PAM COOPER’S PATHWAYS: Mosquitos have always been a challenge in Florida
Mosquitos prevented the settlement of Florida! This is one of several reasons supported by historians. In 1824, Mosquito County included most of eastern Florida. The name most likely scared anyone who desired to move south. Settlement of the town of Narrows (now called Johns Island or Indian River Shores) began in the 1870s. The farmers benefited from the ocean breezes to “blow away” the mosquitos to the mainland. In fact, the newspaper often referred to the migration. “This section has been blessed so far this summer with an exemption of the mosquito pest. This with almost continual sea breezes has made it a very pleasant season.” (Florida Star, August 1900) “Last week Narrows was inquiring for their ‘lost, strayed or stolen’ mosquitos. Guess some of them came here as we have had an oversupply of a most vicious kind here lately. Wish the owners would come and get them. ‘No charges’
to pay.” (Sebastian Sept. 9 1905) “The Narrows correspondent said the mosquitos had all gone. Well, we suppose they have, for we had a light shower of them here a few days ago. We would be glad if they would go back home, for they have steel pointed bills and we do not like them a bit.” (Fort Drum Sept. 15, 1905) Early pioneers used palmetto brushes at the door
to brush them off before they walked inside. Everyone had smudge pots. Many also wore veils over their faces. On June 25, 1925, the Indian River Mosquito Control District declared in the local newspaper: “Vigorous Warfare against Pests in Indian River County.” However, it was not until 20 years later, during World War II, that DDT was first introduced to eradicate those annoying pests.

Six bite-size Lemmon Drops to nibble on while waiting for the start of football season:
• The official name is Elmer’s Trading Post, but I suspect most people call it Elmer’s Flea Market. I’ve never been to the flea market, which operates on weekends, but all you have to do is drive past it on southbound U.S. 1 (south of Oslo Road) to see how popular it is. The end is near for Elmer’s, though. Its last day will be Aug. 30. Elmer Arendas started the flea market in 1977, but Pete and Mary Lou Marini have owned it since ’86. (Pete and Mary Lou had two partners until 2005.) They kept Elmer’s as the name of the business. The land on which Elmer’s sits is owned by the nearby Toyota dealership. It bought the land from the Marinis and their partners in ’05. Then, after Pete and Mary Lou split with the partners, they leased the land from the Toyota dealership.
“It’s been a handshake lease,” Pete Marini said. On July 20, Bob Quaile, owner of the auto dealership, called Pete to let him know Elmer’s will need to vacate the premises by the end of August. Pete said there were no hard feelings. “Bob said it was time,” he said. “We feel blessed we got 10 years longer than we thought we would.” Mary Lou admits she has shed a few tears the past couple of weeks. “It’s like losing your family,” she said. Mike Bushman, who owns Recycled DVDs, called Elmer’s “the launching ground” for his business at 937 Seventh Ave. in Vero Beach. He still sells DVDs on Sundays at Elmer’s. “I did the flea market for about 3 years before I made the

jump,” he said. “As much as I hated getting up at 5 a.m., packing and unpacking the truck, and standing in the hot sun all day, I really enjoyed the comradery shared between the vendors, and talking with the customers about their favorite movies.” On Aug. 8, Pete and Mary Lou Marini will celebrate their 56th anniversary. There’s a photo of them standing next to their food truck on LemmonLines.com.• It’s a subtle name change, but going from Vero Beach Municipal Airport to Vero Beach Regional Airport is a great move for the future.• What’s the deal with Bank of America closing the drive-thru lanes at its local branches? I tried to get the rationale behind the move. Not surprisingly, I was directed to a corporate spokesperson in New York. Closing the drive-thru lanes is just another example of a decision made at the “corporate” level without any regard to the local market. The same type of thing happened when Scripps owned the Press Journal – don’t get me started!
• How cool is it that Jen Welter, a Sebastian River High School graduate, became the first female coach in NFL history? She’s an assistant coach for the Arizona Cardinals at least through training camp. As of last week, the number of people following her on Twitter had jumped to nearly 65,000!• Radio personality Alicia Marshall is the subject of this week’s “Meet me at Table 51” feature on page 6. One of her pet peeves is people incorrectly pronouncing her first name. It’s “A-lish-a” (not “A-lee-sha”). OK, I plead guilty to pronouncing it the wrong way all these years! By the way, I asked her about Alicia Florrick – the main character on “The Good Wife” – and she said she has never watched the show. Stunner!• Yes, I really did get a burr haircut. (See the new mug shot on page 4.) As the headline of a recent blog entry says, “Help! I’ve turned into my dad!”

Meet me at Table 51
Some trivia: Whether at Bob Evans or C.J. Cannon’s, Russ and his wife usually eat breakfast at Table 51. In what will be an occasional feature, Russ breaks bread with someone you may or may not know.
Alicia Marshall’s work experience is anything but ordinary. She spent two years in China teaching English. Then, upon returning home, she landed jobs with a radio station and a company that builds submarines. If you listen to 93.7 FM between 3 and 7 p.m. weekdays, you know her as “A.J.” Alicia, 30, starts her day at Triton Submarines. She does marketing and is a sales assistant. (In case you’re wondering, the base price of a submarine is $2.2 million and they can go up to $30 million! No, she doesn’t receive commission.) “I have two awesome jobs – I really do,” she said. Two years ago, when I was still at the Press Journal, I
wrote a column about Alicia going to China for a second year to teach English. At the time, she had a summer job doing marketing for Treasure and Space Coast Radio. The funny thing is, in listening to The Breeze for the past several months, I had no idea “A.J.” was Alicia. My jaw dropped when general manager Jim Davis told me. While on the air, she’s bubbling with enthusiasm. “I want to sound ‘happy’ 100 percent of the
time,” she said. “If I’m not, you can hear it in my voice. So, I smile when I talk.” She actually got her on-air start working the overnight shift on 94.7 FM, which is Treasure and Space Coast Radio’s country station. She went by the name “The Midnight Raven.” She hopes to stay in both jobs for years to come. “I think I’m meant to be rooted here,” she said. “This is home.”
