PAM COOPER’S PATHWAYS: Confederates made use of Indian River during Civil War
Florida was not as much involved in the Civil War as its neighboring states. However, there were a few incidents of blockade runners in Vero Beach and Sebastian. There were no battles, but many ships were lost. The Confederates needed supplies for their troops and often they used the Indian River as their main route in order to hide. At the Narrows (John’s Island area) on Feb. 4, 1863, a boat crew, including seven refugees from the USS Sagamore, under the command of Acting Masters Mate H.S. Crain, made a reconnaissance up the St. Johns River. Near Indian River Narrows they came upon the Confederate schooner Pride which was captured. Destroying 47 sacks (188 bushels) of salt, they returned to the inlet with boat and prisoners and turned them over to the commander of the Union, on the bark Gem of the Sea. In the same year on Feb. 23, boats from the USS Sagamore
seized a schooner and took the sloop Charm and 11 men and an unnamed, unmanned boat loaded with cotton in the Indian River south of the Sebastian River. An interesting note is the last Confederate widow to receive a Civil War Pension in Indian River County was in 1962. Annie Joanna (Joie) Ruffner, who lived in Sebastian was married to Lt. Col.
Henry D. Ruffner. Their home still stands on Indian River Drive in Roseland. For further research on the Civil War in the Indian River County area, there is a bibliography and a file on the veterans buried in the county. Joe Crankshaw, author and a former reporter for Treasure Coast Newspapers, authored a timeline of events in the area. This is available in the Heritage Center publication found in the library.Pam Cooper is supervisor of the Archive Center & Genealogy Department at the Indian River County main library.

Monthly attendance (in order of popularity) at Vero Beach’s three public beach parks in 2015:
JUST WONDERING: How many people went to Vero Beach’s three beach parks in 2015?
Six bite-size Lemmon Drops to nibble on while waiting for the next wave of Powerball fever:
• As the only daily newspaper in Vero Beach, the Press Journal has long been “the Big Dog” of the local media. The weekly Vero Beach 32963 is now aggressively going after that title. Last month, 32963 publisher Milton Benjamin placed an ad on the website JournalismJobs.com that was like a shot across the bow to the Press Journal’s future owner, Gannett, which publishes Florida Today, the dominant newspaper in Brevard County. “Having ousted Scripps as the #1 news organization in Vero Beach, then expanded our newspaper dominance during the short time Journal Media Group owned the local daily, our weekly newspaper, Vero Beach 32963, is gearing up for a new challenge in early 2016 when Gannett takes ownership of the daily paper.” The next sentence in the ad made me laugh because of
Benjamin’s chest-beating. “We have more than twice as many editors, reporters and photographers here in Indian River County as the daily – but we want MORE.” There’s no denying 32963 has more newsroom personnel based in Indian River County than the Press Journal. Meanwhile, the newspaper is 32963’s top priority. In contrast, the Press Journal is a “digital-first newsroom” with Twitter and Facebook playing big roles in its news strategy. Knowing that difference in philosophies makes this paragraph from 32963’s ad even funnier (because it’s like an inside joke): “We couldn’t care less if you have never tweeted a single tweet, have no followers on Facebook, and no clue how to shoot video on your iPhone. We are about long-form print

journalism. If you need 1,000 or 1,500 or (gasp) 2,000 words to tell a compelling story, you’ve got it! “If you’ve got the journalistic chops, we are prepared to pay a competitive salary. And by the way, our beachside community is one of the nicest places to live and work on earth.” I found it curious that Benjamin did not mention 32963’s sister publication, Vero News, in the ad. Vero News has a larger circulation, but 32963 has the deserved reputation of being a must-read.• The site where Denny’s used to be on U.S. 1 (in the Kmart Plaza vicinity) is being cleared for a small commercial development. The main attraction will be Moe’s Southwest Grill. The matchmaker for the site was Billy Moss, a broker with Lambert Commercial Real Estate. “I was working on (Moe’s) for years,” he said. Moe’s is expected to open in late spring or early summer.• At the intersection of U.S. 1 and eastbound County Road 512
in Sebastian, there are two gas stations – Speedway and Mobil. They always have the same gas prices. Always! Here’s what I’d like to know: Which station is usually the first to change the price? (Or, to put it another way, which station plays follow the leader?)• Doesn’t it seem strange there are TWO Howard Johnson hotels in Indian River County? I mean, this is 2016, not 1972. • In last week’s issue, I wrote about Carl Miller and his hope FDOT will delay the Oslo Road interchange on I-95 for 5 to 10 years. Shouldn’t be a problem, according to former County Commissioner Art Neuberger. It’s not going to be a simple process. “I’ll predict completion no sooner than 2040,” Neuberger said. Whoa!• Is it a rule that voices in radio commercials for auto dealers must cause listeners to have a “fingernails on the chalkboard”-type reaction? If so, I’m there.

The Treasure Finder
Twenty-six Florida Highwaymen artists were inducted into the state’s Artists Hall of Fame in 2004. Eleven of these magnificently talented artists have died – the latest being Carnell “Pete” Smith, who passed away on Dec. 15. These 26 individuals represent the beginning of the “Indian River School of Art.” These Highwaymen created their individual styles of painting of the landscapes, waterscapes, marshes, lagoons and inlets in the Treasure Coast and throughout Florida. The majority of the 15 living Highwaymen live in Vero Beach and Fort Pierce. The ages of the living Highwaymen range from 65 to the mid-80s. The living Highwaymen are still painting. (The Rev. Sylvester Wells has been blind for the past few years and is unable to paint.) Some of their individual styles have changed with time. They usually can be found at local art shows and exhibitions. They are legends never to be forgotten.
The Highwaymen are now more popular than ever – a movie about them is in the planning stages. Some of the Highwaymen will display their unique and breathtaking Florida landscape paintings at the 5th annual Jetson’s Highwaymen Art Show at the Jetson Store, 4145 S. U.S. 1, in Fort Pierce on Jan. 30 (from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.). They will have their art and books available for purchase.
This is your opportunity to mingle with these talented artists. Those scheduled to attend include Curtis Arnett, Al Black, Mary Ann Carroll, Willie Daniels, James Gibson, Isaac Knight, R.L. Lewis, John Maynor, Roy McLendon and Willie Reagan. Doretha Hair, widow of Alfred Hair, will also be participating. John Jetson’s magnificent Highwaymen collection will be on display. Ralph Oko is host of “The Treasure Finder Roadshow” on WAXE 1370 AM and 107.9 FM. The one-hour show airs Tuesdays at 4 p.m. and Sundays at 5:30 p.m.

Russ Lemmon, who loves music (and lists), spent a lot of time putting together his Top 500 favorite songs of all-time. For the next few years, Lemmon Lines will be counting ‘em down.
Indian River County’s website (ircgov.com) has seen the number of page views skyrocket in recent years. During fiscal year 2014-15, the website had 3.1 million page views. Two years before, the number was 1.8 million. The projection for the current fiscal year is 3.5 million page views.
