CONSTRUCTION of the R2 billion KougaWind Farm at Oyster Bay is on track withwork teams upgrading access roads and cast-ing foundation bases for the 32 turbines.When operational in the final quarter of2014, the wind farm will generate 80MW ofclean and renewable power.According to Pieter Taljaard, the site con-structionmanager, 12 of the 32 concrete baseseach of which is 20m in diametre to supportthe 80m high turbines, have been cast.“Progress has been very good with theweather being very kind to us. Work is gener-ally on track and in some instances evenahead of schedule,” said Taljaard.Shipping of the turbine equipment andparts will take place between December 2013and May 2014 with the delivery and erection

of the turbines scheduled to take place be-tween February and September 2014, depend-ing on the weather conditions.Workhas also started on thewind farmsub-station and is progressingwell,while the elec-trical long lead items and switchgear havebeen ordered and will be installed during thefirst half of 2014.Eskom is responsible for the electrical gridconnection and overhead power line to theKouga Wind Farm, and is on track to ensurethe June 2014 grid connection date ismet. “In-dividual turbines at the Kouga Wind Farmwill join the grid in June 2014, with the full32-turbines being operational by December2014,” said Kouga Wind Farm project manag-er Chris Els.A defining feature of the KougaWind Farm

is that it far exceeds the new minimumthreshold of 2.5% community participationset for each Renewable Energy Bid. ALTHOUGH the Kouga Municipality hasimpounded just over 100 cattle since theopening of its cattle pound in Humansdorpabout six weeks ago, clamping down on straylivestock remains a huge challenge.

Livestock owners who do not take respon-sibility for their animals and the fact that themunicipality must hire a trailer, do notmake the task at hand any easier.

According to municipal spokesperson,Laura-Leigh Randall, there has been a defi-nite improvement in Humansdorp with live-stock owners taking greater responsibilityfor their animals.

“Jeffreys Bay remains a challenge. Live-stock owners pay for the release of their ani-mals, but then simply allow them to roamaround unsupervised again. Efforts to edu-cate these owners around the law and theirresponsibility as livestock owners will be in-creased,” says Randall.

“Law enforcement efforts have been ham-pered by the fact that the municipality hasbeen using a trailer on loan. This delays theresponse time to complaints. The municipal-ity is in the process of procuring its owntrailer which will allow law enforcement of-ficers to respond more promptly to com-plaints.”

.To successfully address the problem ofstray animals in the Kouga, the municipalityopened a cattle pound at the premises of theKouga Fire Department in Humansdorp inthe first week of August.

In the past a privately-owned pound wasused. The Kouga Council was not satisfied

with the manner in which impoundmentswere being handled; consequently, alterna-tive measures were explored. The munici-pality’s ultimate goal is to establish a fully-fledged pound at the SPCA in Humansdorp.

Een van sy kollegas het dit gelukkig gesien en kondie punt van die tou lossny sodat dit om sy been losge-gaan het.

MORE than 18kg dagga, valued at R37 000,was seized by the Joubertina Police earli-er this week.

Police members clamped down on ahouse in Rooibrug, Nuweplaas in Mis-gund on 9 September at approximately11:00 where they confiscated dagga to thevalue of more than R18 000.

A 42-year-old man was arrested for the

illegal possession of dagga and appearedin the Joubertina Magistrate’s Court.

In an unrelated incidents, just minuteslater, information received frommembersof the public, led them to the riverbanksin the same area where dagga to the valueof R19 850 was seized.

No arrestsweremade in the second inci-dent.

JEFFREYS Bay Police members havebeen hard at work with a number of con-victions, totalling 18 years imprisonment,secured in August.

Four criminals have been successfullyconvicted and send to prison for crimes in-cluding house breaking, theft and fraud.

Two suspects have been sent to jail for

fouryears respectively forhousebreakingand theft. Another suspect will spend fiveyears behind bars for theft, while a fourthsuspect has been imprisoned for five yearsfor fraud.

