WHAT IS DIFFERENT?

International Lift EXPO Korea 2014, which has been elevated to the level of an international event, is being held on the first floor of COEX in Samsung-dong, Seoul for four days from Oct. 28 to Oct. 31. The EXPO is hosted by the Ministry of Security and Public Administration and is jointly run by the Korea Elevator Safety Institute (KESI) and COEX, a global leader in the exhibition business. KESI plans to make the exposition unique by ensuring there are plenty of visual attractions and lively cultural activities. To this end, KESI is aiming to capture the attention of visitors by setting up a culture gallery inside the exhibition hall. The culture gallery will showcase a variety of cultural contents, including a calligraphy show, and will feature live performances and a series of lectures from experts in the lift industry. The first exposition, which was held in 2010, was focused on public safety and the development of the lift industry. With these goals, KESI hosted an exhibition of lift products and offered a lecture series, inviting international experts on lifts and holding international elevator conferences, a remarkable achievement. A total of 10,750 people visited the exposition, which was participated in by 8 lift manufacturers including Otis, Thyssen Krupp, Mitsubishi, Schindler, Torin Drive, Steppe and Kangri. Bolstered partly by the success of the first show, the second exposition held in 2012 was participated in by 78 lift manufacturers hailing from Korea and a number of other countries, including Interlift from Germany and SJEC from China. The expo drew over 21,000 visitors, a significant increase compared to the first show. KESI concluded that International Lift EXPO Korea, despite being held just two times over a period of four years, has substantially helped local lift manufacturers to elevate their capabilities to an international level. Potential sales deals discussed with buyers amounted to just over KRW 1.4 billion in the first exposition, but by the second exposition this had grown by over 1,000% to KRW 18.3 billion. The number of sales talks has also doubled, from 500 to 1,032, while the number of participating countries has also seen a twofold increase from 8 to 16. KESI established the organizing committee in early April, well before the opening of the exposition. The organizing committee is made up of various associations and organizations as well as representatives of companies that lead the country’s lift industry, who will join forces in a bid to make the exposition a successful event. The organizing committee will be chaired by Kong Chang Seug, president of the Korea Elevator Safety Institute, while six honorary high commissioners including Kim Seung Ho, head director of the Korea Elevator Industry Cooperative and Kim Woon Young, presi-dent of Korea Elevator Association, will be participating in the committee as well. In addition, Hwang Young Cho, Olympic gold medalist in the marathon at the Barcelona Summer Olympics and Jeong Jae Eun, another Olympic gold medalist in Taekwondo at the Sydney Summer Olympics, will be joining the exposition as goodwill ambassadors, helping the organizing committee to promote the show as an international exposition. As the host organization, KESI will hold a calligraphy exhibition and lectures by celebrity poets jointly with the Korea Poet Association, in a bid to elevate the quality of visual attractions and cultural contents within the venue. The organizing committee will also strive to attract global companies to the exhibition with the aim of developing an international caliber show.“The expo this year is on the cusp of becoming an international event, both in name and in contents,” said Choi Il Seop, assistant chairman of International Lift EXPO Korea, adding “I will do all I can to make the exposition a successful event.”

Interview with Kong Chang-seugChairperson of the Organizing Committee of International Lift EXPO Korea 2014

On April 17 at 11:00 AM, a ceremony was held at room 327 in COEX, Samseong-dong, Seoul to inaugurate the organizing committee of International Lift EXPO Korea 2014, which has been officially approved as an international expo by The Global Association of the Exhibition Industry (UFI). The event was

attended by more than 100 key figures, including Head of the Disaster Security Bureau under the Ministry of Security and Public Administration (MOSPA) Lee Jae-yul, representatives public agencies such as Korea Elevator Safety Institute (KESI), heads of lift related associations and groups, representatives of academic organizations and representatives of corporations, who together adopted a resolution for the successful hosting of the expo.

The organizing committee of International Lift EXPO Korea 2014 will be chaired by KESI President Kong Chang-seug. Honorary chairpersons who will strive to lead the growth of the expo include the CEO of Korea’s largest elevator company Hyundai Elevator, Han Sang-ho; Thyssenkrupp Elevator

CEO Park Yang-choon, KEIC President Kim Seung-ho; Korea Elevator Service Co-Operative President Choi Gang-jin and Korea Elevator Association Chairperson Kim Yoon-young. The honorary chairperson for the overseas area will be Pacific Asia Lift and Escalator Association (PALEA) President

Ian Todkill, and the corporate advisory group heads will be Elevator & Escalator Installation Works Council Chairperson Shin Jong-man and Korea Elevator Maintenance Association Chairperson Seo Gil-soo.

To strengthen the promotion of the expo KESI also appointed three goodwill ambassadors: 1992 Barcelona Olympics marathon gold medalist Hwang Young-jo, 1984 LA Olympics wrestling gold medalist Kim Won-gi, and 2000 Sydney Olympics taekwondo gold medalist Jeong Jae-

eun. These goodwill ambassadors will engage in a range of international activities to promote International Lift EXPO Korea 2014, and attract more visitors. The deadline for companies to apply to participate in the expo is September 30, 2014. KESI will provide a discount on the entry fee of up to 20% to companies with new technology recognized by authorized agencies, as well as to companies that

have already participated in the expo 2 consecutive times. For more details, you can visit the expo homepage (www.liftexpo.co.kr).

