THE Jeffreys Bay Wind Farm has ploughedthousand of Rand into a local enterprise de-velopment - giving growing of vegetables un-der dragline irrigation a windy boost.

Hugh Bosman, a tenant farmer on the out-skirts of Hankey, received much-neededequipment and machinery valued at overR450 000 from the Jeffreys Bay Wind Farm. This includes a tractor, plough, planter andsprayer. He furthermore received technicaltraining and support to ensure that this newequipment and machinery is optimally util-ised and effectively cared for.In addition, a storage shed tohouse the trac-

tor and implements is being constructed.Bosman took over the farming enterprise

from his father over twenty years ago, leas-ing the land from the CongregationalChurch in Hankey, and employs between

five and nine people.“The assistance from the JeffreysBayWind

Farm resulted in my farm becoming moreproductive, with every available portion ofland now cultivated,” says Bosman. “Theamount of land under production increasedfrom seven hectares to 14 hectares, which inturn has increased the farm’s turnover. Wecan now employ more people to assist us dur-ing busy periods.”Bosmanplans to increaseproductionon the

adjoining land that is now under cultivation.

Ditwaarsku ookdat ’n “ineen-storting vandie kragver-spreidingsinfra-struktuur”onvermydelikkan wees asdie nasionaletesourie niebetrokke raaknie.

THE NSRI Station 37, Jeffreys Bay boasts abrand new bright red and yellow rescue ves-sel donated by a group of hard-working wom-en from the Project Group based in Johannes-burg.

The R160 000 vessel, a 4.2m inflatable boatto be used for inshore and inland rescues, wasfittingly christened Project Group Rescuer ata ceremony on Saturday.“It is wonderful to see the result of many

requests for prizes and sponsorships come tofruition. We are delighted that this vessel willassist the NSRI in saving lives, it makes allthe hard work worthwhile,”says RosemaryRenton from Project Group who has been in-volved with the NSRI for over 30 years.According to Jeffreys Bay Station Com-

mander, Rieghard Janse van Rensburg, theProject Group Rescuer replaced their exist-ing 4.2m vessel, Loved1s24. “This vessel assist-ed with numerous rescues in her 12-year lifeat NSRI of which the last three years was atStation 37. Her last big rescue was in April, when she was used to rescue six people justoutside of Loerie, who was cut-off by a river

that burst its banks due to the massive rainfallthe previous days,” says Janse van Rensburg.Apart from the Project Group Rescuer, Sta-

tion 37 is home to the Eddie Beaumont II - a5.5 Rigid Inflatable Boat rated for day andnight rescues - and theDiscoveryRescueRun-ner 12 - a 3.6 custom built rescue craft for in-shore and inland rescues in high-risk areas.Janse van Rensburg says the biggest chal-

lenge faced by the local NSSRI is to get newtrainees. “It takes a minimum of six monthsto get a new recruit qualified as a Sea GoingCrew Member, who can assist with a rescue, and another 18 months to qualify such a per-son as a Coxswain.“All we ask from potential trainees is com-

mitment. We will teach them what they needto know.”.Project Group is a group of women based inJohannesburg, who organise fundraisingevents to give back to society. The proceedsof a golf day were donated to fund the ProjectGroup Rescuer.

“TO save a life is one of the best feelings inthe world. They get to live another day, haveanother birthday and be with family.”

Cheryl Gibson-Dicks is a volunteer rescueswimmer for the National Sea Rescue Insti-tute (NSRI) Station 31, Jeffreys Bay and willrisk her life in a split second to rescue astranger in need. After six years of watching the crew mem-

bers of the local NSRI train every Sunday aft-ernoon, Cheryl, who loves swimming, decid-ed to join them a year ago.“It goes without saying that I love the sea

and the opportunity to train with such a dy-namic and committed team,” says Cheryl.“Drowning must be one of the most awfulways to die. It happens within seconds. Itmust be terrifying to think you are going todrown. By joining theNSRI I amnot only ableto improvemy own swimming skills, but alsohelp save lives.“I also assist with body recovering. It is

emotionally draining and extremely difficultto talk about, but it is part of the job. The fami-ly members of the victim can get closurewhen the body is returned and they are ableto bury their loved one.“As a rescue swimmer, there are some you

can save, and some you can’t. One can neverget used to it when a life is lost, but it is thereality of the job.”Cheryl says: “We are subjected to a rigid

training programme that enables us to deal

with a wide variety of emergencies. No tworescues are ever the same. Being able to havethe knowledge and ability to manage rescuescenarios and apply resources in differentscenarios are very satisfying. We all undergotwo fitness assessments a year - you must beable to run at a certain speed and swim a cer-tain distance. The more you practise, the bet-ter you get.“Youmust be able to stay calm, responsible,

