Testing Season is Upon Us

Over the course of the next two months, our students will be taking important tests that can affect: their graduation status; their ability to earn college credit; as well as our school report card. We are so

appreciattive of the dedicated work our teachers have put into preparing our students to excel on these tests. In addition, we appreciate the collaboration and communication we have with parents to reinforce

those preparations at home. Finally, we are proud of our students as they begin to take the tests. We have no doubt they will put their best foot forward and will achieve to their fullest potential. We will make every effort to effectively communicate with you regarding the tests over the next several months and invite you

to contact us as you have questions/concerns.

Great Things Going On At East!

East Artists Bring Home National Awards!

The Lakota East Art Department is pleased to announce that Lauren Wilson and Mackenzie

Robinnete have earned National Silver Medals in the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards of 2017.

Lauren and Mackenzie have been identified by panels of creative professionals as the most

talented young artists in the nation. This year, more than 330,000 works of art and writing were

submitted. Only the top 1% were recognized at the national level.

Peer Tutoring ROCKS!

Students continue to improve their study skills in CP US History! On a recent block day, six

tutors shared their skills and imparted their knowledge to 15 students looking to improve their

test scores and sharpen their study skills. Students report that both tutors and students

seeking help benefit from peer tutoring. Tutors study ahead of time to prepare for tutoring, and

they earn extra credit by tutoring. It helps them develop the skill of explaining historical

developments and gives them leadership skills, too. Those seeking help earn higher

grades. It's a win-win in peer tutoring! Special thanks to teacher Jen Reid for coordinating this

great opportunity!

Career Readiness Academy Holds Mock Interview Day

A big shout out to all the mock interview volunteers and students who participated in Mock

Interview Day. All Academy students had the opportunity to interview with one of the nine

mock interview volunteers. Each student received feedback about their interview as well. The

CP Physics Students Showcase Their Creativity

Students in Craig Gleason's CP Physics Classes recently showcased their creativity by

creating Rube Goldberg Machines. According to Wikipedia, a Rube Goldberg machine is a

deliberately complex contraption in which a series of devices that perform simple tasks are

linked together to produce a domino effect in which activating one device triggers the next

device in the sequence.

Congratulations to our Singing Thunderhawks, under the direction of Becky Huddilston and

Jocelyn Hardy and our Instrumental Thunderhawks, under the direction of Rob Tanis and

Jessica Patton nominated for optimism by

Kevin Engel! Ten Lakota East Ensembles recently took part in OMEA Adjudicated Competition

and ALL earned SUPERIOR RATINGS! This qualifies the ensembles for State Competition

this Spring!

Theater Students Master Shakespeare from an Expert

Students in the Freshman Theater Class recently worked with a professional actor from the

Cincinnati Shakespeare Company. The theater classes are working on a project to present at

the Shakespeare Festival in April. The actor came to help students work on the project as the

community "teaching artist".

Link Leaders Welcome Familiar Faces to Speak on Leadership

In an on-going commitment to continue to strengthen their leadership skills, Link Leaders at

the Main Campus have welcomed several special guest speakers this year. Pictured below is

a recent visit from Dr. Greg Finke, Principal at Independence Elementary. Other special guest

have included: Interim Lakota Superintendent, Robb Vogelmann; Hopewell Junior Principal,

Jeff Rouff; and Champions for Change Coordinators, Aisha Moore and Dr. Monique Johnson.

We are always looking for great volunteers to come and speak to our students. If you are

Science Olympiad Qualifies for STATE

The Lakota East Science Olympiad team recently competed in the SW Ohio Regional

tournament. Besting perennial powerhouses such as Walnut Hills, Wyoming, Sycamore and

St X, the Lakota East team finished second and received an invitation to advance to the state

tournament April 1! Congratulations to the team members and coach Craig Gleason!

AP Biology Students Welcome Local Doctors

AP Biology classes recently welcomed Dr. Lee and Dr. Ownens (parents of senior Winston

Owens). Drs. Lee and Owens donated their time and expertise in giving a talk on “What it

takes to be a medical doctor”. The tangible presentation was appreciated by our future

medical professionals and enjoyed by all.

Lakota East Freshman Takes Home Prestigous Honor

Congratulations to Lakota East Freshman, Brandon Khounesombat, on placing 2nd in his

division at his first ever Cincinnati Braille Challenge. The Braille Challenge is the only national

reading and writing contest in braille.

As a reminder, there will be pre-test and test activities on Thursday, March 16 and Tuesday, March 21.

Your student has faced a rigrous course of study throughout this school year which have prepared them for these assessments. We

have no doubt our students will do a great job and will put forth their best efforts on these important assessments.

As parents, please help support our students by providing them with positive thoughts, ensuring they get a good night's sleep and

making sure they eat a well balanced breakfast each morning. We know working together our students will succeed!

Thunderhawk Theater Presents.....Into the Woods

Son dheim’s gorgeous, well-known music combines with the twisted fairy tales of the Brothers Grimm in this

dramatic musical. All of your favorites are there, Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, Jack and his beanstalk, Rapunzel, Sleeping Beauty, and Snow

White, but they are in the dark woods of the Brothers Grimm. A childless Baker and his wife find out that their family has been cursed. The witch

next door reveals the curse and poses a challenge to get the curse reversed. They are to find a cow as white as milk, a cape as red as blood, hair as

yellow as corn, and a slipper as pure as gold. Their journey takes them through the woods and through the darkness of the human heart.

Join us at Lakota East High School’s Liberty Theatre for a trip Into the Woods. Show times are:

the recommendation with this show is that if you have small children, stay for the first act, and leave at intermission, while everything is at a “happy

ending.” During the second act, the giant takes her revenge on the fairy tale characters, and things get scary.

