ALTHOUGH blazing flames stoodmeters high and residents hardlymanaged to stop them in their de-structive tracks only a few steps

away from their back doors, the Kouga Mu-nicipality is adamant that there was no realdanger to nearby houses.

And even though not a single fireman wasin sight near the houses that suffered dama-ges to their boundary walls, gardens, roofs,Wendy house and other outside furniture, themunicipality is confident that their firemenwere completely in charge of the situation.Residents, however, believe that if it was

not for the swift reaction and hard work ofpolice members, the situation would withoutdoubt have turned into a disaster.At approximately 15:15 on Friday a huge

fire broke out on the empty area next to theJeffreys Bay Golf Course threatening housesin Dogwood, Myrtle and Broom streets. Theflames were fuelled by gale force winds gust-ing up to 68km an hour.According to municipal spokesperson,

Mfundo Sobele, the Kouga Fire Departmentwas despatched to the area as soon as theywere informed about the fire by the JeffreysBay Police. “There was no real danger to thehouses and our firemen were in charge of thesituation,” he said. “They managed to bringthe fire under control at about 16:15. It is sus-pec-ted that the firewas caused by a road userwho dumped a cigarette butt along the way.The dry vegetation caught a sparkwhich thenled to the runaway fire.”Broom Street residents say that firemen

might have been controlling the fire from themiddle, but therewas not one fireman or even

a red light in sight on the edges of the firewhich came up to their house.Susan Fourie said residents stood united in

the fight against the fire. “Residents usedwhatever they could to extinguish the fire;

blankets, towels, hose pipes etc.“Three police men jumped over my back

wall and started diverting the fire from near-by houses. If it was not for them, I would havesuffered much more damage than a black

back wall, soot and a terrible smell clingingto everything.“I do not even want to think what could

have happened if thesemen did not showup.”Continued on page 2

AFTER yet another accident in just overa week, residents are now demanding thatspeed humps be erected in NoorsekloofRoad.

This road is fast gaining a reputationfor being a dangerous road, despite thefact that there are no major bends or ob-stacles that could increase the risk of acci-dents.

Eight days after Jan-Willem van Heer-den, former manager at Potter’s Place,rolled his Audi A3 in Noorsekloof Road,the driver of a black VW Golf lost controlof his vehicle and ploughed through a walland gate.

According to police spokesperson PetraEls, the accident occurred at approxi-mately 02:50 on Sunday. The driver sus-tained minor injuries.

“This is the third accident this year onthat specific road.”

Earlier this year a taxi driver lost con-trol over his fully loaded vehicle, drove

through a boundary wall and hit the build-ing of Leanné Cilliers Optometrists withsuch an impact that a part of the buildinghad to be rebuild. Several taxi occupantssustained minor to serious injuries.

According to municipal spokespersonMfuno Sobele, Noorsekloof Road is not ahigh accident zone. “It is unfortunate thatwe have had accidents, as we are con-vinced that we have enough measures inplace to curb speeding - there are four stopsigns in the street.

“We have received requests for speedhumps by residents in the area and theseare still part of our considerations, butthere are technical and traffic mattersthat we need to take into consideration.This include heavy duty vehicles whichbattle to drive over speed humps uphill.

“We will however increase our visibili-ty, including imposing speed fines forroad rules transgressors and doing spe-cial operations in the area. We need towork on human behaviour in as far asspeeding and reckless driving on thatroad is concerned.”

ACCORDING to resident Denise May, this isthe third fire she had experienced since 2004.“Building and garden rubble are piled up tosuch an extent on the open erf bordering myhouse, as well as several other houses, thatit was impossible for the fire department tocome even close. If the erf was not so over-grown and full of rubbish, the fire would nothave been this bad.

“The previous two times I helped fight thefire, but this time I decided that I’ve hadenough. I picked up my dog, took my laptop, gotinto my car and drove off. On my return laterthat afternoon, I could see just how close the firecame to my house. Several of the trees in myback garden were scorched by the flames.

“I was not the only one who evacuated myhouse.” She continued that everything in herhouse was full of soot. “The bath, curtains,bedding and even the clothes in the cupboardswere covered in soot. Since Saturday morn-ing, I have been washing non-stop, and still

everything smells like something that hasburned. Some things are beyond salvaging,”she said on Monday.