“We listened to the opinions of the representatives of various Korean elevator companies. Many were asking us to focus on industrial development rather than safety. We decided to reflect this shift in the industry, and focus on the promotion of the industry, with safety just

being one component. This is why we removed the word “Safety” from the name, and changed the official name to “International Lift EXPO Korea.” In this sense, this year’s expo is a chance to reach an international level.“

“I think International Lift EXPO Korea is an exhibition that is truly representative of the Korean elevator industry. Unlike other in-dustries, which have multiple expos, International Lift EXPO Korea is the only expo for the Korean elevator industry. This is one of the reasons why we feel a tremendous sense of responsibility. As the chairperson of the organizing committee of the expo, my

primary goal is to make sure the expo is one that can interest people. The growth of an industry requires the interest of many people. Without such interest, we cannot expect the industry to have a bright future. It might be possible to achieve short-

term growth without it, but what ultimately matters is the interest of the public. To attract a higher level of interest, we will plan a variety of events that will catch people’s eyes, and entertain them once they are at the expo.”

“The period of the expo, which starts on October 28, is really the ideal season to visit Korea. With the streets covered with autumn leaves in their different colors, people can enjoy a great environment for activities, with temperatures around 20℃. Foreign buyers will have great opportunities to learn about the Korean elevator system, inspection

criteria, certification system and the state of the industry, which will be a great learning experience.”

Chairperson Kong Chang-Seug:

Key to success is attracting attendance of foreign elevator companies and public interest

Korea built a Total Elevator Information System in 2011 and has operated it since then to ensure elevator safety and industrial development. The Total Elevator Information System is a system that allocates a unique number to each elevator and attaches a label with a QR code. It also collects and analyzes information to create valuable information so that relevant users can utilize the information at the right time. Elevators in Korea have been managed through the information system since 1995. In connection with inspection agencies, municipalities and rescue agencies, all the processes of elevators from installation to management and disposal are managed based on the Total Elevator Information System. So why did Korea choose to manage elevators through a national system? You can get the answer easily when comparing eleva-tors with cars. When a car breaks down or has an accident, the driver usually gets hurt. But when an elevator accident occurs, however, many unspecified users are damaged by the accident.Elevators are the property of an individual but also a public facility used by the people. For this reason, it requires government con-trol and proper policies. Korea built the Total Elevator Information System, which is able to collect all the information on elevators and has provided proper information to the people, with the elevator user acting as a watchdog. The national Total Elevator Infor-mation System is playing a crucial role, allowing the people to use elevators safely and soundly by providing necessary information to all elevator-related entities including elevator makers, installation companies, maintenance companies and inspection agencies.Once an elevator is installed in Korea, it is given a unique number so that users can identify unauthorized elevators, and location information for each allocated number is managed. In addition, the government is also sharing necessary information with related organizations such as rescue agencies and municipalities by linking the system with them.Korea built the Total Elevator Information System and has run it since then to ensure elevator safety and industrial development. The main functions of the national Total Elevator Information System are as follows:

When an elevator accident occurs, the company that installed it will wonder whether the accident is attributed to a defect of the product itself, a problem in the process of installation, or inappropriate maintenance. In addition, the inspection agency or maintenance provider pursues a more efficient and accurate inspection method. If you can conduct inspection by utilizing data obtained through inspection for a year, you can focus more on the identified weak-nesses of the elevator during inspection, and the history of data obtained from precision inspection will also enable more efficient inspection.Elevator users can see whether or not the elevators they use every day are approved ones and are well maintained, and they can also report any dangerous situations such as elevator malfunction immediately. Korea has location information for each elevator and thus when an elevator accident occurs, a rescue agency can carry out a rescue mission quickly since it can locate the elevator by its unique number. In addition, if users who are locked inside an elevator inform the rescue agency of the elevator number, the agency can locate the building and the elevator in the building through the linked system so that it can carry out its rescue mission quickly. When an accident occurs, the total information system ana-lyzes collected data and selects elevators with the possibil-ity of similar accidents and sends a warning to the mobile phone of each elevator manager. You can also check how many elevators have problems and how much damage from such accidents occurs through the Total Elevator Information System. The Total Elevator Information System analyzes all the col-lected information and enables the findings to be reflected to policies for prevention of future problems and accidents. An elevator powerhouse may not be a country that has many elevators but manages elevators systematically to prevent elevator accidents and allows users to use elevators safely.

Automobile, smartphone and home electronic appliances are some of the representative items of Korea widely known in the world. These items could become world-famous as they are superior in various terms including function, economy and quality, but it should also be noted that their design is world-class as well. As the technology and quality of most products have been improved and standardized in the process of industrialization, it is now difficult to dif-ferentiate the value of specific products only by superiority in basic commercial values. More recently, therefore, companies tend to regard design as more im-portant than ever because it is part and parcel of emotional appeal exerting a crucial influence on customers when they decide which product to purchase. Like other industries, in the early elevator industry, design or other convenient functions were hardly considered in the making of elevators. Until the 1980s, elevators had existed only as mechanical equipment that pursues more func-tion and safety technology as a vertical transportation means represented by “faster, safer elevators”. For this reason, the interior of an elevator was literally a metal box made of stainless steel or coated steel plate to make the elevator a strong, safe means of transportation. Then with the development of metal surface processing techniques, including STS Etching, Hairline, Vibration, Bead-blast, Titanium Color Plating and UV-high Glossy, these techniques began to be applied to the interior of elevators, bringing colors and patterns into the eleva-tor. At present, with the development of new, lightweight materials through

