and reduce costs, it’s human factors that will enable us to fully integrate our supply chains and enable
differentiation.”

Accelerating the transition from collaborative robots to robot workmates
Collaborative robots
Tasked with a dangerous, repetitive or stressful operation
Robot workmates
Also expected to understand when human operators are stressed or tired,
and adapt to them at different levels

To favor the acceptability and trust of robots as workmates:
- natural and intuitive robot programming approaches and
interfaces, which do not require expert knowledge [TOPIC 1]
- human intention and human action recognition processes are
of the utmost importance to adapt to the operator’s actions as they unfold [TOPIC 2]
- robot motions and gestures should be not only safe but should
also be aimed at enhancing human trust, following, e.g., bio-
inspired patterns [TOPIC 3]
- robot behaviors and the communication between humans and
robots should adapt to an operator’s cognitive and physical capabilities, as well as incipient fatigue and stress, by sharing
autonomy accordingly and supporting the operator when
needed [TOPIC 4]

Exoskeletons for industrial applications
23Maria Pia CAVATORTA L’ergonomia nella fabbrica intelligente – le nuove tecnologie a supporto dell’uomo
POLITECNICO
DI TORINO
Exoskeletons aim at reducing two of the main biomechanical risk factors
for MSDs:
- High forces/ Significant effort: power tasks, as well as high precision
tasks (co-contraction effort)
- Awkward postures: muscle contraction but also the proximity to joint
limit in terms of range of motion (tendon deformation and potential
compression of soft tissue)
What tasks and which operators could be benefitted the most?
Researchers agree that the efficiency of an exoskeleton regarding the
reduction of MSDs risks is highly-task dependent

in-respect-to-niosh/
Empirical research conducted by Laevo in cooperation with TNO
Muscle activity of the lower back muscles in an bent-over position
experienced an average decrease of 40%
Expert opinion 1: Relationship between muscle activity and pressure on the
spinal nerves (compressive forces) is 90%. Pressure on the back will then
decrease by 90%*40% =36%;
Safe load on the back 3400/(1-0.36) = 5300N, increase by a factor of 1.56
The NIOSH equation for the situation in which the Laevo is being worn becomes:
RWL = 36kg * HM * VM * DM * AM * FM * CM
Expert opinion 2: decrease of approximately 15% of the pressure on the spinal
nerves. Therefore 3400/(1-0.15) = 4000N, with a multiplication factor of
4000/3400 = 1.18
RWL = 27kg * HM * VM * DM * AM * FM * CM
RWL = 23kg * HM * VM * DM * AM * FM * CM