SENIOR SCHOLARSHIP INFO

Did you know the Lakota East PTSO has SEVERAL scholarships available for Seniors to apply for? Information regarding the scholarships is

available via Naviance and applications are due by March 31. Don't miss your chance to apply for these great scholarships!

SENIORS......each year, Lakota East gathers scholarship data for reporting purposes and for class recognition. Any scholarship you are offered,

even if you do not plan to accept the award or attend the awarding college, can be noted in the Senior Award and Graduation programs. In order for

the information to be included, please bring in copies of your scholarship offer to Mrs. Lewis in the Guidance office no later than Friday April

7th. The copies MUST CONTAIN your name, the name and dollar amount of the award, and whether the scholarship is renewable or a one-time

award. Please note that individual dollar amounts are not published; East simply uses them for an overall scholarship amount for the

Class of 2017.

FREE COLLEGE S.A.F.E. CLASSES for SENIOR GIRLS

The West Chester Police Department offers a great self-defense class specifically designed for senior young women heading off to a campus

environment. The class focuses on self-confidence and empowerment that will aid in taking quick action when personal safety is at risk.

The class is being offered at Lakota East April 24th – 22th from 3:30 pm to 5:30 pm daily in the wrestling room at East Main Campus. Students can

LEADS WRITE CHALLENGE Writing Contest

Is your student a budding Shakespeare? Or the next J.K. Rowling? LEADS is excited to announce the Write Challenge writing contest for ALL

Lakota students K-12. This year's theme is RISK. Students can submit an essay, narrative, poem or all 3! Entries are due on March 31 and

must be submitted electronically in Microsoft Word format for grades 3-12 (entries in the K-2 categories may be handwritten and scanned if

necessary). The cover page may be a scanned image for all grades. Students and families can learn more about the Challenge at

Barb Bossu Volunteer Spirit Award

The District Parent Council (DPC) and the Lakota East PTSO are accepting nominations for recipients of the 2017 Barb Bossu Volunteer Spirit

Award. Honoring a volunteer at the district level and one from each of Lakota’s 22 buildings, the award commemorates a former parent volunteer and

Union Elementary PTA president, Barb Bossu.

The award was established in 1990 to commemorate Barb’s very special dedication to public education. The DPC determines the district winner and

a committee representing the Lakota East PTSO determines the school recipient. All honorees are recognized at a district-wide ceremony in April at

Lakota East High School.

BOOSTER BASH 2017

Tickets are still available for the 17th Annual Lakota East Booster Bash to be held at The Hamilton Elks Golf Club on April 1, 2017 from 7:00 -

11:00 pm. The LEHS Athletic Boosters is an organization responsible for raising money which is invested back into the LE Athletic Program by

keeping our school equipment and facilities up-to-date. Simply put, 'Keeping the Hawks in the Game.'

Nominate an Educator of Excellence

The nomination period for the Community Foundation’s annual “Educator of Excellence” awards is now open. The deadline for submitting nominations is April 7.

Credit Means Recent Fee Reduction Impacts More Students Lakota junior high and high school students, who participated in a sport, band, or color guard this past fall, will be receiving a monetary credit to apply to any future Lakota school fee.

The credit follows the Lakota school board’s decision earlier this school year to lower such fees and the annual family cap. Rather than waiting until next school year, the district expedited the reduction for a more immediate benefit to students participating in winter and spring activities. The leading intent was to encourage increased participation in extra-curricular activities.

Since then, the district had time to analyze the financial impact of extending the fee reduction to students who participated in fall activities, too.

“The time lapse also helped us to work through the complexities of issuing credits in a fair manner to families where such variables as scholarships, the new family cap, and even multiple sports impacted the amount of their refund,” said Lakota Treasurer Jenni Logan.

The credit – amounting to $150 per sport for junior high students and $200 per activity for high school students – will show up as a credit in any eligible student’s EZ Pay account by the end of March. The credit can be applied to any school-assessed fee.

Seniors who will graduate in May 2017 and do not use the issued credit will be the only group to receive a refund.

To potentially expand the footprint of the reduction and promote increased participation in all activities for more students, the board continues to review and consider potential changes to the fee structure for other student opportunities, too.

Parents, Community Welcome at March Student Fanfare Events Lakota’s new series of community fanfare events is proving so popular with students and community members that all 22 schools are now on the schedule. The concept is a simple one: Line the school’s entrance and give students high-fives and words of encouragement as they’re filing into school. The new tradition aims to provide students with a visual display of all their supporters during times like testing and the start of a new semester, for example.

Nominations Sought for District Barb Bossu Volunteer Spirit Award

Nominations are being accepted now through March 27 for the 2017 district Barb Bossu Volunteer Spirit award. Everyone is encouraged to take a moment to consider nominating a volunteer who is making positive things happen in the district. It is your opportunity to demonstrate your appreciation for the volunteers that truly make Lakota a special place to educate children.

Barb Bossu was an enthusiastic parent volunteer and the Union Elementary PTA president at the time of her death. The Volunteer Spirit Award was established in 1990 to commemorate her very special dedication to public education by honoring a volunteer each year from every school as well as a district volunteer in the Lakota district. The recipient should represent a positive spirit of dedication toward the betterment of our children. All of these special volunteers are honored at a district-wide ceremony close to the end of the school year. Please click here for the 2017 Barb Bossu district nomination form. LEADS Parent Connect Educational Session: Understanding the Social-Emotional Needs of Children

Licensed Clinical Psychologist, Diane Frey will present to families about psychosocial components that sometimes “get in the way” of real life for families. She will provide some intervention strategies for families based on her private practice work with gifted children and her teaching work which has spanned over four decades in the field of gifted studies.
