And so are the seedlings that they nurture in their brand-new state-of- the-art vegetable tunnels. Last Thursday the staff of Russells in Humansdorp, in partnership with the Acorn Foundation, got their hands dirty in a worthwhile commu- nity project, constructing two vege- table tunnels valued at R150 000 for an underprivileged school in the area. The Rainbow Day-Care Centre, headed under the Victory4All Pro- jects, became the first school in the Kouga region to boost two vegetable tunnels on the school grounds. In addition to the tunnels, 500 seed- lings - including spinach, beetroot, onions, cabbage and lettuce - were planted on the day. Now, the school is not only able to grow their own vegetables and enjoy them fresh from the garden on a daily basis, but they will also be able to generate income through selling these ‘gifts of the earth’ to surround- ing schools and residents. The Rainbow Day-Care is home to 58 learners with special needs, such as physical and mental disabilities or learning difficulties. School principal Helen Nel (62), a former teacher at Graslaagte Prima- ry School for 42 years and who has been at the Rainbow Day-Care for the past four months, said: “We feel pri- vileged to be the first school to re- ceive these tunnels. Now we can en- sure that every child gets a balanced diet. “Apart from the nutritive value, the project is also something new and a big challenge for the learners, which is of vital importance as these kids must be stimulated, motivated and activated. “This is going to be a continues hands-on experience seeing that the learners will from now on be respon- sible for the vegetable tunnels and the growing of the vegetables.” According to Scottie Scott, divi- sional sales manager at Russells, this is the first project of its kind in the Kouga region initiated by them as a company. “As Russells we would like to give back to the community that supports us and are by doing so responsible for our success in the business segment. What better way is there to say thank you than by taking on projects that will change the lives of those in need,” said Scott. According to Scott, an employee of Russels will keep visiting the school to make sure that the project conti- nues to run smoothly. “Photos will be send to Acorn on a weekly basis, and if any problems are encountered they will be on-hand to assist the school.” =Learners Avrolene Daniels and Abigail Zana are mesmerised by the seedlings. BREWING and presenting the perfectcup of cappuccino might not be anolympic event, but for the youngest

barista at InFood it might as well have been.

And he will not exchange his two trophies foranything in the world, except for the interna-tional barista crown, that is.

Trained by the best, his colleagues, CharlesNgwaroi the barista at InFood, competed at theregional South African Barista Championshipin Port Elizabeth last week - and came backhome with no less than two awards.

This achievement came as the big-gest, and definitely the most welcome, surprise for Charles.

“My nerves got the better of me du-ring the first round on Thursday and Idid not dream for one moment that Iwill make it through to the next round,”said Charles.

“Hearing my name being called out, gave me the confidence I needed, andfrom there on, I gave it my all - no morenerves or thinking that I am not as goodas the best.”

This attitude made Charles the thirdbarista to bring back home an award toInFood. Not only did he scoop up theaward for the Best Cappuccino, but wasalso crowned the overall winner.

“I am so proud of Charles, he truly de-serve these awards, especially keepingin mind that he has never done some-thing like this before,” said the ownerof InFood, Jayne.

On September 23, Charles will com-pete in the National SA Barista Cham-pionship in Johannesburg.

The format of the competition will bethe same of that in the regional round.

Each competitor must prepare and serve 12separate espresso beverages: 4 espresso, 4 cap-puccinos, and 4 “signature” drinks of their owncreation. Competitors have only fifteen mi-nutes to prepare all twelve drinks and arejudged on various elements including their cho-sen bean, station cleanliness, taste, beveragepresentation, technical skills and total impres-sion by a distinguished panel of judges.

SCASA is running a national competitionwhere they give away two coffee experienceevenings to the valued of R2 000 each, two coffeepassionate courses for four valued at R4 000, acase of champagne and a coffee and producthamper. Tickets for the competition cost R20each and are available at InFood.

Janneke.

So gesê so gedaan.

“’n Paar jaar terug was ek op diekruin van my internasionale musi-kale loopbaan, maar as gevolg vanverkeerde besluite is ek van baiedinge gestroop - my loopbaan, myaansien, my hele menswees,” hetGeldenhuys gesê.

baai ’n nuwe begin vir my geword.