Another resident said this is not an isolatedincident. “In the 22 years that I have been liv-ing in Broom Street, this is the sixth fire Ihave experienced,” said the resident.

According to DA Ward 8 councillor, DavidAldendorff, he requested as far back as August2012 that the municipality provide an adequatefirebreak. “This was however without any suc-cess. Over the years I have written several let-ters to the municipality informing them aboutthe fire hazards the vast overgrown erven inWavecrest pose, but just like my request in2012, this has fallen on deaf ears.”

Sobele said: We are looking into the matterand are in consultations to come up with thebest solution. We further would like to urgecommunity members, including some resi-dents in the affected area, to desist fromdumping their garden waste onto open spacesnext to their properties as this contributes tofire hazards.”

KOUGA residents are encouraged to usewater sparingly.

Kouga Executive Mayor Booi Koeratsaid that while the dams were still rela-tively full, the levels were declining. Sav-ing water now would help to prolong theavailability of the current water supplyuntil the next rainfall season.

“This is in essence a precautionary callon residents,” he said. “Our request isthat residents aim to reduce their waterconsumption by at least 10%. This willhelp to delay the introduction of water re-strictions.”

He said that no punitive measureswould be taken against consumers whouse water excessively at this time.

“Should the dam levels continue drop-ping, however, there is a good chance thatthe Nelson Mandela Metro will introducewater restrictions again. Since we draw wa-ter from the same storage dams, Kougawould then have to follow suit,” he ex-

plained. The dams levels, as measuredmidSeptember, areKouga 93,2%,Church-ill 73,2%, Impofu 84,6% and Loerie 33%.

Five easy ways to save water1. To check for possible leaks, close alltaps on your property and check your wa-ter meter to see if it shows that water isbeing used.2. Never pour water down the drain whenthere may be another use for it such aswatering the garden or for cleaning.3. Do not use running water to thaw meator other frozen foods. Defrost food over-night in the refrigerator or use the defrostsetting on your microwave.4. Don’t let water run while shaving orwashing your face. Brush your teeth firstwhilewaiting for thewater to gethot, thenwash or shave after filling the basin.5. Avoid flushing the toilet unnecessarily.Dispose of tissues, insects and other simi-larwaste in the trash rather than the toilet.

Savewater to prolong supply

THE R42.6 million upgrade of the JeffreysBay Waste Water Treatment Works is setto be completed within the next fewweeks.

Upgrading of the old plant to increaseits capacity from 3Ml/day to 8Ml/daystarted in May 2011. “The works are al-ready in operation, but construction isnot yet completed. The contractor is stillon site attending to the last few details.These should be finalised within the nextfew weeks,” said portfolio councillor forInfrastructure, Planning and Develop-ment Patrick Kota.

According to Kota the upgrade was nec-essary to increase the capacity of theworks so that new housing developments- both government and private - could beaccommodated.

“The original plant was developed dur-ing the 1980s. Since then, Jeffreys Bay hasgrown significantly and basic serviceshave been rolled out to previously disad-vantaged areas,” said Kota.

“The sewerage flow increased as thetown grew. Eventually the plant was oper-ating beyond its design capacity, at whichstage the upgrade became a critical neces-sity.”

Apart from residents benefiting fromthe upgrade since all sewage is eitherdumped or pumped to the works, therewere also positive economic spin-offs.

“At least 30 locals were employed by thecontractor for the entire construction pe-riod. Local businesses also benefited assome of the materials; for example sand,aggregate and other building supplies;were produced locally,” said Kota. “Threepermanent positions had also been creat-ed for the operation of the plant.”

Sewerage upgrade nearscompletion

This coming weekend learners will havethe chance to show off their flair and racingskills at the annual Supa Quick Trolley Race.

Supa Quick Humansdorp and Jeffreys Bay,in conjunction with the Algoa Rally Club’s an-nual Fountains Mall Rally, will hold their an-nual Trolley Race at Fountains Mall at 10:30on October 12.

Contestants will feel like true racers, as theevent will take place on the actual race trackset out by the Rally Club. The race course is1km longs and learners will compete in threegroups: Grade 1 - 4, Grade 5 - 7 and Grade 7

- 12. Each team must consist of eight membersand the track will be completed in a relay of200m per two members.

