Ku-ring-gai Council Riparian Species List

K. Harper, [email protected] November 2006, 2

Introduction

The purpose of this report is to provide a comprehensive list of local plant

species that are suitable for planting in shale and sandstone riparian zones within Ku-

ring-gai Council area. It aims to provide people with knowledge of riparian species as

well as highlighting other information relevant to the species requirements. This

information has been produced for Council’s reference purposes. All species

mentioned occur naturally within the Ku-ring-gai area.

The report was produced in consultation with Council’s staff and addresses a key

action identified from the Council’s Riparian Policy of December 2004.

A key point of this Policy was that the revegetation of “Local native vegetation

assemblages should be used that is capable of supporting the long term ecological

function of the site” (2004, Riparian Policy December, p 13)

Background

Information was gathered from Ku-ring-gai Council’s ‘Biodiversity Strategy

Adopted in May 2006’. It provides a flora species list current in the council area, this

information has been reviewed and cross referenced for accuracy.

Publications were also used to highlight information on the species discussed.

Personal communications were conducted with people relevant to the project,

including Mr David Wilks Technical Officer Biodiversity and Dr Ian Wright Principal

Environmental Scientist, employees of Ku-ring-gai Council. The reports reference list

contains a detailed summary of all sources used.

It is important to note that a number of differences between sources were identified.

The information that was consistent with the majority of publications was taken to be

the most accepted. Information from the World Wide Web was only accepted as

accurate if it was concurrent with other sources.

How to use this report

The comprehensive list produced, contains two species tables. The lists have

been arranged alphabetically by either common name or botanical name. The lists

note the habit of the species (appendix 1), moisture content required for the species to

grow (figure 1) and whether the plant grows on sandstone, shale or both. It provides

valuable information on the ability of the species to be propagated.

Propagation

All species can be propagated, with the exception of Ghania ercapodies.

(Lachlan, L 2006, pers. comm., Ku-ring-gai Community Nursery)

It was noted that planting locally native species for landscape purposes can have

detrimental effects on the genetic diversity of the existing vegetation. Careful

consideration should be given to the possibility of planting non-indigenous, un-

invasive species in these circumstances.

The transferral of genetic material is becoming an issue within urban areas. Through

the destruction of ecosystems and the movement of plant material, flora is more

portable then previously. The genetics are combining, causing inbreeding and

outbreeding this in turn forces the gene pool to weaken. When genetically similar

plants become dominate the species becomes weaker and more susceptible to

diseases. Once the genetic integrity is lost it is extremely hard if not impossible to

restore.

Name Changes

Through the constant reclassification of botanical names information for some

species have been located under their new name change. Botanical names are correct

as of November 2006. The changes are:

• Leptospermum trinervium previously Leptospermum attenuatum4,

• Saropsis fastigiatus previously Restio fastigiatus,

• Rubus moluccanus var. trilobus previously Rubus hillii,

• Christella dentata previously Cyclosorus nymphalis,

• Trema tomentose previously Trema aspera.

Conclusion

This report provides council and its stakeholders with a useful tool to

understand native species suitable for planting along riparian zones in the Ku-ring-gai

area. To recreate natural riparian vegetation systems, staging of the planting would be

required. This is not crucial to achieve success but planning is required to restore the

diversity that occurs naturally, enhancing the quality of riparian areas in the Ku-ring-

gai area.

Ku-ring-gai Council Riparian Species List - Appendix 1

K. Harper, [email protected] November 2006, xxii

Appendix 1: Plant Classification Carnivorous Herb: The Carnivorous herbs ‘Possess special adaptations for trapping and digesting insects, presumed to be an evolutionary response to growth in waterlogged soils deficient in nitrogen.’ (Fairly, A & Moore, P, 2000) Drosera leaves have many fine hairs which produce a sticky fluid and acts as an insect trap. The sun reflects on this fluid hence the name ‘Sundew’. Climber: A climber is a plant that produces aerial roots, leaf stalks, tendrils, twining stems or suckers to support their long shoots that require support from another object.

Fern: A fern is a flowerless and seedless plant that reproduces by spoors. They have true roots from a rhizome and fonds that uncurl upward. Grass: One characteristic of grasses is their leaves having parallel veins. The junction of the blade and sheath often bears an erect fringe of hairs called the ligule and sometimes also earlike projections called auricles. Flowers are borne in reduced spikes called spiklets.

Ground cover: Ground covers encompass all herbaceous plants that form a low-growing carpet. They are the plants that grow in the lowest level of the vegetation strata. Herb: A herb is a upright plant lacking a permanent woody stem.

Lily: The plants in this family are monocotyledons and have linear leaves, mostly with parallel veins, and flower parts in threes. Mangrove: Mangroves are salt tolerant woody trees that grow in shallow intertidal tropical and subtropical coastal environments where the water has a high salt level.

Orchid: Orchids grow from an underground tuber which produce the leaves and flowers. They have a long period of dormancy and grow sparsely throughout their habitat. Many of the orchids are deciduous and require fire to flower. Orchids have highly evolved sexual organs which gives them their showy flowers. Orchids are among the largest and most diverse of the flowering plant (angiosperm) families. Palm: The palm is a flowering plant. They have an unbranched trunk crowned by large pinnate or palmate leaves.

Perennial: Perennial plants produce flowers and seeds more than once in its lifespan, usually living more than one year, this term is usually applied to herbaceous plants or smaller shrubs rather than larger trees. Rush: Rushes are monocots that usually prefer wet and moist environments. They are similar to Sedges.

Sedge: Sedges are grass-like plants usually having triangular, solid stems, three rows of narrow and pointed leaves. Usually the flowers are inconspicuous and born in spikelets. Shrub: A shrub is a low woody perennial plant it is distinguished from a tree by its multiple stems usually not more than 2 meters tall.

Small tree: Small trees are large perennial woody plants, usually taller than 2 meters but no more than 6 metres at maturity. They have secondary branches that are supported on a single main stem or trunk. Tree: Trees are large perennial woody plants, usually taller than 6 meters at maturity.
