Identifying Children withLearning Disabilities
* general definition = the term specific learningdisability means a disorder in 1 or more of the basicpsychological process involved in understanding or in
using language, spoken or written, which disorder maymanifest itself n the imperfect ability to listen, think, speak, write, spell, or do mathematical calculations.
etc ~We can identify students with learning disabilities
depending on how they are completing their class workand socializing with other students. Students with alearning disability like dyslexia or perceptional
disabilities have problems reading or completingassignments because of their inability to readcorrectly.
* Also sometimes students have physical disabilitiesthat can inflict and increase the chances of learningdisabilities

Information Processing Model The Information Processing Model (IPM)
describes learning as a series of componentsthat involve sensory stimulation/input,
processing/thinking and output or sharing ofwhat has been learned
This process/model shows how students gaina large amount of knowledge using their 5senses in a short amount of time and howthey obtain the information through practice, and their short and long term memory.
Some students cannot absorb information, process it and then recite it back, so thismodel helps students find a way to gathertheir information, practice it, store it in theirlong term memory and thats to the initialpractice they can retrieve it and recite itback just as they learned it.

4 major components of an IPM is input, output,
processing, and executive function

Primary Cause of LearningDisabilities
Although some people believe there is aprimary cause of learning disabilities, there isNOT one primary cause of a learningdisability.
When students were studied, many studentswith learning disabilities have identified someneurological differences and sensory deficitsassociated with their said learning problems.
Some believe there are some factors that
increase the possibility of having a learningdisability. The factors are *genetics *environmental factors from
inadequate prenatal health care toexposure to harmful substances

The Affects Sensory Memory, Short-term Memoryand Long-term Memory have on students with
Learning Disabilities *Sensory Memory- the ability to accommodate a
large amount of information for a short period oftime (2-3 seconds) and allows us to take in
information and interpret what we are seeing, hearing, tasting, smelling, etc.
Short-term Memory- temporarily storinginformation while simultaneously completing tasks;involves strategies for consciously storinginformation, such as rehearsal.
Long-term Memory- a way of storinginformation in the brain for future retrieval
*All three parts work together to help a studentabsorb information, reflect upon it with practiceand understanding and store it for when it isneeded. If any of these parts are not working totheir fullest potential then the student will havesome difficulties in learning, abstaining andpresenting new information.
