Time LimitThe team must complete the Presentation (including setup) in eight minutes or less.

Team BudgetThe Project requirement has no budget limit. However, the total value of the materials used in the Project Presentation at the tournament may not exceed $150US.

Approaching This ChallengeThis Challenge can be solved on many levels, ranging from the simple to the complex. We recognize that there are many different ways to be creative. Please approach this Challenge in the true spirit of Destination Imagination: try foremost to solve the Challenge. If you fi nd the intent or any of the details of the Challenge unclear, we encourage you to ask for a Clarifi cation. (See the Rules of the Road.) Remember—if it doesn’t say you can’t, then you can. However, if it says you “must” perform specifi c requirements, then those requirements have to be met.

1. The Intent of the Challenge: The team will design and carry out a Project that addresses a real need in a community. The team will research logos and jingles to develop a unique team-created Brand to assist with meeting the Project goal(s). At the tournament, the team will use theatrical techniques and a team-created Project Puzzle to highlight the Project and the impact it made on the community.

2. The team will choose a real community need. The community may be as large or small as the team chooses. The need may be anything the team identifi es as a real need.

3. The team will design and implement a Project that addresses the community need. The team should use innovative and creative approaches to solve the community need. At the tournament, the Appraisers will score the theatrical Presentation of the team’s Project. Scores will be based on the scoring criteria of the Challenge. The community need and the success of the Project are NOT scoring elements

for this Challenge. Team Projects will not be compared to each other.

4. The team must have at least one goal for the Project, but it may have more than one goal. The Project goal(s) should specify what the team plans to accomplish.

5. Community Partner: The team may enlist Community Partners to help the team with the Project by giving the team advice, information, money, supplies, or labor. The team is responsible for managing the Project. The team should choose, create, design and control the Project and its components.

a. The team members must create the tournament Presentation without the assistance of Community Partners or non-team members. It is Interference for the team to accept help with the tournament Presentation.

6. For this Challenge, a Community Partner is a person who is not a team member, or a group with at least one person who is not a team member.

a. Team members identify and choose their Community Partners.

b. Team members are responsible for communicating with their Community Partners.

c. Team members may be members of a group that is a Community Partner. However, a Community Partner group is not required to have a team member as part of the group.

7. Project Brand: Corporations spend a lot of time and money creating brand identifi cation for their companies and products. Products with distinct identities tend to be successful. Schools and organizations use brands to raise awareness about events within their communities.

a. The team will create a Project Brand. For this Challenge, the Project Brand is the combination of a unique team-created Logo and a unique team-created Jingle.

b. The team is encouraged to research brands, logos, and jingles.

c. Logo: For this Challenge, the Logo is a unique team-created graphic used to identify the Project or some part of the Project. The graphic may include letters, words, symbols, shapes, pictures, or any other product of the graphic arts. Effective logos are memorable and easy to recognize.

d. Jingle: For this Challenge, a Jingle is a unique team-created series of sounds designed to promote the Project or some part of the Project. Effective jingles are distinct, memorable and descriptive.

i. The series of sounds must be audible to the human ear.

ii. The sounds may include lyrics, words, vocal tones, instrumental music, or any other sounds the team chooses to create.

e. The Project Brand should be used to assist the team with meeting the Project goal(s).

f. The Project Brand must be designed and created entirely by the team members without the

assistance of Community Partners or non-team members. A Project Brand that includes non-original material or designs will not receive a deduction, but if the Appraisal Team thinks that too much of the team’s Project Brand is created from non-original material the team may be awarded fewer points for E.2.b and E.2.c. The Copyrights and Trademarks section of Rules of the Road provides additional guidance.

g. The team-created Project Brand must be included in the tournament Presentation.

8. Creating a thorough Project plan will make it easier for the team to carry out and evaluate the Project. A good plan will help to keep the team focused on the Project goal(s). The team’s Project plan may include:

a. A Project timeline.

b. Project activities.

c. A list of resources. The list of resources may include fi nancial, community, educational, reference materials, websites, businesses, friends, family, etc. Location and/or contact information should be included for each resource.

9. During the planning process, the team should consider how the success of the Project and the Project activities will be measured. The Project plan is for the team’s benefi t and will not be scored. However, the team will evaluate the Project. The team must include a thorough Project Evaluation in the tournament Presentation.

10. The team should read and understand the tournament requirements of the Challenge before designing and implementing the Project.

Special Note: Your team may enlist Community Partners to help with your Project. However, unless

otherwise stated, all Rules of the Road, including the Rules of Interference, apply to the Project Pre-

sentation, which is the tournament part of this Challenge.