Characteristics of elevator design in Korea

which you can express the feeling of the raw materials as well as most construction materials, there is almost no limit in expressing elevator design, and accordingly a variety of designs are being applied to elevators. The Korea’s new elevator market is the world’s third largest following China and India, and is the world’s top-level domestic elevator market with a total of 500,000 elevators installed in the nation and the ratio of one elevator per 100 persons. This is because Korea has seen a sharp increase in the number of elevators with the rapid dissemination of high-rise buildings and apartments in the process of industrialization due to its geographical and social conditions featuring limited flatlands vs the entire terriotry and high population density. The quantitative growth of the building industry has been accompanied by qualitative growth in the process of premiumization of buildings pursuing originality and quality. The elevator, which is a core facility of high-rise buildings, has been reinterpreted as one of the elements of architectural design and space rather than simply a means of transportation. It gradually became a trend to design the interior of elevators in high-end buildings, such as landmarks, hotels and complexes, consistent with the design of the building. Accordingly, materials used in the building design be-gan to be applied to the interior of the elevator, which has led the progress of the elevator design along with the building design.Korea has a unique residential culture where more than 60% of the people live in apartments; Korea is dubbed as “Apartment Republic”. This unique residential culture has brought quantita-tive and qualitative development in apartments, and the apartment culture has evolved with the reflection of life characteristics of the Korean people. Unlike many European countries, such as

system that enables the recycling of the elevator cage and door frame, eco-friendly interior finish materials with easy recycling and low environmental contamination, and lightweight structures are main examples of eco-friendly design applied to elevators. Eco-friendly design ultimately includes the ideal value of sustainable design to live in harmony with nature, and this value is actually applied to elevators in the process of materializing it.In this way, a variety of design elements are being applied to the design of elevators by reflecting the distinct characteristics of the Korean market and the unique phenomena of Korean society. If an elevator is researched and developed reflecting the unique characteris-tics of the market based on a deep understanding of the causes of the social phenomena in various viewpoints as in the development of other products, it will have unlimited possibility and evolve beyond a simple elevator.

France, where apartments are a type of residency for low-income citizens, Korean apartments, especially in urban centers, are the symbol of modernization and indicate wealth and prove the residents’ status as wealthy or middle-class. With such social recognition of apartments as well as the government’s rapid urban development policy, major Korean construction companies have focused on apartments and commercialized apartments, creating many apartment brands. In the process of commercialization, the constructors brought numerous commercial elements to differ-entiate their apartment brands, and finally they began to apply such elements even to the design of elevators. The keywords of the trend of elevator design applied to apartments are safety and convenience. For apartments, two basic residential functions, rest and stability are very important. So the eleva-tors of apartments pursue neat and convenient spatial design rather than fanciness of design. Such elevator design aims to give residents the impression of a convenient apartment that is good to live in by utilizing finish materials and bright lighting that can create a clean and fresh image. In fact, the interior of an elevator could be a place with a high crime rate as it is a visually closed space. As part of environmental design efforts for crime prevention, safe design is also pursued through glass interior for wider CCTV view and security handrail as well as CCTV. This can be regarded as a humanistic effort to resolve social problems through design. The well-being trend has lasted for a long time, especially in Korea, and this has affected eleva-tors. One of the main items affected by the trend is an air cleaner for the elevator. It is an air clean-ing system optimized for elevators to purify polluted air in a closed elevator environment. For this reason, when elevator makers offer an elevator design package for each construction company, they also offer an air cleaner for the elevators as an option. In addition, on-demand custom ceil-ings that feature a built-in air cleaner and lighting have been developed and disseminated. With the rise of global environmental issues such as global warming, there is increasing demand for eco-friendly design through which environmental protection can be put into practice in indus-trial terms to protect the natural ecosystem through saving resources and energy. The interior

Korea’s elevator certification system was introduced on July 1, 1992, when the elevator parts type approval program was introduced according to the Act on Manufacture and Management of Elevators. The type approval program at that time was applied to 27 parts, and then in February 1999, it was abolished according to the Regulatory Reform Guide (Act No. 5779, Feb. 5, 1999).Then with the increasing frequency of elevator accidents and the rising necessity of certification of major safety parts, the elevator parts approval program was resumed, this time for five parts, in July 2005. At that time, Korea Testing Laboratory (KTL) was designated as the only elevator certification agency in the nation, and since then, has carried out its elevator parts certification and elevator model certification business. The domestic elevator certification is supervised by the Korean Agency for Technology and Standards (KATS) under the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy. KATS’ roles include establishing and amending relevant elevator laws, designating and supervising certification agencies and establishing and amending certification standards. And KTL, the certification agency, conducts the factory examination of elevators and elevator parts, product testing and the issuance of certificates, according to the certification standards.

Certification items and standardsAs shown in <Table 2> below, there are 14 elevator part items for mandatory certification and six items for voluntary model certification in Korea. Korea’s standards for elevator certification are based on Europe’s EN81-1, EN81-2 and EN115, and Anti Reversal Device (ARD) for escalators was designated as an item for certification only in Korea. On the contrary, a door-opened traveling prevention system is not included in the list of items for certification and is expected to be included later.

Certification application and proceedingIn general, a foreign elevator maker receives elevator certification through a domestic representative in Korea. The designated repre-sentative must submit documents to prove his or her status as a representative, and is responsible for doing certification business by proxy for the foreign applicant. The applicant must submit not only the application form but also technical documents such as the product manual and drawings and the documents on the status of the possession of manufacturing and testing facilities. For a model elevator, product installation manual is additionally required. After receipt of application, it will take about 90 days to complete design examination, factory examination and product testing, and this period may be increased depending on the circumstances. The certification examiner extracts the sample at random in factory examination, and conducts product testing at the test lab of Korea Testing Laboratory. The applicant can be present at the testing, and in the case of safety gear, the applicant must conduct technical support and adjustment for testing.

Korean laws related to elevator certification and the certification categorizationThe following <Table 1> shows the Korean laws related to elevator certification and the certification categorization. Certification of elevator safety parts is largely divided into parts that are subject to safety certification and parts for self-safety management. For elevator parts subject to safety certification, the certification agency issues a certificate only when the product passes its factory examination and product testing, and also conducts a biannual follow-up examination as well. On the contrary, for elevator parts for self-safety management, the certification agency conducts only product testing and executes a follow-up examination every five years. The elevator model certification is a voluntary certification program conducted upon customer request. The certification agency conducts design examination, product testing and factory examination, and issues a certificate if the elevator passes those examinations. A follow-up examination is conducted every two years. While Europe conducts elevator certification procedures using seven modules, Korea conducts certification procedures with product testing, factory examination (B-D modules) or product testing and self-safety declaration (B-F modules).

