FunctionFire dampers must function reliably. If there is a fire, the lamellae of the fire damper must open smoothly and correctly.Environmental influences such as heat, cold, dirt or dust must not impede the function of the lamellae. If used frequently – or indeed rarely – this correct opening must not be impeded. Jamming caused by corrosi-on, dirt or the influence of certain tempera-tures must be prevented.

Bearing with KS PERMAGLIDE® P10 plain bearing bushesKS PERMAGLIDE® P10 plain bearings, which are implemented in pairs, are an ideal solution for the bearing of the lamellae in fire dampers.The maintenance-free KS PERMAGLIDE® P10 plain bearings prevent the bearing from cor-roding and freezing solid, and prevent the lubricant from dripping out due to heat. The bearing clearance may not become too low, e.g. due to high temperatures, as this can lead to the lamellae becoming stuck. Fire damper Ventilation system

In damp environments, in particular, this sliding layer system provides outstanding protection against corrosion. Moreover, lead and PTFE are extremely non-absorbent. Absorption of the surrounding fluids with consequent swelling of the materials is prevented, as is chemical damage to inter-acting sliding partners. The result is dimen-sional stability and optimum corrosion protection during use.

Application descriptionIn normal operation, the lamellae of the fire damper are closed and are never opened, or if so, then very rarely. Fire dampers are installed in building venti-lation systems in order to prevent fire and smoke spreading via ventilation lines. In the event of fire, fire dampers are opened so that toxic fumes can be extracted. Fire dampers are sometimes mandatory as safety components according to § 14 of the German Model Building Ordinance (MBO). Fire dampers are also used for normal venti-lation in building technology.

Product usedKS PERMAGLIDE® cylindrical plain bearing bushing, type PAP … P10/P11.The KS PERMAGLIDE® materials P10 (with steel back) or P11 (with bronze back) are used, depending on the aggressiveness of the gas or liquid.

FunctionIsolating valves regulate by increasing and decreasing the flow of liquids and gases in pipelines. The installed plain bearings are constantly exposed to the influence of che-micals and high or extremely low tempera-tures. Liquids cause constant vibrations on the valve, amongst other things. The bearing must not become stuck due to corrosion or the influence of certain temperatures. If used frequently – or indeed rarely – the function of the isolating valve must not be impeded. The bearings are no longer acces-sible once installed, and so maintenance-free bearings are required.Isolating valves act as safety switches: if the pressure is too high, the isolating valve opens. If a section of the pipeline is leaking, the isolating valve closes.

Bearing with KS PERMAGLIDE® P10/P11 plain bearing bushesThe shaft journal and the valve disc are mounted with KS PERMAGLIDE® P10 or P11 plain bearing bushes. The P10 and P11 plain bearings do not be-come electrostatically charged, as they act as electrical conductors after running-in. The isolating valves can also be used in environ-ments where there are explosive gases.

Function Pneumatic cylinders are used for the drive of linear movements, e.g. in conveyor technology and in engineering. Pneumatic cylinders are either single-acting or double-acting. The force of the piston rod thus acts in one or in both directions on the axle. This means that the cylinder can be used to generate a pushing force or a pulling force. The use of compressed air can lead to jerky movements and vibrations.

Bearing with KS PERMAGLIDE® P20 plain bearingsIn pneumatic cylinders, KS PERMAGLIDE® P20 plain bearing bushes are used as spigot bearings for the piston rod. The plain bearings are sealed and initially lubricated with grease.

The plain bearings are designed with oil distributing pockets in the sliding surface. This guarantees the appropriate distribution of lubricant over the entire service life. Lubrication ensures a low and constant friction coefficient and enables smooth linear movement. The bearing also provides a high level of guidance accuracy under changing operating conditions. The structure of the P20 makes it ideally suited to this application. High lateral forces, significant vibrations and sometimes high speeds act on the bearing position.

With its extreme stress potential and distinct damping characteristic, the P20 constantly maintains its function as a precise spigot bearing.