1. The Presentation: Your team has worked hard to make your community a better place! Now is your chance to share your passion and your Project with the rest of the world. The tournament Presentation is your team’s venue to highlight your Project and the impact you made on your community.

a. The team must create a Presentation that theatrically presents the Project in a creative and effective manner. Theatrical techniques should be used to create an engaging live Presentation that is interesting and informative.

b. The team’s Presentation should enable the audience to clearly understand some of the main components of the Project, such as:

i. The community need.

ii. The reason the team chose the community need.

iii. The goal(s) of the Project.

iv. The main Project activities the team completed or intends to complete.

v. The results of the Project and the impact it had on the community.

c. The live theatrical Presentation may include team-created photographs and recordings of team members, non-team members, and animals as long as they are treated with care and respect.

i. Recordings used in the live theatrical Presentation must be created, produced, and edited by the team members.

ii. Team-created recordings may contain images and sounds that were not originally created or recorded by team members. If the Appraisal Team thinks too much of the Presentation is created from non-team-created images and sounds, the team’s scores may refl ect this. (See Rules of the Road, Rules of Interference, Section 17.)

iii. Items that only appear in photographs and recordings do not need to be included on the Expense Report.

iv. All pre-recorded images and sounds should be clearly visible and audible from 25ft (7.62m) away. Appraisers will only reward points for what they see and hear during the Presentation.

d. The team will earn points for:

i. Effective portrayal of the community need and Project. (E.1.a)

ii. Overall creativity of the Presentation. (E.1.b)

iii. Effective use of theatrical techniques in the Presentation. (E.1.c)

2. Project Brand: The Project Brand (Logo and Jingle) described in Section A.7 must be included at least once during the Presentation to receive score for E.2.a-d.

a. The Project Brand must be effectively integrated into the Presentation.

b. The Project Brand should be visible and audible from 25 feet away.

c. The Jingle may be pre-recorded or presented live during the Presentation.

d. The team will earn points for:

i. Effective integration of the Project Brand into the Presentation. (E.2.a)

ii. Creativity and originality of the Logo. (E.2.b)

iii. Creativity and originality of the Jingle. (E.2.c)

iv. Quality, workmanship, and/or effort that is evident with the Project Brand design. (E.2.d)

3. Project Evaluation: Setting Project goals and having a solid plan in place is important. However, things do not always work according to plan. It is valuable to take a look at the different parts of the Project and evaluate what worked well and what did not work well.

a. The team will create a thorough Project Evaluation by evaluating the overall Project and all of its components.

b. The team will communicate the Project Evaluation to the audience during the 8-minute Presentation. The team will use a team-created Project Puzzle (B.4) to help integrate the Project Evaluation into the Presentation.

c. A thorough Project Evaluation will be different for every Project. A thorough evaluation may include, but is not limited to: project description, results of the Project, effectiveness of the Project Brand, impact of the Project on the community, successes and opportunities for improvement.

d. The team will receive points for:

i. The thoroughness of the Project Evaluation communicated to the audience during the Presentation. (E.3.a)

ii. Creative integration of Project Evaluation information into the theatrical Presentation. (E.3.b)

4. Project Puzzle: (Like puzzles, Projects address community needs that are not always easily solved.) The team will use a team-created Project Puzzle to integrate portions of the Project Evaluation (B.3) into the Presentation.

a. The team will design and create a Project Puzzle. For this Challenge, a Project Puzzle is a single physical product that is formed by putting a group of at least fi ve separate physical items together. Each separate physical item must symbolize some part of the Project.

b. The team will incorporate the formation of the Project Puzzle into its Presentation.

c. Items will be considered put together when they are placed into a single structure or arrangement. The items may or may not be physically connected.

d. Each separate physical Project Puzzle item and the completed Project Puzzle should be visible from 25ft (7.62m) away.

e. The team will earn points for:

i. Each item, up to fi ve items, that are combined to form the Project Puzzle during the Presentation. (E.4.a)

ii. Effective integration of the Project Puzzle formation into the Presentation. (E.4.b)

iii. Creativity and originality of the Project Puzzle design. (E.3.c)

5. Team Identifi cation Sign: Your team should provide a free-standing Identifi cation Sign (ID Sign) displaying your team’s Team Name, School/Organization Name, Team Number, and Level. It needs to be approximately 2ft x 3ft (0.61m x 0.91m) and cannot be used as a scoring element. (See “Team Identifi cation Sign” section in Rules of the Road.)

In addition to the above requirements, the team must present TWO creations called “Team Choice Ele-ments” that show off their interests, skills, areas of strength, and talents. The team may create anything they wish for Team Choice Elements including props, music, technical gadgets, costumes, physical ac-tions, etc.1. The team must present both Team Choice Elements as part of the eight-minute Presentation and each

Team Choice Element should have a meaningful connection to the team’s Central Challenge solution. Each Team Choice Element must be described briefl y on the Tournament Data Form found at the end of this Challenge.

2. A Team Choice Element may not be a specifi c item that is required in the Central Challenge that is already being evaluated. A Team Choice Element MAY be a single unique PART of a required item, as long as it can be evaluated as a stand-alone item. Both Team Choice Elements may be presented at the same time ONLY IF both can be easily identifi ed and scored separately. Examples of these can be found in Rules of the Road.

3. Each Team Choice Element will be evaluated in three ways: for the creativity and originality of the Team Choice Element, and for the quality, workmanship, or effort that is evident and integration into the Presentation. Evaluation of Team Choice Elements is subjective.

1. Floor Surface: Destination Imagination strongly suggests that the Presentation Area be a large space with a hard fl oor such as wood, linoleum, concrete or very short-napped carpet. The team should be prepared to deal with a variety of fl oor surfaces.

2. Size: The minimum required overall size of the Presentation Area is 8ft x 10ft (2.44m x 3.05m), but the team may use any additional space that Tournament Offi cials designate as available.

3. Electrical Power: A single 3-prong electrical outlet will be provided at the edge of each Presentation Area for the team’s use.