“The elevator has changed from a simple vertical means of transportation to a healing space where residents can communicate with each other.”Korea Elevator Safety Institute (KESI, President Kong Chang-seug) successfully carried out the Happy Elevator Pilot Project for socially disadvantaged classes in cooperation with Korea Housing Management (President Lee Bong-hyeong).This project aims to dramatically improve the elevator environment for socially disadvantaged classes. This also seeks to contribute to creating a correct and advanced elevator use culture through a culture and manners campaign and safety education.

Improving elevator environments in socially disadvantaged areaKESI’s Happy Elevator project was conducted at permanent rental apartments as a pilot project. In this project, the elevator wall design and the lights have been made brighter, and elevator environment improvement has been made, including the installation of an emergency call device. In addition to the improvement of elevator environment of permanent rental apartments, KESI also conducted the culture and etiquette campaign including greeting campaign and promotional video watching, changing the elevator to a happy cultural space where residents can communicate with each other.KESI completed the project before the end of last year at Chunui Apartments in Bucheon located in Chungeui-dong, Wonmi-gu, Bucheon, Gyeonggi Province, which was recommended by Korea Housing Management (KHMA).The Bucheon Chunui Jugong Apartments are a complex of permanent rental apartments completed in 1992, consisting of a total of 976 households with 12 elevators. The original elevators in the apartment complex were replaced by new ones in 2008, but the current ones also have many scratches with somewhat dim lighting, requiring elevator facility improvement. At present, this complex houses 471 households receiving basic living security allowance, 219 households with disabled member(s), 60 North Korean defector families and 12 single parent families.

Renovation of elevator interior designKESI conducted the Happy Elevator pilot project with the 12 elevators in the Bucheon Chunui Jugong Apartments.First, messy elements in cars, such as restaurant leaflets and graffiti, were cleared and the car wall design was renewed to improve the elevator environment. In the interior, the existing cold stainless steel image was replaced by poems and artwork, bringing emotional stability to users. The lights were also replaced by more pleasant ones and the installation of emergency call devices was supported to renew the interior atmosphere.Second, KESI conducted an elevator culture and etiquette campaign. The campaign is designed to encourage users to say hello with each other during morning peak hours when most people are headed to work. A culture where people greet first while using the elevator was created to make an elevator as a space where neighbors can be more friendly with each other. In addition, the campaign induced users to consider others first when getting on and off the elevator or to hold the door for the aged, the disabled and children.Third, education and promotion for correct and safe use of elevator were carried out. A campaign video is continuously showing through the monitor inside the elevator, and a safety campaign was conducted under the motto “Have a Safe and Happy Day”.

accident prevention and safety elevator cultureStarting with the Bucheon Chunui Jugong Apartment, the Happy Elevator project will be continuously implemented. KESI is planning to conduct the project for obsolete elevators with the remaining service life of three to five years or elevators with the record of deadly accidents or crimes in permanent rental apartments managed by KHMA.KESI completed the pilot project and opinion surveys by the end of last year, and beginning this year, it will gradually implement the project in cooperation with civic organizations.“Korea is an elevator powerhouse with the total number of elevators exceeding 500,000, but the level of elevator use culture and the accident rate remains at the level of semi-developed nations,” said KESI President Kong Chang-seug. “We expect that this Happy Elevator project for socially disadvantaged classes will improve elevator environments to a large extent and contribute to preventing elevator accidents and creating a safety culture.”

KOREA ELEVATOR SAFETY INSTITUTE . 27KESI Safety Shining bright in crisis situations! Emergency Evacuation Elevator

We need a special elevator to shorten evacuation time!In modern days, many precious lives are lost particularly in fires at high-rise buildings, and accordingly there is an increasing demand for faster evacuation using specially-designed elevators for evacuation. Given the structure of high-rise buildings, it is difficult to secure the safety of users only with evacuation stairways or limited fire zones. As it takes time before initial firefighting effort gets underway in earnest after a fire breaks out, and the rapid spread of smoke can cause serious injuries or claim human lives in a short time, it is very important to reduce evacuation time. As the existing common elevator cannot exert sufficient performance in detering smoke and heat or supplying firefighting water and emergency power, it cannot be used as a means for evacuation. For this reason, there has been an increasing demand for evacuation elevators equipped with special performance.

Transforming to evacuation elevator in a crisis! The evacuation elevator prevents smoke and heat from flowing into the entrance of the elevator platform, and is equipped with smoke and heat sensors, a smoke and toxic gas blocking device, fire-resistant door, heat-resistant packing that seals the door, laser guide beam, built-in camera, emergency lighting and waterproof and explosion-proof buttons. It also features a car air supply system, voice guidance device, hoistway equipment waterproofing, drainage system, elevator pressurized air supply system preventing the chimney effect, and self power supply system. However, this special elevator can also be used as an ordinary elevator in ordinary time.

Unlike common elevators, an emergency evacuation elevator is an elevator equipped with capabilities to evacuate people safely even in smoke, heat, or in the absence of fire-fighting water distribution and power supply. This elevator is usually used in the same way as ordinary elevators but it exerts the optimum performance in a crisis, ensuring that elevator users are safe.

No fear of high-rise buildings any more!High-rise buildings need to consider evacuation methods for various crisis situations such as fire, bombing, explosion, terror, biochemical attacks, weather anomalies and earthquakes. In fact, many skyscrapers have had no proper measures for such dangerous situations. The evacuation elevator features the door, car, hoistway and electrical wiring, and emergency power supply, which are exposed to smoke, heat and firefighting water, and exerts safety performance to prevent smoke from coming inside the hoistway in fires. The evacuation elevator in high-rise buildings primarily aims to provide a means to evacuate people inside a building during a fire. It is also designed to be used to evacuate people quickly before or during firefighting work after the occurrence of the fire.

