or from school. Closing date for receipt of applications is Saturday 30th June 2012

A Grant for someone over 21 to help teenagers: The School House Trust is larger than the Educational Trust and on an on-going basis is able to support various activities at school, such as the Pantomime trip, and it helps different groups and clubs that meet in the Village Hall.

The Trustees would like to provide funding to do something for the teenagers of the Parish.

It could be The Arts, or Sport, or something like the Scouts. If any adult thinks that they would like to start up something like this and needs the cash to buy (say) equipment, or pay for professional coaching, or insurance, or transport, or Village Hall hire, etc., then please contact any of the Trustees with your ideas, again before 30th June.

Trustees to both schemes are: Mr Jeremy Butt

(Chairman) 370495, Mr Martin Tomlinson (Secretary) 370533, Mrs Kath Stevens 01629 822722, Mrs Cynthia Kirk 370421

the school to join in the Tea Party after the Park Event at 1.45pm. Contact me on 372154 for details.

Park Event There will be a small lottery/jubilee event in the

park on Friday, June 1st from 10.30 till 11.30. All the school children are attending and all other

children are invited. This will be followed by a picnic lunch in the school for all children. If anyone would like to bring cakes they would be greatly

appreciated. Although the event is aimed at the children everyone in the village is invited. If anyone has any further thoughts or ideas for the party they can contact me on [email protected] or 372787.

There will be no Zumba during Wakes Week so the class that would have been on Thursday 14th I have put off. As you will see in the diary all the other classes will go ahead as normal. If you would like to know more about Zumba why not come along to one of the classes.

My Tip Of The Month Is docx driving you mad? Quite a few people in the village have complained to me that they receive docx files attached to their e-mails and can’t open or display them. Docx was introduced by Microsoft in 2007 and is the document file format used by MS Office in version 2007, 2010 and 2012. If you are using earlier versions of Office, or don’t have Office installed on your computer you won’t be able to open these files for reading or editing. There is a simple solution to overcome this problem; for early versions of Office (2000, XP, 2003) you can download and install the Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack using the following link: “www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=3”. The webpage gives full step-by-step instructions as to how to install the update. If you don’t use MS Office but would like to view Office files there is a free file viewing programme that you can download from the following website:

www.freefileviewer.com/. This program allows you to open and display a whole host of file types and can be very useful.

If you would like more information regarding installing these upgrades or other computer issues call me on 370797 or e-mail:

[email protected].

Stuart’s An Ironman For Charity It is perfectly obvious to anyone who has ever seen me; that I am not exactly a natural athlete. Despite this; I have decided to do the Ironman UK race this year (Not sure why I've chosen Bolton instead of Hawaii). I am not allowing the fact that I have never run a marathon before, dampen my enthusiasm for running one after a 2.4 mile swim and 112 mile cycle! I would like to raise money for the SANDS charity (Stillbirth and Neonatal Death) when I do this and would be very grateful if you could sponsor me using the following link;

http://www.justgiving.com/Stuart-Gold0 I will let you know how I get on and the amount I raise. Many thanks.

“These boys have never really grown into men”

Contributed by John Lawton These boys have never really grown into men, despite their disguises, despite their adult ways, their sophistication, the camouflage of their kindly smiles. They are still up to their old tricks, still at the wing-plucking stage. Only now their prey answers to

women's names. And the girls, likewise, despite their disguises, despite their adult ways, their camouflage of need, still twist love till its failure seems not of their making; something grotesque migrates hourly between our different needs, and is in us all like a poison. How strange I've not understood so clearly before how liars and misers, the cruel and the arrogant lie down and make love like all others, how nothing is ever as expected, nothing is ever as stated. Behind doors and windows nothing is ever as wanted. The good have no monopoly on love. All drink from it. All wear its absence like a shroud. Brian Patten

Bev’s Walk & Farmhouse Tea I would like to thank everybody who took part in my walk to raise funds for the Church. We raised

over £250 which will be much appreciated. Over twenty-five people and lots of dogs took part in the walk and we were joined at the farm by the non-walkers for a farmhouse tea. Thanks also to those who helped by providing cakes and sandwiches.

… Kirk Ireton Church & Chapel News ... A message from Sister Merle Wilde

THE QUEEN'S DIAMOND JUBILEE. The people of Kirk Ireton excel when they are challenged with providing for a memorable occasion. I am sure that The Queen's Diamond Jubilee will confirm this belief and be remembered as truly appropriate and joyful. The Queen's Jubilee celebrates the 60 years of Her Majesty's reign. She is the head of state of the UK and 15 Commonwealth realms. The Queen came to the Throne in February 1952. I remember the photographs of the young princess and her sister, Princess Margaret, with the corgi dogs which were part of the family. The girls became members of the Girl Guides. During the second World War the young Princess served with the ATS. When the Armistice treaty was signed and the war ceased we enjoyed a wonderful celebration as the country celebrated the Peace. Food was rationed and very scarce. The atmosphere was one of relief from the anxiety of war and a people determined to give the children of our nation a sense of newly found joy and peace. The young Princess Elizabeth was engaging in public duties. She addressed the nation underlining her intention of serving with loyalty and dedication. At the time it seemed a difficult promise, nevertheless she has never swerved from that intention. The marriage of Elizabeth to Lieutenant Phillip Mountbatten brought a freshness to the Monarchy. Inevitably their family life is subject to constant scrutiny. Through the years Queen Elizabeth and her husband have suffered the pains and loss experienced by

families throughout their dominions. They have taken their duties with grace, humour and understanding to the great benefit of the peoples. Amidst the jubilee rejoicing we pray that they will have peace and deep joy as they travel amongst their people. I pray that each one of us will have time to taste that true delight and be blessed. With love, Sister Merle.