Description of materialKS PERMAGLIDE® P20 is a low-maintenance, leaded bearing material with a high performance. It is designed for grease-lubricated or liquid-lubricated applications. This composite, multi-layered material excels through its high rigidity, durability and resistance to oscillation and vibration. These characteristics are largely achieved by a sliding layer system made of polyvinylidenfluoride (PVDF), polytetra-fluoroethylene (PTFE) and lead. The wear-resistant material has already proven itself many times in industry.

The standard P20 version features oil distributing pockets as per DIN ISO 3547. The bearings are provided ready to install for recommended connection-design installation dimensions. Also available are versions with a different wall thickness, suitable for rework when installed, or with a smooth sliding surface for hydrodynamic applications.

FunctionGear pumps are used in many applications to deliver liquids (media) or as a force- transmitting drive for hydraulic motors.The gear pump delivers the medium evenly from the intake side (intake), through the gears and to the thrust side (exhaust). Among other applications, gear pumps are used in vehicles as a fuel pump, oil pump or coolant pump. The chemical industry uses gear pumps to deliver organic and inorganic chemicals. Within construction machinery and agricultural machinery, gear pumps are used as a drive for hydraulic motors, for example.

Bearing with KS PERMAGLIDE® P10 plain bearing bushesKS PERMAGLIDE® P10 plain bearings are used as the main bearing for the gear shafts in gear pumps. A low operating bearing clearance is essen-tial for the high build-up of pressure and for low gear-pump leakage. To ensure a fault-free hydrodynamic operating state, the plain bearings must exhibit a bearing clear-ance tailored to the operating medium. The plain bearings come into direct contact with the operating medium. Aggressive media may be used, depending on the applica-tion. The plain bearings must therefore offer high resistance to abrasion, good resist-ance to erosion, chemical compatibility and low swelling tendency.

KS PERMAGLIDE® P10 plain bearings meet these requirements. The excellent dry- running behaviour of KS PERMAGLIDE® P10 plain bearings also ensures a low level of wear in the mixed friction operation that occurs when the pump is switched on and off.

FunctionMost wind turbine systems have a horizontally-mounted 3-blade rotor. The wind causes the rotor blades to rotate. The mechanical rotary motion is transferred from the rotor hub to the rotor shaft. The low speeds of the rotor are converted at

a ratio of 1:25 by a gearbox for generator operation. The rotor shaft is installed in the hollow shaft of the gearbox in the input stage. The rotor shaft and hollow shaft are connected on one side and rotate synchronously. The rotor shaft twists as a result of the strong alternating stresses. This leads to micro-movements on the guide parts. Such strained contact points are usually subject to tribo-chemical corrosion.

FunctionMost wind turbine systems have a horizontally-mounted 3-blade rotor. The wind causes the rotor blades to rotate. The mechanical rotary motion is transferred from the rotor hub to the rotor shaft and

is converted by the gearbox for generator operation. In order to take full advantage of the wind, the nacelle and rotor blades are continually adjusted. The rotor blades are mounted in the hub so that they are rotatable and are adjusted hydraulically using a push rod. The push rod must not be bent and must be guided using damping because of permanent vibrations.

Bearing with KS PERMAGLIDE® P20 plain bearing bushesThe linear spigot bearing of the push rod is realised using two low-maintenance KS PERMAGLIDE® P20 plain bearings. The plain bearings are initially lubricated with grease, which ensures low adjusting forces and smooth guiding. Thanks to the high wear resistance of the KS PERMAGLIDE® P20 material, the bearing clearance hardly changes, meaning precise adjustment is constantly guaranteed.

Bearing of feed shafts and rollers with KS PERMAGLIDE® P14 plain bearing bushesFranking and inserting require a great num-ber of precise movements, e.g. the addition and removal of envelopes and paper as well as paper folding. The bearing positions are mostly subject to an oscillating movement. Cylindrical plain bearing bushes made from unleaded KS PERMAGLIDE® P14 are used for transport shafts and rollers, for example.