The figure shows how the mechanism of a jet-sprayed film was used to block smoke, toxic gases and heat at the evacuation elevator door in case of a fire. It is necessary to open and close the elevator door to let occupants in and out, but at the same time, it is also necessary to block toxic gases and heat so they do not flow into the elevator even when the door is opened.

Evolution of elevator technology, evacuation elevatorWith the development of architectural technology, the number of high-rise and super high-rise buildings continues to increase, but life evacuation measures, one of the most important elements in a building, is not catching up with the rapid increase in the number of high-rise buildings. High-rise buildings are susceptible not only to fires but also to bombing or terrorism. Public transportation and multi-purpose facilities such as subways and rail stations also need to have appropriate evacuation measures in an array of emergency situations, and evacuation elevators are expected to be used as the fastest, most efficient means of evacuation. The performance and purpose of an evacuation elevator represents the progress of elevator technology from a transportation convenience to safe evacuation of people in disasters in high-rise buildings. The safe evacuation elevator equipped with appropriate performance is expected to play a role as a modern invention to save lives at high-rise buildings susceptible to large disasters and improve the happiness index of people.

KOREA ELEVATOR SAFETY INSTITUTE . 33Industry The opening of the era of 500,000 elevators in Korea - Tracing back the glorious history of the Korean elevator

The year 1910 when the elevator was first introduced in Korea was when Japan colo-nized Korea. Japan established the Bank of Joseon in 1907 for monetary subordination and completed it a few months ahead of the colonization in 1910. In this bank building, an OTIS elevator was installed as a vertical means of transportation. In 1914, the first motor-driven, passenger el-evator was introduced. This elevator, which was installed in the Cheoldo Hotel (modern Westin Chosun Hotel), was made by OTIS. The first elevator financed by Korea was the elevator of Hwashin Department Store located in the Jongno intersection. In the department store, the nation’s first escala-tor was also installed but unfortunately no documents about this remain.

Although the nation’s first elevator ap-peared in 1910, it can be deemed that the Korean elevator industry made a start in earnest in October 1945 with the establish-ment of the nation’s first elevator company, Seoul Elevator. Renamed Korea Elevator Manufacture in 1948, the company main-tained its business by repairing and main-taining elevators installed in many build-ings, including the Capitol Building (former Japanese Government-General of Korea building), Bando Hotel, Chosun Hotel and U.S. troops buildings. In 1949, after the es-tablishment of the Korean government, the company installed an OTIS elevator in the U.S. Embassy in Korea as the first imported elevator.

The elevator economy is proportional to the income level of the times as it is closely re-lated with the current social circumstances although it is not a key industry. Starting to heal the wounds of war in the critical year of 1955, Korea began to concentrate its strength to the economic recovery, and at this time, the elevator industry also began to rise. The Korean government had begun the First Five-Year Economic Development Plan in 1962, and as a result, a large number of plants were built across the nation. Owners thought imported elevators were too expen-sive, and naturally they began to demand the development of domestic elevators, and this led to the rise of the Korean elevator industry.

A series of political moves, starting with the Yeoui-do development plan, followed by the decision of Yeongdong district development promotion zone in 1973, decision of Banpo district development in 1975, and the es-tablishment of the Urban Redevelopment Act in 1976, provided a momentum strong enough to afford the elevator industry with a promising prospect. In particular, with the establishment of the provision making it mandatory to install elevators in all new six-story or higher buildings, the elevator demand began to surge dramatically. In the late 1970s, the demand for elevators continued to increase with the real estate economic boom, development of the auto-mobile industry, construction of subways, building of large ships, and the increasing demand for welfare and convenience facili-ties after Korea attained exports of 10 bil-lion dollars. Accordingly, a slew of elevator production facilities were established and the technology development was acceler-ated. This upward trend continued to the 1990s powered by the government plans for new towns and regional housing expansion.

In 1990, the annual elevator supply exceed-ed 10,000 units, and the number of eleva-tors exported also doubled from 2,000 to 4,000. In this period, subway stations were also premiumized and the legal regulations on parking spaces were also reinforced, and this led to a rapid rise in demand for escala-tors, elevators for the disabled, and eleva-tors for automobiles, and consequently the elevator industry made dramatic progress, securing its status as an independent busi-ness area.LG Industrial Systems established an eleva-tor factory in Dalian, China, to expand its presence in the Chinese market, and as a result, could become a large elevator com-pany with production capabilities of over 2,000 elevators per month from its Korean and Chinese factories. Dongyang Elevator scaled up its size to a group, establishing affiliates, and began to modernize its manu-facturing facilities. Hyundai Elevator estab-lished a factory in Shanghai, China, suc-cessfully launching its business expansion. In this way, the underlying growth engine that enabled the dramatic growth of the elevator industry in the 1990s includes not only tangible characteristics of the times but also invisible efforts of parts producers who made efforts to develop various parts and improve their quality.

Note the hidden power of made in Korea elevators - To the world, to the futureSongsan Special Elevator / Korea Eltec / Star Lift / Sung-Am Electric

The number of Korean elevators exceeded the 500,000 mark in February 2014. This means one elevator per 100 persons. The Korean elevator industry keeps the proactive power accumulated over decades through the process of modernization and industrialization. Moreover, there are many cases where sev-eral domestic elevator SMEs developed elevators with their own technology and exported them to over-seas markets or supplied them to renowned makers despite challenging environments. This article will give a brief introduction to some of these companies and their products. Park Dae-seong, chief editor of Lift Focus

Songsan Special Elevator Co., Ltd.

