    1/1

    March 2013

Dear Dr Tribe, Mrs Scovell, Mrs Crossley Mrs McGuinness, Mr Allen, Mrs Gillies, Mr Alafaci and

    Dr Smith,

As a concerned member of the public, the centenary of the Lost Dogs' Home is an opportune time

to write to you to express my concerns regarding the manner in which the Home is operating.

I believe the LDH is manifestly failing in its mission of Compassion and Care. The Homes kill rates

are unacceptable. Last year alone, over 14,000 pets lives were lost in the face of proven

alternatives that other Australian shelters and worldwide are pioneering. Excuses from Dr Smith

over the years have including everything from the bizarre the introduction of the GST to the

    myth of pet overpopulation.

The truth I believe is that the Lost Dogs' Home practices killing of pets for convenience and profit.

The statistics for the 2011/2012 period show that 72% of unclaimed animals were killed 55% of

dogs and 80% of cats, among the highest in Australia, roughly 20% higherthan the previous year.

For an organisation boasting over $20 million in financial assets, this is a disgrace.

As Board members you must be aware of your indefensible kill rates and it is inexcusable that you

have abandoned your duty of care and allowed the Home to neglect its true missionto enhance

the welfare of dogs, cats and other animals. Unfortunately, your kill-rate statistics prove that you

    are failing woefully.

I demand that the Board fulfill its ethical duty to the animals in your care and implement the

    following immediate changes:

Dramatically increase the number of cat and dogs for available for adoption Develop a transparentand comprehensive community foster-care program which will

    encourage the public to volunteer

Develop a website showing all impounded lost and stray animals to assist owners toeasily identify and be reunited their pets, like a great many pounds already do

Extend opening hours over the weekends and public holidays Allow rescue groups access to dogs and cats who fail your behavioural and medical

tests, apart from irredeemably suffering or vicious pets

Stop killing for space Cease tendering for additional Council contracts until new policies and procedures are

implemented which will ensure a drastically improved save rate.

    I await your response.

    Yours sincerely
