Aktion
Club
rocks on
Our club is proud to enter another year featuring our Aktion Club, which consists of developmentally disabled adults that attend the STARS facility (Scottsdale Training and Rehabilitation Services).
Started three years ago by Charlie Fox, Mike Scharnow and Jon Geller, the main club advisor is Rick Hopwood, a STARS employ-ee and member of the Noon Kiwanis Club.
Did you know that Aktion Club is Kiwanis Interna-tional’s fastest growing Ser-vice Leadership Program. It’s the only service club for adults with disabilities. Ak-tion Clubs have reached more than 12,000 members throughout 14 nations. Mem-bers provided about 185,000 service hours in their com-munities.
Our STARS Aktion Club meets the first and third Tuesday of each month, ei-ther running a meeting or participating in a service project. They provide assis-tance to Ronald McDonald House, Feed My Starving Children and others.
Noon Kiwanians are invit-ed to help with the club, ei-ther by attending a meeting or helping with a service project. Aktion Club mem-bers always help us with our food booth at the arts festi-vals. Our club is performing a great service by offering this Aktion Club.

A festive and fun Breakfast with Santa Editor’s Note: The following
is a thank you note from Donna
Yordy, who coordinated this
year’s Breakfast with Santa
event. A big thanks from our club
to Donna for being just a creative
genius and serving the children
of the world!
Kiwanis is about serving the
children of the world, and
Breakfast with Santa is truly a
way that we serve the young
ones in our community.
I want to thank each of you
who worked the breakfast and
helped make it a successful
event. The job each of you did
played an important part in the
success of the breakfast. It al-
ways takes teamwork to make
this event run smoothly.
Mike at the Community Cen-
ter told me after the breakfast
that people commented as they
were leaving how much they
enjoyed themselves. That is the
highest compliment that our
Kiwanis club can receive.
My sincere thanks goes to the
following people who helped
with the breakfast:

Happy New Year!
Fellow Kiwanians:
It is 2017, believe it or not. It is a New Year. It is a brand new opportunity for Noon Kiwanis members and
friends to make a positive difference in the lives of the children of the world. Think of what lies ahead.
As I mentioned last month, we have the exciting prospect of a new Club Satellite forming through the coor-
dinated efforts of our club and the Sunset club. This means that we have the prospect of inviting people who
aren’t able to join us at lunch on Thursdays to join our club and create their own Kiwanis experience. It could
mean a whole new generation of Kiwanians, which is something Kiwanis International is strongly encourag-
ing.
Another positive difference we can make in the lives of the children of the world is through our Haiti hunger
relief effort. Later this month, Roger Bates and I will be joining Jack Reynolds from Free the Kids on a trip to
Haiti to visit the school where 350 malnourished children are about to start receiving a daily nutritious meal
for the first time in their lives. We already have more than enough money in hand to feed these children
through the month of July. I’d say that is making a positive difference in the lives of children, wouldn’t you?
But a New Year also gives us a brand new opportunity to welcome new members to join our efforts to serve
the children of the world. We can always use more people serving at our side in all the various ways we serve
children and organizations that make a positive difference in the lives of kids. We are an active club and we
can always use new members to join our Kiwanis team. So please invite a friend to come as your guest to one
of our luncheons over the next several months so that we can multiply our efforts by adding to our terrific
team. Blessings to each of you!
A WORD FROM PRESIDENT KEN BROWN
Happy new year!

A report about our K-Kids and Builders By Marcia Hoenle, advisor
The K-Kids and Builders have had a very busy and successful first semester. Numerous projects have been initiated to support
the community. The kids made wreaths to decorate the doors of residents at Fountain Hills Village. The Kiwanis tree at the Com-
munity Center sparkled with the new decorations made by the kids. K-Kids and Builders led a school-wide drive to collect hy-
giene items for the homeless resulting in three full bags being donated to the Circle the City initiative. The kids made gifts of
layered chocolate chip cookie ingredients for their families.
Most of all, the K-Kids and Builders enjoy working events with the Noon Kiwanis Club members. The kids have helped with
Halloween in the Hills, Fall Art Festival and Breakfast With Santa. They are looking forward to helping with the Cycling, Safety
and Skills Rodeo January 28, 2017 and all the other fun events coming up.
K-Kids and Builders give a big shout out to all the Kiwanis Club members who have so
generously given their time and talents to assist the kids in their activities. Thank you
to Ken Brown, Joyce Stehlik , Bernie Hoenle, Matt Jefferson, Susan Williams, and Liz
Fichera.
We meet the first and third Wednesday of the month in the Fountain Hills Middle
School Cafeteria:

this event and was a tremendous help. Al Roselieb
took care of PayPal on the website for us and Bud
Fuls for always being there with the checks and
needed information. A special thank you also Mar-
cia and the Builders.
All of you provided a wonderful experience for
those who attended the breakfast. The smiles and
Kiwanis moments you received should make you
feel good about what we do as a club. Please know
that each of you are appreciated! A huge thank you
to everyone!

Some cute members of our Builders Club all ready to entertain the crowd.
This proved to be her first Christmas, but hopefully she will be back next
year to fully appreciate all aspects of the Noon Kiwanis Santa event.
Kids were mesmerized throughout the
morning with magic tricks, balloon
animals, temporary tattoos, Christmas
caroling and a whole lot more. This
was the 13th annual year the club has
offered this event at the Community
Center. A big thanks to the town for co-
sponsoring the event.

Welcome Monique! Monique Reynolds is the newest member of the Noon Kiwanis Club. She
was introduced to club members in early December just prior to attend-
ing the high school chorus performance. Club President Ken Brown con-
tinues to recruit new members and urges all members to invite prospec-
tive members to service projects and club meetings. As they meet our
members and get to know what we do and what we we’re about, how
could they resist not joining our club? #kidsneedkiwanis
Kiwanis Across the Border
A contingent from our club is expected to travel to
Nogales, Mexico on Saturday, Jan. 14, to participate
in an annual event in conjunction with the Santa Cruz
Kiwanis Club in Nogales, Ariz.
Many members may not realize that the ongoing
collection of aluminum kans helps fund this annual
international project. Funds are donated by our
Fountain Hills club to the Nogales club to pay for
gifts and clothes given out to the needy in Nogales,
Mexico. An annual festival is held for children cen-
tered around Three Kings Day in Mexico.
Paul “Kan Man” Appeldorn reports that in early
December a total of $266.61 was presented to Al
Roselieb, who chairs the “border” project, on behalf
of the kan kollection. It must be noted that one cent
came from the Adopt A Street anti-litter program. Al
contributed an additional $33.39 of his own money to
round out the donation to $300. That money will be
given to Pepe Wise of Nogales on Jan. 14. The club
also donated $500 to the border program to help
needy children in Mexico.
Anyone interested in this worthwhile outreach pro-
gram and trip should contact Al for more info.