According to Adel Nagel from Supa Quick,the trolleys will be provided by Pick ’n PayinFountainsMall. “Each teamwill get 15min-utes to decorate their trolley before they taketheir places at the starting line. During therace the trolleys are not allowed to touch oneanother.”

Great prizes will be up for grabs on the day.The school with the most entries will receiveR5 000 in cash. There will also be various priz-es for the winners of each group and for thebest decorated trolley, as well as individualprizes.

Entry closes on October 7. The cost is R40per team, which will go towards communityprojects.

Why approach an attorney to draft yourwill? An attorney has the necessary know-ledge and expertise to ensure that your willis legally valid and complies with your wish-es. An attorney can also advise you on anyproblem which may arise with regard to yourwill. Often a will is not valid because the per-son who drafts it does not have the necessarylegal knowledge to ensure that the require-ments of the law are met.

What could happen to your estate if you diewithout a valid will?

If you die without leaving a valid will, yourassets will be distributed according to theprovisions of the Intestate Succession Act.The provisions of this Act are generally fair

and ensure that your possessions are trans-ferred to your spouse and children.

But, the following problems may arise ifyou die without leaving a will:.Your assets may not be left to the personof your choice..It can take a long time to have an executorappointed. The executor who is appointedmay be somebody you may not have chosenyourself..There could be extra and unnecessarycosts..There could be unhappiness and conflictamong members of your family becausethere are no clear instructions on how to dis-tribute your assets.

En tog, het ek net verlede maand R15 vir een van die nuttigstevoorwerpe in en om die huis betaal: ’n stewige grasbesem.

Mooi netjies met draad en spyker aanmekaargesit, die stok reguiten spierwit sonder sy bas. Die besem gaan my ’n hele paar maandedien - dit weet ek uit ervaring. Dit is uit dié einste ervaring dat ekweet dat geen ander besem, nie eens ’n stofsuier, kan kers vashouby ’n grasbesem wanneer dit by honde- en kathare op matte kom nie.Met ’n tjoef hier en ’n tjaf daar, word baie take behendig met só ’nbesem afgehandel.

Dié grasbesems word al vir meer as twee eeue deur die inwonersvan Die Berg in Kruisfontein net buite Humansdorp gemaak.

Booi Yake (70), beter bekend as Bambi, maak die grasbesems alsolank hy kan onthou. “Ons familie maak die besems al van die 1800saf. Die kuns word van die een geslag na die ander oorgedra, en ditsal nog seker vir honderde jare so wees.

“Ons staan vroegoggend op om die gras hoopop in die berg te gaanpluk. Dit is nog groenerig, maar na twee dae in die son - of tweeweke as dit winter is en die sonnetjie skugter is om gesig te wys- dan is dit kurkdroog en gehard.”

Hy werk vinnig en behendig terwyl hy stap vir stap verduidelikhoe die besem aanmekaar geslaan word.

Hy vat net die regte hoeveelheid gras raak, bondel dit saam, sit’n ysterring om en bind dit baie stewig met tou vas. Die tou wordflink met ’n staalnaald deur die gras gewerk en stewig vasgemaak.Dan vir die tweede tou.

“Ons besems is twee- of driedraad om seker te maak dit val niegou uitmekaar nie,” sê hy. Die oortollige riet aan die bo- en onder-kant van die tou word daarna in ’n reguit lyn afgesaag.

Hy vat ’n lang gladgeskuurde stuk stok, kerf die een punt spitsen stamp dit dan in die riet in; net daar waar die tweede tou gespanis, om te verseker dat die stok daar bly sit totdat die besem uitge-dien is. “Dan moet ’n mens ook ’n spyker deurkap,” sê Bambi terwylhy die daad by die woord voeg. “Nou sal gras-se-kind in der ewigheidnie losval nie.”

Netjies afgerond, staan hy trots na sy handewerk en kyk.Ek toets die besem net daar; dit is asof ’n mens sommer jou sorge

VVeeee jjoouussoorrggeewweeggmmeett ddiiéébbeesseemmss Kouga opens itsdoors to studentsKOUGA Municipality hosted 37 stu-dents from the Nelson Mandela MetroUniversity (NMMU) on an educationaltour last week.