AFTER three years of planning JeffreysBay’s own great adventurer who havecrossed the continent in search of the

ultimate adventure, will now embark on ajourney of a lifetime.

Not only will he revisit some of his favour-ite countries and small towns, but will alsofor the very first time explore North Africa- all from the comfort of his bicycle.At the age of 65, Rob Lindegger will under-

take a solo cycle through Africa.Rob, who left Underberg in Cape Town in

April, has spent winter in Jeffreys Bay and,comeNovember,will be cycling to CapeTownwhere he will finalise the African leg of histrip. From Cape Town he will cycle up thewest coast through Namibia, Zambia, Mala-wi, Tanzania, Uganda, the Sudan/ Ethiopiaand Egypt, across into Europe and to Spain.Once in Spain, he plans to look at the possibil-ities of cycling east.“I am in no rush, I gave up rushing when

I gave up work. I sold all my worldly posses-sions and this is now my way of life - all 51kgof it,” says Rob.With this adventure, a life long dream will

come true.“In 2001, my wife lost her safari business in

Tanzania with the 9/11 and we returned toSouth Africa bankrupt. When we arrivedhere, we only had 13 tin trunks of possessionsand three cats. I swore then I would do some

sort of trip through Africa. In Ballito I was in-troduced to Rotary International and planneda 10 year solo circumnavigation. Due to cir-cumstancesweput the ride onhold. But, Iwasnot prepared to just give up,” says Rob. “Now,12 years later, the time is right.”He says: “I originally planned to buy a boat,

but then things changed and I decided towalkthrough Africa with a pram. Now, with thedream about to become a reality, I haveswopped the pram for a bicycle.”According to Rob, who has always enjoyed

an adventure and travelled most of his life,the travelling has so far been physically andmentally rewarding. “It has opened up myeyes to the beauty around me and I have metsome lovely people. You miss so much whenyou go home after work and watch televi-sion.”And how long did he train beforehand?

“The ride is the training - the training alongtheway is part of the experience. I plan to rideat least 30km in the morning and another30km in the evening.”Rob believes that it is very important to

travel as light as possible. “I only carry withme my clothes, cooking gear, camping gear,camera, food, toiletries, first aid kit and thenecessary paperwork.“Food is limited to the basics: jungle oats

for 4 to 5 days, pasta, tea and coffee, packetsof pasta sauce andwater. I buy fresh fruit andvegetables and occasionally treat myself to ameal at a local Wimpy.“Once in Namibia I will have to carry more

food and water for the longer distances be-tween towns.”He says: “If my health does not keep, I will

complete the journey by any othermeans nec-essary. Finishing the trip is the most impor-tant thing - no matter how long it takes orwhatmode of transport I must use,” said Rob.Rob is doing the ride for a number of rea-

sons. Firstly to promote Rotary Internationaland secondly to raise funds for PevenseyPlace in Underberg, Cape Town. But, moreimportantly, to illustrate that there can be anactive life after 60.

To date, he has spentR48 000 onhis journey.This includes buying the bike, clothing andnecessary gear.“There is so much out there - grab it. If you

Food Pantry in Jeffreys Bay. According toher, the Food Pantry is a critical link betweenfood and the peoplewhoneed it. “Food insecu-rity impacts people in all walks of life. Wewant to reach them all - from working fami-lies to senior citizens,” says Samantha.According to Samantha, the Hope Pantry is

a God inspired idea. “So many people in Jef-freys Bay are struggling to make ends meetand go to bed hungry at night. With theproject, we hope not only to feed those whoare hungry, but to also give them hope.“One must have compassion, that is what

compels me to do something. By fulfillingphysical needs in our community and distrib-uting food, we aim to show everyone they areloved and valued.”Samantha says that the Hope Pantry is an

all-volunteer non-profit organisation. “Ourmission is to feed children, families and eve-ryday peoplewho go hungry for reasons rang-ing from money shortage to receiving an un-expected bill on a low income.“We are appealing to the community to get

involved and help fight hunger in our town.Many of us have friends and family to turnto when the going gets tough, but what if your