The material is highly suitable for bearings due to its low wear and low operating bear-ing clearance.Due to weight and installation space, the sintered bronze bushes previously used in the application have been almost com-pletely replaced by slim KS PERMAGLIDE® plain bearing bushes. The all-plastic plain bearings previously used by a manufacturer are too easily worn and do not guarantee sufficient protection against fractures.

Application descriptionTubes, posts or guide rails are driven into the ground using pile-driving machines. Function Concrete placing booms can be extended in different ways depending on the operating conditions. When used outdoors on building sites, the articulated joints and their bearing positions are subjected to harsh conditions. Constant temperature fluctuations, moisture, dirt and chemically aggressive concrete or cement dust all influence the durability of the bearing positions. The booms must always function reliably. The bearing positions must therefore be robust, wear-resistant and always have a high freedom of movement in every boom configuration. Signs of corrosion after longer downtime periods must not lead to the articulated joints becoming stuck. The bearings must slide smoothly to place the concrete exactly, even when subjected to minor swivelling motions. The bearings must not fail prematurely due to abrasive sand or cement particles.

Bearing of the ink ribbon drive in matrix printers with KS PERMAGLIDE® P14 plain bearing bushesIf duplicates are required, e.g. for prescriptions at a medical practice or for delivery notes in logistics, matrix printers are still used.

Here, the ribbon is generally transported via a gear. The compact design of the printer requires miniature plain bearings with low space requirements. Lubrication has not been used in the application that was implemented as paper dust and grease can combine to form a paste. The friction value would therefore be disrupted and consequently, there would be a negative impact on the drive motor.

With dry running, however, it was possible to make the motor smaller. FunctionThe fifth-wheel coupling connects the trailer of a semitrailer with the towing vehicle with a secure but rotatable connection. When the towing vehicle is moving in reverse, the kingpin of the trailer is pushed into the coupling. A locking mechanism locks the fifth-wheel coupling automatically. It is now in travelling position. A breech wedge se-cures the kingpin. To uncouple, the locking mechanism is released with a hand lever. For the bearing in the fifth-wheel coupling, plain bearings must be robust and highly stressable and work smoothly even if the fifth-wheel coupling is not used frequently. FunctionClose coupling systems are used between the trailer and towing vehicle on semitrai-lers. The distance between the trailer and towing vehicle is extremely small during for-wards travel. The close coupling moves the trailer away from the towing vehicle by 500 mm in curves. The advantage over normal coupling systems is the longer loading area with the same total length.

The bridge is twisted in relation to the trai-ler in curves. The twisting of the bridge is transferred to the ring gear. The ring gear engages in a ring gear ring on the crank disc. The connecting rod is fastened with bearings on the trailer and on the crank disc. This means that the crank mechanism is adjusted in every curve. The trailer is moved backwards on linear guides.

Bearing with KS PERMAGLIDE® P20 plain bearing bushes and thrust washers In the specified application, KS PERMAGLIDE® P20 plain bearing bushes are used for the linear guide. There are two rigid shafts running on the trailer in two KS PERMAGLIDE® P20 plain bearing units each. The plain bearing bushes are pressed into the connecting rod. FunctionTo reach the engine under the cab for main-tenance work on utility vehicles, the driver‘s cab is tilted forwards. The pivoted joint on the driver‘s cab is fitted with two plain bearings for the swivel movement.

The pivoted joint must always work smooth-ly, even if it is not used frequently. The pivoted joint is constantly subjected to shocks and vibrations during travel. This means that there is a risk of tribocorrosion on the plain bearings.

KS PERMAGLIDE® P20 plain bearing bushes were installed in the application. Using the KS PERMAGLIDE® plain bearing bushes means that no tribocorrosion occurs.

A plain bearing is positioned on each side of the swivel axis. The plain bearing bushes were pressed into a needle bush for easy mounting. The plain bearings were lubricated prior to installation. The lubrication is sufficient for the entire service life. The sliding speed and temperature are negligible in this ap-plication.