Songsan Special Elevator Co., Ltd. (CEO Kim Woon-young, www.songsan.co.kr), a special elevator mak-er, is literally a small giant leading elevator technology with its cutting-edge technology and superior products. In particular, its anti-reversal device (ARD) for escalator, S-Brake® is a patented technology leading an operation mode of safety.Designated by Public Procurement Service as an excellent product, is recognized to be the optimal solution to protect passengers’ safety in case of reversing or overspeed accidents caused by mechani-cal, electrical or electronic factors, such as malfunctioning of the main brake of an escalator or moving walkway, broken chain, malfunctioning of control device or blackout. This system can be installed safely not only to new escalators but also to any existing types or models without needing to change their structure. Another innovative product of the company, X-vator®, is the nation’s first evacuation elevator that enables the safe evacuation of people in case of fire in high-rise buildings. When a fire occurs in the building, the elevator blocks smoke, flames and heat with a jet-sprayed film and sealing packing to ensure that passengers can be evacuated safely. This product can be installed in any size to a standard hoistway without separate architectural modification, and used as a normal passenger elevator in ordinary times.Featuring its original design, Constellation® is an elevator with an arch design of the entrance instead of the ordinary square design. Through this, the product delivers more elegance in architectural space as well as more comfort in space with larger effective space than existing elevators. Primarily with these products, Songsan has already conducted active marketing in many overseas mar-kets, including Russia, Iran, UAE, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Vietnam, Indonesia, Taiwan, The Philippines, Hong Kong and Bangladesh. The marketing targets include Abu Dhabi nuclear power plant in UAE, Samsung complex in Uzbekistan, many Russian regions and the Sochi Olympics region, and the Presi-dential House in Taiwan.

Star Lift Inc.

Star Lift Inc. (CEO Kim Jin-ho, www.starlift.kr), an elevator door system specialist, is the company that possesses the manufacturing technology for the elevator door operating device, one of the five core parts of elevators. The company has recently relocated its headquarters and factory into Geochang Industrial Complex and is in the process of cementing its status as a hidden champion. Hav-ing strength in the design and manufacture of non-standard car door devices and landing door devices such as inclined type, view type, hydraulic type, frigle type and rectangular penetration type, Star lift is highly recognized for its superior door device technology in Korea. The company supplies its high quality elevator landing door operating devices to government offices, railway services, hotels and shopping centers, and is actively pursuing export by, for example, participating in foreign exhibitions such as Interlift. It supplies various door types including center opening, side opening and up slide opening type doors depending on the location of door operation, and 2-6 Co door types, and the scope of door opening ranges from 600 to 6,000mm. The company has reduced door deformation by applying a non-welding method, and improved eco-friendliness by using a non-painting method. It also realizes the scale of economy by eliminating any loss in length through material cutting according to the use rather than standard type. When it comes to export, the company exports its products by signing contracts directly with engineers in Russia, Mongolia and the Middle East. The main export destinations include Russia, China, Vietnam, Indonesia, Taiwan, the Philippines, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan and Bangladesh. More recently flat-belt type home lifts were developed exclusively for foreign markets.

Sung-Am Electric Co., Ltd.-

gency power supply system ARD

To make the safest elevator in the world, Sung-Am Electric (CEO Lee Yong-gyu, [email protected]) invented an elevator that is “OK” even in a blackout. This device is the result of cutting-edge technol-ogy that generates emergency power immediately after a blackout and moves the elevator to the closest level to safely rescue passengers. As blackouts occur usually in the whole area of a region, once it occurs, scores or hundreds of eleva-tors will experience the blackout accident together. For this reason, passengers are usually locked in the car until the power comes back due to insufficient rescue personnel. In this case, patients, the aged and children will get terrified inside the elevator, and thus the elevator needs to have the function of quickly and automatically rescuing passengers. This emergency rescue system is called “Automatic Rescue System”, and the emergency rescue device, which is the core element of this system, is called “Automatic Rescue Device”, or ARD. Sung-Am Electric’s ARD is easy to install even in a small space thanks to its compact design, and features no battery consumption except during the rescue operation period. It immediately responds to peak power and non linear load, provides interface without any separate device, and is equipped with a portable monitor for monitoring from outside ARD. The company has already developed and released various ARD models for a wide range of elevators from home elevators to dozens of kW level large elevators. In the 20 years since its foundation, Sung-Am Electric has conducted technology development in this area proactively and supplied superior products to major domestic and foreign elevator makers. In particular, the company’s ARD is equipped to made-in-Korea elevators exported to overseas markets. Over 10,000 sets of ARD have been equipped to elevators and exported to many countries around the world, catching on splendidly with customers.

Koreans madly in love with KimchiForeigners who first try kimchi often scramble to drink water, saying, “My tongue is on fire.” Additionally the mouth-numb-ing spiciness on their tongue often makes their eyes water. This explains why many foreign visitors roll their eyes when Koreans express how refreshingly cool the taste of kimchi is. On the otherhand foreigners who have lived here long enough find kimchi’s initial sour taste with a nice spicy burn in the mouth to their liking. Allured by the combination of briny, spicy, pungent flavors with a crunchy texture, after a few tastes, they quickly begin to love it.That Koreans habitually serve and eat kimchi with nearly ev-ery meal is a testament to long-standing eating habits. It is known that eating too much fatty or sweet food may make you feel stomach discomfort whereas drinking kimchi juice makes you feel immediate relief in the stomach. That is why seniors often drink one spoonful of kimchi juice after finish-ing a meal. All this makes kimchi “the super-king of side dishes,” and people often say that “I cannot live without it.”There is even scientific evidence to logically support what is often called Korea’s love affair with kimchi. It is none other than capsaicin found in red pepper powder. The capsaicin that produces kimchi’s spiciness also stimulates the taste buds and brings out its refreshing taste after eating some-thing. Owing to such actions of capsaicin, kimchi is a staple in Korean food culture and is not replaceable with any other dishes, making it Korea’s most representative food.

