PROJECT 101: ZERO PLASTICS

INTRODUCTION

Project Title Project 101: ZERO PLASTICS

Project Components

(a) Networking and Lobbying where the proponent will network and lobby with multi stakeholders such as public and private elementary and secondary schools in Ipil, the local government units (LGUs), barangay local government units (BLGUs), government national agencies, the non-government units (NGOs), civil society, and the media to come up with school policy (for the educational providers) and barangay or municipal ordinance for the community to ban the use of plastics.

(b) Capacity Building: Environmental Advocacy is the conduct of community orientation/visitation so that pilot areas—the elementary and secondary schools in Ipil will have a clearer picture of the status of climate change and its mitigation and adaptation measures, and

 Project Components (cont.)

(c)Education Advocacy refers to the massive IEC in the form of social media etc. to reinforce the core objectives of the advocacy and campaign and the outcome of this will come in the form of contest where pupils and students will use plastics to form lifesaving boats or water crafts to be donated to barangays in the flood prone area.

PROJECT 101: ZERO PLASTICS

Problem Statement

The use and proper disposal of plastics have been an increasing problem for schools across the Municipality of Ipil, Zamboanga Sibugay since the advent of convenient products made available as consumer goods.

In order to combat this, stronger information and education campaigns are needed to compare the advantages and disadvantages on the use and proper disposal of plastics including the possible ways of innovating disposed plastic to a product, and eventually ban the use of plastics in schools and community at large.

Community Needs

-Proper segregation of bio and non bio degradable wastes;-Good dumpsite location;-Provision of drainage canals and culverts;-Adopting school policy on the non-use of plastics, and;-An ordinance banning the use of plastics in the municipality.

Objectives

-To increase environmental awareness on the effects and impacts of climate change through Information Education Campaign (IEC).

-To conduct a school based/community based activity using plastics to create innovative products that can be used when disaster strikes.

-To lobby and network with community stakeholders and state actors to adopt a policy and ordinance banning the use of plastics .

Outputs

- Involve 6 volunteers to facilitate the conduct of IEC, networking and lobbying, actual “Zero Plastics Fun Day”

- Conduct 1 “Zero Plastics Fun Day”

- Involve 4 municipal /provincial officers (Municipal DRRM Officer, Municipal Mayor, Provincial DRRM, Provincial Planning Officer)

- Create 1 FB Fan Page for Project 101: Zero Plastics

- Publish 4 articles in my column “Politics, Places. People” at Sibugay Express (online copy at www.ceszy.wordpress.com)

- Create 12 big watercrafts made of plastics

- Donate 12 big water crafts to 4 flood prone barangays

- Have 4 (at least) schools adopt a policy on non use of plastics

- Lobby and pass an ordinance banning the use of plastics in the barangay (the least) and the municipal (the most)

LESSONS

Learned from:

Dr. Sue Russel that Global Citizenship is the contemporary way of doing things right faced with climate change. And that in the Philippines only 10% of sewage is treated or disposed of in a environmental way.

Specifically about? Pollution in her topic on Environmentalism and Ecological Action and the movie workshop “Sun Come Up”

How applied in your project? Knowing the extent of the damage, I stand firm to cause societal divide among businesses who supplies plastics in my municipality . I am going to push through lobbying a school policy and an ordinance banning the use of plastics in the community. In this way, I can reduce locally generated pollution.

How innovative is your project?

There has never been a move in my municipality on banning the use of plastics so mine would be the first with a twist- also advocating that plastic bottles can be used to make cost-efficient watercrafts.

HOW DO YOU ENSURE SUSTAINABILITY?

Community Partners : Schools

Adopting a policy in school connotes sustainability of my campaign.

Community at Large

A municipal ordinance in place will forever sustain my campaign in banning plastics not just in schools but the municipality at large.