FunctionIn storage power stations, water is pumped into higher-lying storage reservoirs using cheap night-time electricity. At energy demand peaks, the water is allowed to flow back down to drive a turbine. In the process, the turbine drives a generator to produce electricity. In order to set the op-timum operating point in the pump as well as in the turbine operation, swivel-mounted stator blades are fitted between the ring channel and impeller.

Bearing with KS PERMAGLIDE® P11 plain bearing bushesThe bearing for the stator blades are manu-factured with maintenance-free plain bea-ring bushes made from KS PERMAGLIDE® P11. This has eliminated the need for additional lubricant. High static compressions arising from the flowing medium permanently af-fect the bearing. In addition, there are high-frequency vibrations. The plain bearing has direct contact with the water. The material with bronze backing and PTFE sliding layer does not display any signs of corrosion. Similarly, tribocorrosion does not occur because the sliding metals are separated by the layer of PTFE. KS PERMAGLIDE® P11 does not absorb any water, allowing the

plain bearing to maintain its dimensions. Moreover, the high wear resistance always provides a constant operating bearing clearance, which would otherwise have a negative influence on the efficiency of the pump or turbine. The service life of bearings made of KS PERMAGLIDE® P11 is thus ex-ceptionally long, with costly maintenance intervals being reduced.

FunctionThe bearings in technical systems in a ma-ritime environment are usually quite a chal-lenge. The harsh operating conditions often place demand on the bearing system‘s efficiency many times over. A maintenance-free plain bearing with minimal effort requi-red to seal it is best suited in installation locations which are hard to reach.In order to eliminate the risk of water contamination, dry-running or media-only-lubricated bearings are permissible.Plain bearings fit these broad-ranging

loads best. Regardless of salt or fresh wa-ter, offshore or in hydroelectric plants. KS PERMAGLIDE® plain bearings can be used wherever there is need for a reliable and robust bearing.

Although the corrosion resistance of metal-plastic composite bearings must be classi-fied as lower than plastic plain bearings, KS Gleitlager uses two types of material speci-fically developed for outside use.The materials KS PERMAGLIDE® P11 and KS PERMAGLIDE® P147 feature corrosion resistance figures better than the classic metal-polymer plain bearing materials based on PTFE available from the compe-tition.

Piston pin bed in flood gates and dams with KS PERMAGLIDE® plain bearings Large gates on locks or dams stand firm against the water pressure. Heavy link chains are used to move the gates. The pis-ton pin bed in every link is fitted with a KS PERMAGLIDE® P11 bush. The pins are hard-chrome plated and finely polished, so that extremely high compression forces in the tensile direction with peaks of 320 N/mm2. Any arising axial forces are absorbed by 2 axial discs per chain link made of KS PER-MAGLIDE® P11. A rubber seal protects the bush from coarse contamination. The material with bronze backing and embedded solid lubricant is corrosion-resistant and maintenance-free. Maintenance work must be carried out on the chain only after 16 years due to the worn gaskets.

KS PERMAGLIDE® P147 complies with the salt spray test in accordance with DIN 50021 and has stood the test of time a million times over in auto-motive applications.

The bronze alloy containing phosphorous also improves the corrosion resistance as well as the thermal, mechanical and tri-bological properties. These are so-called wrought alloys that are resistant to stress crack corrosion and pitting corrosion-type attacks. They also offer good resistance to sea water.KS PERMAGLIDE® materials have extremely low absorption properties and therefore do not tend towards swelling.

FunctionMovable tables are used for equipping hydraulic presses. They enable the machine to be loaded and unloaded quickly. The mo-vable table consists of a workpiece holder mounted on a table. For loading, the table is pulled out and pushed back into the ma-chine with the workpiece once mounted.

Requirements for the bearings in movable tables• A slight plain bearing clearance is required

in order to guide the work table precisely and without canting. The slight plain bea-ring clearance means that a large portion of the stress from the pressing process is transferred to the frame via the plain bearings.

• In order to pull it out and push it in easily, the table must run smoothly in the guide for the long-term.

• The machine must withstand long periods of use with low maintenance requirements.

• To prevent the table from becoming too big, plain bearings with small dimensions are required.

• The costs for production and mounting should be as low as possible.
