A quick walk from downtown along the County Road 8 bridge underpass brings you to the northwest edge of Lanesboro, where the sun shines on the Bass Pond and gorgeous bluffs frame the view . Here you will find a spot for peaceful fishing, plenty of good parking, access to the Root River State Trail and 15 haiku poems . It is a good place to stop, read and contemplate on a haiku; written by folks ages 16 to 60+, representing a geographic region from Preston to Winona to Minneapolis to Stoughton, WI .

In 2014, as part of its Lanesboro Arts Campus initiative, the nonprofit organization Lanesboro Arts hosted a haiku poetry contest (three-line poetry in a five-seven-five syllabic pattern) and received more than 80 entries . Fifteen poems were selected for installation, by poets who are also teachers, visual and dance artists, a business executive, a psychology professor, a high school student, a speech pathologist, a professional horsewoman and a stay-at-home-mom . “I was very grateful for the poetry contest, because it provided a direction for my thoughts to wander during an action-packed afternoon of stacking blocks and coloring,” shared Marcy Van Fossen .

Working with the City of Lanesboro, the poetry signs were installed onto existing lampposts with the help of volunteers . At the entrance to the ‘Poetry Parking Lot’, the Welcome to Lanesboro Kiosk is topped with a stained glass trout made by artist Karl Unnasch . The ‘Poetry Parking Lot’ is an example of creative placemaking—the integration of art into social and municipal infrastructure of Lanesboro .

MEDALLION TOURBy Sara Baskett

A game of creative hide-and-seek and a social studies lesson all in one is at your fingertips here in Lanesboro . The Discover Sculpture Explore Lanesboro Medallion Walking Tour features 22 iron medallions found throughout town, portraying different facets of the rich character of Lanesboro on each medallion .

Maps can be found at the Lanesboro Visitor Center and on the Lanesboro Arts website: www .lanesboroarts .org . The self-guided tour will take you up church hill, around downtown, to the Bass Pond, the school, the historic dam and Sylvan Park .

The medallions were created beginning in 2001, supported by Forecast Public Artworks and led by Coral Lambert and Karl Unnasch, with community input and

donations of small items to be cast into iron . Five large medallion markers feature the themes of Culture, Nature, History, Community and Education .