committed and most important of all, trustyour crew members. The coxswain’s word islaw. You do not question him, you just do ashe instructs.”According to Cheryl, you learn a lot about

yourself and teamwork. “You cannot do italone. It is important to remember that youare not doing it for yourself.”When asked if there are any additional

challenges she faces as a woman in the emer-gency services, she answered with a firm no.“It is not more difficult being a woman at theNSRI. I do not expect any special treatmentjust because I am of the opposite sex. Just likeany new volunteer, I had to fit in with themale structure and earn the respect of thecrew members,” says Cheryl. What advice does she have for residents

whoare considering joining theNSRI as a vol-unteer? “Take the time to do the necessary re-search and be sure it is what you want to do.Be prepared to learn, be disciplined and takeorders and criticism. Make an effort to keepphysically fit, so that you are always a strongand active part of your crew. And be preparedto clean toilets and clean the base.”

NSRIvolunteer risks life to saveothers

IT takes a special kind of person to not onlygive up their time, but also risk his life foranother. At the NSRI in Jeffreys Bay, volunteers

take it a step further. They do not sign upfor two hours once a week, they commit toNSRI and agree to make themselves availa-ble to go at any time, any place, anyhow. They prioritise the needs of a stranger - theywill leave a business meeting or their sis-ter’s wedding or their son’s first rugbymatch. Not only this, but in addition they agree

to risk their lives. They will head out to seain theworst conditions - when everyone elseis heading home and battening down thehatches. There are various ways to volunteer your

time for sea rescue, with the first being SeaGoing Crew. It is always beneficial, but notrequired for new sea going recruits to havea background in the marine environmentand be familiar with the sea, radio opera-tion, navigation and first aid, but if you arefit, healthy and eager to learnmore, you canbe put to good use.The second area of involvement is shore

crew, who assist with the administration ofthe base, as well as act as controllers for

training exercises and rescue operations. This is best suited for people who want getinvolved, but prefer to stay on dry land. The third area is coast-watchers, best

suited for retired people who have a goodview of the ocean from their homes. Coast-watchers are a vital part of the team, as theyact as “spotters”.All training sessions take place after

hours, and standby for rescues is a 24/7/365commitment best suited to people who live10 minutes from the rescue base.Volunteering is not glamorous work, but

very rewarding. There is a lot of trainingand a whole lot of cleaning up involved. It will be at least six months to a year be-

fore new volunteers will be ready for a real-life rescue. Crew members and trainees arealso required to assist with fundraising. For more information, contact NSRI Jef-

freys Bay Station Commander RieghardJanse van Rensburg at 071 896 6831.

BYE-BYE Botox and facelifts - French colla-gen drink is taking South Africa by storm!Collagen Lift™ Paris is a daily collagen

drink that is easily absorbed by the body andhas been clinically proven in trials inGerma-ny and France to increase collagen densities, reduce wrinkles by up to 50% and increasethe skin’s elasticity and hydration.Collagen Lift™ Paris is further enhanced

with Mediterranean seaweed extract and Vi-tamin C, making it a potent source of anti-ag-ing collagen, minerals and antioxidants.Collagen is a critical component of skin

providing structure and elasticity to keepskin looking plump and youthful. With age, collagen breaks down and over time thebody’s capacity to re-generate collagen redu-ces - a doublewhammy for aging skin.Duringthe first fiveyears ofmenopause, womenmaylose as much as 30% of their skin collagen.By using Collagen Lift™ Paris, women can

now replenish lost collagen from within andwithout using external products which mostoften donot penetrate the skin deeply enoughto be really effective. Now there is no need forinjections or surgerywhich are both painfuland invasive.Trials in South Africa

have proven the same re-sults as in Europe. Testi-monials from South Afri-can women who also par-ticipated, were thatwithin threeweeks, theirskin was brighter andtheir faces smoother. Aft-er eight weeks, there wasan all-round, marked im-provement in the skin onthe face and neckwith re-duced lines, plumped outeye area and fewer crow’sfeet.Collagen Lift™ Paris

comes in a user-friendly ampoule to be takenin the morning diluted in water or juice andpackaged in a one-month’s supply. The prod-uct is palatable and compared to most otherface care regime, is a simple one-step processwith incredible long lasting results.Collagen Lift™ Paris is available online

andat selectedClicks andbeauty salons coun-trywide for R680 per box of 28 ampoules (onemonth supply).Formore information, visit their Facebook

Knitting for a good cause

The clicking of knitting needles and chatter of enthused St Franics Knit Wits ladies filled theair at the Viking Bakery on July 18 all in celebration of Mandela Day and to give backto the community in times of disasters such as fires or floods. Some 200 squares wereknitted, crocheted or donated on the day.