The tour by second-year Environ-mental Health students is part of a jointannual programme of the universityand municipality. It offers students afirst-hand experience of the real worldthey will encounter as health inspec-tors.

Municipal staffers showed the stu-dents and their lecturers operations atvarious sites, including, the watertreatment plant, sewerage plant andwaste site at Humansdorp.

The youngsters were also given ataste of processing plants, with AbalobiFishers and Woodlands Dairy openingtheir doors. Other places visited werethe child care centre, Noah’s Ark, thefood premises of Pick ‘n Pay in JeffreysBay and a dairy farm.

The municipality’s EnvironmentalHealth Practitioners guided the contin-gent throughout the tour.

Welcoming the students and lecturers,Kouga Municipal Manager Sidney Fadisaid the municipality was proud to con-tribute to the university’s programmesand the advancement of learning.

“We hope that we will continue ourrelationship for years to come. Kougais known as the ‘Place of Abundance’and we trust that you will come back toour area to explore what Kouga has tooffer,” he said.

NMMU Epidemiology lecturer Che-ryl Swanepoel said Kouga offered inva-luable experience for the students aseach group they brought, went back asbetter students.

Kritzinger, wat sy staan agter ’n braai ken en weet hoeom ’n boereworsresep te vervolmaak, neem al vir 12 jaarlank aan Checkers se gewilde Boerewors-kampioenskapdeel. En vanjaar het sy smaaklike boerewors-resep virhom ’n plek in die finaal by Sun City besorg.

Vir die eerste keer vertel Kritzinger dat dié wenworseintlik uit nood gebore is. “Toe ek in 1998 by Huis Formo-sa aangesluit het, het die ouetehuis ’n finansiële krisisin die gesig gestaar. Ek het daaroor gebid en het een aanddie visie gekry om die ouetehuis se eie slaghuis op diebeen te bring. So gesê, so gedaan. Die maak van my eieboerewors het deel geword van die slaghuis se geboortein Januarie 2000.

“Ek het verskeie wenke oor worsmaak by kenners indie ou en bekendeKook enGeniet-resepteboek gekry. Oordie jare het ek aan my resep geskaaf tot ek die perfektebalans tussen bestanddele gevind het.”

Kritzinger sê: “Enigeen kan ’n klomp speserye saam-gooi en boerewors maak. Maar ek ken presies die regtesamestelling, sodat een bestanddeel nie ‘n ander oor-heers nie.’’

Hy beklemtoon dat sy wors van gehalte uitgesoektestukke vleis gemaak word. “Ek het nog altyd geglo datworsmaak ’n delikate proses is. Ek sal nooit die gehaltevan my vleis verlaag nie en my vetinhoud is nooit meeras 20% nie. Dis nou maar wors.

“Die voorbereiding, tegniek, prosedure, gebruik vankwaliteitvleis en die regte speserye is van kardinale be-lang wanneer dit kom by die perfekte boerewors. Dietempo van die stopproses moet ook net reg wees. As jydie derm te vinnig of te stadig stop, kan dit ongewenstelugblasies veroorsaak. Verder moet die vleis die regtegrote gemaalword - ekgebruikgewoonlik ’nmediumsif.”

Noorsekloof, in the past two years, has be-come a main vein to the Mall, and the trafficflow has increased considerably. How manymore accidents need to take place before LawEnforcement will take action in order to slowdown the traffic?

In 9 years of residing here, I have not been

aware of any speed traps, and yet most folktravel at high speed and do not stop at the Dog-wood intersection..

A second danger zone is at the Pinnaquincurve in the road.

Noorsekloof Racing Track

THE large number of overgrown plots in Jef-freys Bay are a major cause of concern, yetthere has still been no serious response fromthe municipality to complaints from the resi-dents in Jeffreys Bay.

In May 2012, the municipal Communica-tions Officer, Mfundo Sobele, reported in thelocal media that due to financial constraintsthe municipality would make use of their ownstaff rather than private contractors to clearthese overgrown erven. This was followed bypictures in the local press of Kouga’s SeniorEnvironmental Health Practitioner RoderickMintoor and his colleagues receiving safetyand bush clearing equipment to the value ofR70 000, while the Executive Mayor Booi Ko-

erat confirmed a task force of 20 memberswould be employed to assist in sorting thismatter out.