Last year, U.S. First lady Michelle Obama tweeted a photo of kimchi she made herself with the words, “Last week, we picked Napa cabbage in the garden. Now we’re using it to make kimchi in the kitchen. Make it at home.” Then, she shared her recipe of how to make kimchi in a detailed and accurate manner. Michelle Obama’s photo and her short comments about kimchi well illustrate the fact that kimchi is not only the most famous Korean dish, but also liked by people around the globe. Then, what sort of scientific and nutritional attraction does kimchi have that it demands such an attention from people the world over including Michelle Obama?

Kimchi, a naturally-fermented

Unlimited transformation from the most common Korean side dish to one of today’s trendy fusion foods

Kimchi, a rich probiotic repository of microorganismsPeople who have experienced the healing power of kimchi consider it a “restorative food.” To make kimchi, daikon, napa cabbage, cucumber and other vegetables are soaked in a brine solution. And, it also includes more than 30 different seasonings of which hot red pepper flakes, Korean leek, garlic, fish sauce, etc., are the most common varieties. After that, all these ingredients are mixed together, then added to the salted vegetables to sea-son them. Literally speaking, a golden nugget of nutritional value is being created in the process. According to the research results, kimchi has a cancer-fighting effect by preventing constipation and colorectal cancer, and by boosting immunity. It also helps in weight loss. In addition, kimchi contains a treasure-trove of scientific and nutritious efficacy. Put simply, kimchi is a “naturally fermented food of essential compounds.” From its making to fermentation, kimchi is known for the beneficial probiotic effects of microorganisms and enzymes beneficial to the human body aiding in all metabolic processes in the body. When Lee So-yeon, the first Korean astronaut, traveled in a spacecraft, she brought fried kimchi with her. It is because kimchi was the best food to help reduce the space radiation and supplement much needed dietary fiber. Since then, kimchi has made the top list of space foods that were mainly monopolized by the U.S. and Russia. The difference between kimuchi of Japan and kimchi of Korea is none other than the fer-mentation itself. Kimuchi is an unfermented pickled food, whereas kimchi is a fermented food producing a multitude of nutritional benefits in the process of lactic acid fermentation. All this explains clearly enough why kimchi was chosen as one of the world’s five most healthy foods in 2006 and why kimchi was named as “UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity” in 2013.

-tion from side dishes to main dishesAnother enduring appeal of kimchi is that it produces a myriad of different tastes while of-fering an infinite array of cooking recipes depending on the degree of its fermentation. Recently, a new category of fusion kimchi dishes has been developed. There are countless kimchi recipes including kimchi salad, kimchi canape, kim-chi hamburger, kimchi burrito, and more. Such transformation of kimchi is pleasing to the palate of foreigners as well as that of the Korean people. In particular, the “enthusiastic K-food fervor” all but guar-antees a dramatic change of kimchi in terms of its uniqueness and variations for the coming days.distinctive and diverse.

There are about 200 types of kimchi that are currently known so far. Due to its too many varieties even native Koreans cannot track down all there is to it. Despite being made mainly with napa cabbage, daikon, cucumber, and others, a distinctive flavor and taste can be readily created using an assortment of other available ingredients such as herbs, seaweed, fish and shellfish, and meat, among others. In recent years, a number of new types of kimchi have been invented. For instance, nuts are added to produce a nutty flavor, and sweet potato is added to make it taste sweet. Many fruits good for the body are added in making kimchi to name a few. As traditional kimchi has transformed itself to novelty kimchi in many different ways, children and foreigners, originally not taken by the spicy taste of red pepper power and the briny and fishy flavor of salted fish, are now attracted to the new flavors of trendy kimchi. In addition, it is easy to make many different and distinctive types of kimchi by selecting and using a multitude of varied ingredi-ents with a touch of trendy elements added into the mix.

When asked about the most impressive tourist destination or program they experienced while staying in Korea, most foreign tourists picked the Temple Stay as their favourite. They found it memorable because they were able to empty their minds and be relieved of petty concerns while immersing themselves in learning traditional culture in the background of Korea’s stunningly beautiful nature. Temple stays are a unique opportunity for foreigners to stay in a Buddhist temple, learn and experience Korean Buddhist culture firsthand. At the temple, the day begins as early as 3 a.m. and continues until 10 p.m. Throughout the day participants follow Buddhist monks’ daily activities including Yebul, Chamseon, Dado, Barugongyang, etc. And, in the process they are motivated to depart on a journey of self-discovery, realizing the truth that they should be able to empty their minds before they can fill them with something spiritual and inspiring.

Meditation Program, Temple Stay A Temple Stay program includes ceremonies such as Yebul1), in which monks make repeated bows to Buddha; Chamseon2), in which monks meditate seated on the floor; Dado3), in which monks drink tea observing traditional tea etiquette; Ulryeok4), in which monks do communal work; and Barugongyang5), which is a unique way of eating a traditional Buddhist meal, serv-ing food in a bowl, etc. These activities are conducted in complete silence from early dawn under a starry sky to late night when all things of nature fall asleep. At 3 o’clock in the morning, the monk’s first moktak (a wooden handbell) is struck. It signals the start of the temple’s daily life. At this time, the Moktak is struck three times loudly and then three times quietly, and then repeated in that sequence. The Moktak’s loud sound is to wake up sleeping participants and its quiet sound is for small living creatures nearby that do not need to wake up early in the morning. Participants wash themselves, clean the temple grounds, and then go to the dawn Yebul. Yebul is originally a ceremony to pay respect to Buddha, but Yebul for Temple Stay participants is intended for them to meditate and do something meaningful for the day.

