PAM COOPER’S PATHWAYS: Ercildoune was a major plantation in Roseland

In 1882, Dr. Thomas Howard and Arthur L. Knight purchased the land at the northeastern tip of Roseland and named it the “Ercildoune Plantation.” There were at least three major plantations in the Roseland and Sebastian area. The name Ercildoune derives from a village in Berwickshire, Scotland, which is now called Earlston. It was alleged to be the residence of Thomas the Rhymer or Thomas of Ercildoune. The town square originally was laid out with a rose garden, perhaps a reason for the name given to Roseland. Thomas Knight sold the land to his brother-in-law Lawrence C. Moore in 1895 soon after the devastating freeze of 1894. It was called “Frost Proof Grove.” By January 1896, the Ercildoune Inn Hotel was completed and receiving guests. The building was about 200 feet long with a veranda 12 feet wide. Each room or suite of rooms opened upon the veranda and was equipped with baths and closets. It stood

upon a superb bluff, 40 feet above the rivers. They also had cottages. A dock was built on the Indian River Lagoon where Moore had his launch called the “Tartar.” He often took his guests for trips on the Sebastian River and to swim at Gibson Springs, which cannot be found today. Some early guests may have been President Grover

Cleveland, George Thorne (co-founder of Montgomery Ward) and actor Joe Jefferson (1829-1905). Professor W.H. Turner purchased the Ercildoune in 1916 for the purpose of making it into a preparatory school for boys. By 1926, it was being used as barracks for the construction crews of San Sebastian Development Company. During Depression years, people tore down the hotel bit by bit to use the lumber for building their own homes.

Six bite-size Lemmon Drops to nibble on while waiting for Alabama to be crowned the college football champion:

• What is it about Wawa that makes people so giddy? I guess we’ll find out in about six months. In case you haven’t noticed, the southeast corner of U.S. 1 and 12th Street is being prepped for the Pennsylvania-based company’s first convenience store in Indian River County. Billy Moss, a broker with Lambert Commercial Real Estate, said Holland Retail Advisors closed on the former Vatland property last week. The selling price was $3.3 million. “Wawa is definitely on the way,” he said. “They will be there in the second quarter of 2016 – either late spring or early summer. … All of the site plans have been approved. They should start building in January.” Moss attends trade shows around the country, and he sees how much attention Wawa receives. “Like I tell people, Wawa is the homecoming queen of the

commercial market right now,” he said. “If you go to any of the shows – Orlando, Las Vegas, Atlanta, or wherever – people are always gathered around their table.” Cumberland Farms opened three ultramodern convenience stores in the county in 2015, but, apparently, Wawa is on a different level. “It’s considered more of a restaurant with gas rather than a gas station with food,” Moss said. “Their food is phenomenal.” Moss suggested Wawa is the new Starbucks in terms being the “hip” place to hang out. He said a fast-food restaurant and 5,000 square-foot retail center will also be built on the former Vatland property, with Wawa the first to be completed.• As mentioned in this space last week, State Rep. Debbie

Mayfield is planning to move to Brevard County and run for State Senate. (She’s moving because she got married in October, and her husband lives in Brevard County.) The election is less than eight months away, and she won’t even start raising money until March. “It’s going to be a fast and furious campaign,” she said. I’ll say.• Congratulations to longtime Vero Beach Book Center employee Debbie Sentance, who was selected by James Patterson to receive a holiday bonus. The bestselling author is giving away $250,000, to be split among 87 employees of independent book stores across the nation. Debbie was the only person from Florida to make the cut. Debbie, who has worked at the Vero Beach Book Center for 23 years, doesn’t know who nominated her for the bonus. And, as of last week, she did not know the amount – if Patterson gives the same amount to the 87 recipients, she’ll receive more than $2,800.

What does she plan to do with the money? “Spread some good cheer,” she said.• For posterity’s sake, I note on the first day of winter the high temperature was 82 degrees and the price of gas was $1.85 (if you have a Cumberland Farms “SmartPay” card). Life is good!• Before we flip the calendar to 2016, I wanted to note a 2015 milestone – congratulations to Colkitt Air Conditioning for its 45th year in business. As someone who has been in business a mere 15 months, I can tell you 45 years is no small feat. Very impressive. The aforementioned Vero Beach Book Center is celebrating its 40th year.• Last summer, Richard Granata was driving through Illinois and came upon a town called Piper City. He took a picture of the sign, which noted a population of 850. As he pointed out, Piper Aircraft has 850 employees. That’s almost “Twilight Zone”-type stuff.

Meet me at Table 51

Some trivia: Whether at Bob Evans or C.J. Cannon’s, Russ and his wife usually eat breakfast at Table 51. In what will be an occasional feature, Russ breaks bread with someone you may or may not know.

I had known Andy Segal as the unofficial publicist for Vero Beach High School’s nationally known girls lacrosse program and as an executive in his family-owned business, AYS. (By the way, AYS, which deals in employee leasing and payroll services, stands for At Your Service.) I had no idea he performed wedding ceremonies. Last spring, while attending the wedding of Lindsay Smith and Travis LaJoie, I did a double-take when I saw Andy was going to preside over the service. Andy is a minister ordained by the Universal Life Church. He did it all on the Internet.

He has married six couples during the past decade. “If friends or family ask me to do it, I will,” he said. “I wouldn’t do it for someone I don’t know.” He says the couples he marries are either non-religious or it’s a “mixed marriage” (the people getting married are affiliated with different religions). Andy and his wife, Tracey, were married in 2002 by a friend ordained by the Universal Life Church. How did they come up with the idea? Believe it or not, it was an episode of the TV comedy

“Friends” – when Joey became ordained and presided over the marriage of Chandler and Monica. Andy takes what he does very seriously. Sometimes, he goes beyond what is asked of him. For example, one time he officiated the wedding, served as the videographer of the wedding, and took pictures at the reception. “If only I knew how to arrange flowers,” he said.

Russ Lemmon, who loves music (and lists), spent a lot of time putting together his Top 500 favorite songs of all-time. For the next few years, Lemmon Lines will be counting ‘em down.

In 2015, Vero Beach has tied or broken the record for daily high temperature more than 20 times. At the other end of the spectrum, Vero Beach has tied or broken the record for daily low temperature only 2 times.

Meanwhile, Vero Beach has tied or broken the record for daily rainfall 6 times this year.

Fun factsTop 500 countdown

All the songs thus far in the countdown can be found on LemmonLines.com.

311. “Manic Monday”(1986) The BanglesMemory: Prince wrote the song, but it wouldn’t have reached No. 2 without the vocals of Susanna Hoffs.

310. “Werewolves of London”(1978) Warren ZevonMemory: The lyrics are just plain silly, but it’s hard to resist “howling” along.

309. “Take Me Home, Country Roads”(1971) John DenverMemory: Pretty cool this is West Virginia’s state song.