Since then nothing has materialised. TheStanding Committee report dated 30 July 2013by the Director of Social Services JapieJansen is a sad litany of lame excuses as towhy the operation failed and is another exam-ple of poor management and wasteful expend-iture.

In the meantime, there are more than 110vacant overgrown plots that urgently requireattention and the ratepayers are waiting foran answer from the municipality.DE AldendorffWard 8 councillor

Bicycle patrollers become the eyes and ears of the community looking for suspicious persons,vehicles, or any activity that may appear suspicious.

Having identified a suspicious person entering the area, they will monitor them and call forback-up from ADT Armed Response, should it be required.

They are in contact with the 24-hour ADT Control Centre.

While the patrol guards do not respond to alarms and are not permitted to enter your premises(they are not armed), they will notify the Control Centre of any alarm activations.

They may act as witnesses or scouts for the Armed Response Officers or SAPS.

Regular patrols mean quicker reaction times. This increases the risk of being caught andmakes it more difficult to commit the crime in the first place.

Being on a bicycle means that they can patrol places inaccessible by car. They are also able tospot people hiding behind bushes and trees at street level.

They will also discover oversights on the part of the homeowners e.g. open gates and doors,vehicles left open and dogs running in the street. The owners will be informed.

For true adventurers at heart, with an un-dying zest for off-road motorhoming, retiredcouple Paul and Maria Eberhard from AstonBay, life is a joyful journey with endless un-known places to be discovered and to beticked off their bucket list - and they chooseto tackle it in a TravelStar 4X4 motorhomenamed Monty.

Just returning from a 16 000km journeycrossing through Namibia, Botwana, Zimba-bwe and Mosambiek, the Eberhards is set toembark on yet another 17 000km journey withLalibela in Ethiopia as their destination -with a visit to Lake Tana, the Blue Nile Falls,Aksum, the hundreds of churches and a draftbeer at Wim’s Hollands House high on theirpriority list.

Along the way they will stop in Johannes-burg, Musina, Tanzania where people drivelike ‘maniacs’ and Kenya where a goat willbe slaughtered specially for them.

They will set off on the first leg of their 6month-long journey - travelling 500km a day- on October 4.

Already covering close to 500 000km of Afri-can roads and visiting Kenya four times, theyhave never been to Ethiopia.

“Our goal is to travel along the historicalroute of Ethiopia,” said Paul. “One of thehighlights of our journey will be to see MountKilimanjaro. We have been there before dur-ing winter times, but the mountain was al-ways covered in thick mist. We hope that sum-

mer’s luck will be on our side this time round.Another highlight we can’t wait for, is to seeall the people we have met on previous trips,as well as to experience the migration of thou-sands of Wildebeest in Musina.

“The most exciting part of travelling ismeeting all different kind of people. You nev-er know just who you might meet.”

Setting off on their journey, their first stopwill be at Olifantskop Pass where they will en-joy a nice cup of coffee - made with their ownNespresso Coffee Machine which never getsleft behind. According to Paul, this is the oneluxury they cannot do without. Second to thatis their bread machine.

“We try to pack as light as possible. We onlytake a limited amount of food with us, as welike to buy food as we travel. Furthermore,we only pack enough comfortable clothes forabout a week, as well as one or two smart out-fits. There is a washing machine on board ofMonty and, if necessary, we can buy clothesat most of the places we visit.

“This might be the last long-distance jour-ney for us.”

The prize was presented to her by AllAboardTravel. She alsowona trip toBali val-ued at R20 000. The 11 year-old surfer was inoutstanding form throughout the event andcaptured the SAu.13 Girls title for the secondtime along with the Oakley Highest HeatScore award and R3 000 for posting a heat to-tal of 18.75 out of 20. This included a near-per-fect 9.75 out of 10plus a 9.0 inherquarter-finalheat earlier today.

TheWestern Province claimed the covetedFreedom Cup for the provincial team accu-mulating the highest points at the 2013 Hur-ley SA Junior Champs which was completedin idyllic 1m to 1.5mwaves at theLowerPointon Sunday.