At 5 o’clock, the morning Barugongyang is observed. Baru means “a monk’s bowl,” and Gongyang means “an act of eating.” This ceremony teaches the correct mindset we should possess toward food, which must be pure and untainted. During this practice, participants rinse their bowls with pure water, and then take only as much food as they can eat in their bowls. At the temple, where monks consider food not for filling their stomach but filling their minds and spirits, not a single grain of rice should be wasted. After finishing the meal, they pour clean water in the bowl to clean it. Since Barugongyang requires complete silence from beginning to end, it is very important to keep quiet. In Barugongyang, a bowl of simple, modest food during each meal also signifies the act of getting rid of our greed and leaving nothing to be wasted. After the morning Barugongyang, participants are free to take a walk in the woods and ascend a mountain. They drink scented tea and practice meditation. Depending on the circumstances, they make 108 prostrations, 1,000 prostrations or 3,000 prostrations, and help monks with their communal work. They talk to monks about the life, sitting face to face. They reveal the ups and downs of their lives candidly looking for answers in their quest to fully embrace future lives. At 11 o’clock in the morning, the midday Barugongyang is observed. At the end of midday Barugongyang, a similar

set of activities as those that follow the morning Baru-gongyang is then repeated. While performing these ac-tivities people learn to clear their cluttered minds before they can be filled. In no time they get through the day of simplicity and quietness.Time at the temple seems to move slower as well as faster. The sun goes down early in the evening. Variations exist depending on which season it is, but normally the evening Barugongyang is given at 5 p.m., and then the evening Yebul is performed at 6 p.m. Keeping themselves busy all day conducting a slew of programs prepared by the temple with only brief private time given, the night seems to fall way too soon and suddenly. At 10 o’clock in the evening, it’s time for the monks to peacefully go to bed. Participants also go to sleep in ob-servance of the temple’s daily schedule and way of life, forgoing the daily routines they follow in their secular life. Because the Temple Stay dictates a principle of “actions to be conducted without a word,” participants naturally learn to talk to themselves in the course of the day. Thus, from the early morning Yebul to the evening Yebul, all participants’ minds remain in their inner world of peace and calm. All this is made possible because the Temple Stay is focused on the practice of meditation for nurturing good habits and an untroubled mind. And this is primarily what attracts the majority of people who participate in the Temple Stay in the first place.

A host of Temple Stay outside of templesThe original purpose of Temple Stay was to have par-ticipants stay in the temple so that they could experience Buddhist culture and life. But in recent years, Temple Stay programs outside of temples sprang up one after another. There are a variety of programs including Hanok (tradi-tional Korean house) Stay that allows visitors to expe-rience the traditional Korean manners and culture, the Farm Stay in which people experience eco-farming and the heartwarming feel of the country huddled together at a guest house provided by the villagers, the Temple Stay for Pregnant Women designed for good prenatal educa-tion, and English Class Temple Stay for middle and high school students, among others There is also a Hands-on Experience Temple Stay. Par-ticipants make traditional Korean sauces like fermented soybean paste and red pepper paste, learn lessons in manners dressed in Hanbok (the traditional Korean clothes), or try their hand at natural dyeing. There were similar programs in the past. However the difference is that such hands-on experience lasts longer than one day or extends to an overnight stay for a more in-depth ex-perience.Of course, there is a short-term Temple Stay for six hours

Year after year, throngs of foreign travelers have visited Korea in order to experience the Temple Stay. They learn Korea’s traditional culture and Buddhist culture through the Temple Stay and practice meditation to find their true self in the course of the temple’s daily life. That’s how the Temple Stay program was able to transform itself into the traveling culture or healing culture, luring people from all over the world to participate. As the Temple Stay programs bring positive reviews, in 2006 the New York Times ran a relevant article, and some universities have actively taken advantage of such programs for international exchange. Furthermore in 2009, the OECD (Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development) chose the Temple Stay as “one of the world’s five most successful culture and tourism pack-ages,” saying “This is a valuable cultural resource with very high competitiveness.” At that time, in the survey for foreign travelers, 79.7% of respondents said, “I will visit Korea to experience the Temple Stay program again.” Leaders of countries that joined G20 in 2010 and Irina

a day. Nevertheless, irrespective of how short or long their stay was, the reflections of all the participants were much the same. Despite its limited time, they were able to have “time to look back on their lives” and “to get a profound new insight into the meaning of life.”As people are getting increasingly interested in the Tem-ple Stay, more programs are being developed and diversi-fied. For example, iPhone applications for foreigners have been developed and special tour guides are now avail-able. Dongkuk University even created a formal training course for credit in the College of Liberal Arts in order to educate and train “Temple Stay specialists.” Such phe-nomena highlight the fact that Temple Stay has become a mainstay of travel & culture contents for Korea.

Korea’s traditional culture con-tents, Temple StayIt was during the 2002 World Cup when the Temple Stay program started for the first time in Korea. It was origi-nally intended to publicize Korea’s traditional culture to foreign visitors and to solve the problem of insufficient accommodations. Since then, it has gradually evolved into today’s Temple Stay as people perceived it as some-thing of “a journey of self-discovery” while taking refuge far away from the hustle and bustle of city life.

Bokova, the Director-General of UNESCO, said that the Temple Stay program afforded them a rare opportunity to have a glimpse of the beauty and calm sentiments of Korea. Life is the most peaceful when it goes along with the flow of nature. That is when life finally becomes simple and satisfied. However, it can be easily mistaken as “retrogression” instead to people living in our fast-paced modern world. At present we are flooded by such trendy words as “efficiency, convenience, challenge, develop-ment, exploration, etc.,” failing to appreciate the many little yet precious things in life. Therefore, more people are finding comfort in the healing words like “slow down, unburden and pause”in order to go back to the anxiety-free state of a natural being. You are prompted to depart on a journey trying to find the place of most serenity and quietness. By doing so, you find your true self and be-come one with nature, which is the culminating point of what Temple Stay is.
