PAM COOPER’S PATHWAYS: Gifford post office established 116 years ago

The Gifford post office was established 116 years ago by James T. Gray, an African-American. In 1896, William S. Brown established a homestead in the same area and it was called Brownsville. James T. Gray was 54 years old, born in South Carolina and was the postmaster for over 10 years. He arrived in 1894 and worked in the citrus groves in the town of Woodley, which is present day Winter Beach. On July 9, 1900, he filed for a homestead (160 acres) that was located between 41st and 42nd Street on Old Dixie Highway. Today, that same area is still called the J. T. Gray’s town of Gifford. It may be a coincidence, but friend Charles Gifford (son of Henry) and Fannie Penny were married on June 21, 1900. Could the town be named in their honor? The Gifford family had arrived in 1887 and established

their home in the area between U.S. 1 and 20th Street. Their two-story home is still standing today at the corner of 9th Avenue and 20th Street. In 1909, a freight landing was built next to the railroad tracks. The Gifford truck farmers shipped their crates of vegetables and citrus to northern cities. Farmers on Orchid Island also transported their crops across the river to the Gifford landing.

By 1910, the area we call Gifford today had a post office, sawmill, two schools (one white and one black), railroad depot, and several businesses. Many of the early families had homesteads such as Alvin O. Espy (1900), William S. Brown (1896), Willie E. Geoffrey (1901) and Solomon Bennett (1904). In 1914, a hard-surface road was completed from Vero to Gifford. The road was about 2 miles long.

Seven bite-size Lemmon Drops to nibble on while waiting for March Madness to commence:

• It looks like Outback Steakhouse is going to be a next-door neighbor to Olive Garden. In the shopping area under construction along State Road 60 just west of 58th Avenue, we’ve known for months that Chick-fil-A is going to be one of the restaurants. Developers were waiting for a second restaurant to emerge. On Feb. 12, Outback paid the $1,000 fee to file a formal site-plan application, according to Ryan Sweeney, senior planner in the county’s Current Development division. Sweeney said filing a formal site-plan application greatly increases the chances of something being built. When asked how likely it is Outback will become a reality at that location, he put it at “75 percent.” It’s unknown whether Outback would continue to operate its restaurant on U.S. 1, and have two in Indian River County, or just have the one on S.R. 60.

Meanwhile, further west on S.R. 60, progress continues to be made on the site plan for a new Wawa and McDonald’s, which will be side by side. They will be on westbound S.R. 60 right before the exit for northbound I-95. Sweeney estimates they are 80 percent through the process, which has been going on for more than a year.• Those driving on 58th Avenue last week probably noticed the land being cleared north of Vero Lago. A new housing development will be going there. Brent Pine Preserve will have 134 lots and be built in two phases. The first phase will have 78 units. The 80-acre parcel was sold in October for $3.2 million. The new developer is the Minnesota-based DiVentures LLC.• Let’s hope things haven’t come full circle in Sebastian.

That’s to say, when I moved here nearly a decade ago, the Sebastian City Council was dysfunctional. Then, Richard Gillmor was elected and the city council cleaned up its act. However, who knows what’s going to happen after Jim Hill orchestrated the removal of Richard Gillmor as mayor.• Lois Cappelen, who is usually the first person you see when you enter C.J. Cannon’s, has supported Donald Trump’s presidential bid ever since he announced his candidacy in June. She says she voted for Trump on her absentee ballot for the March 15 Presidential Preference Primary, but she doesn’t like how he insults people. “He’s going to have to tame that down, a lot,” she says. Which candidate will get Chuck Cannon’s vote? “I don’t know right now,” he said. “I like and dislike a little about a lot of them.” My sentiments exactly!• Cheryl Madden posted this on the Lemmon Lines’ Facebook page on Feb. 18:

“Origins Behavioral Health Center, Vero Beach, was mentioned on ‘Dr. Phil’ today.”• The Indian River County Historical Society has an appropriate fundraiser scheduled for March 11. It’s called “An Evening with Teddy Roosevelt” and will be held at the Sebastian River High School auditorium. For tickets and information, call 772-778-3435.• My brother and his wife, who live in Indiana, made their annual visit last week. While recounting a stop they made at Publix, my brother mentioned something that most of us probably take for granted – that is, employees offering to take groceries to your car is a thing of the past where he lives. I told him Publix was so proud of its customer service (and rightfully so) that it currently has a TV commercial running in Florida. Unlike the Publix commercials before Thanksgiving and Christmas, you won’t get misty-eyed watching the one about its stellar customer service.

Meet me at Table 51

Some trivia: Whether at Bob Evans or C.J. Cannon’s, Russ and his wife usually eat breakfast at Table 51. In what will be an occasional feature, Russ breaks bread with someone you may or may not know.

Jane Young never dreamed of performing on Broadway. In fact, she was never in a high school play. At Indian River Estates, she has become a regular in the retirement community’s annual theatrical production. On Friday and Saturday, she’ll have a part in three songs in “The Fabulous Fifties.” This is the 11th year Indian River Estates has put on a play for its residents, and it’ll be the ninth time Jane has participated. “This is my level,” she said. “We have fun doing it.” Although the play isn’t open to the public, it’s bigger than you might expect. There are 65 people in the cast and

crew. Attendance is expected to be 150 each night. This weekend’s production will be the second time she has sung Patsy Cline’s “Crazy.” She also did it four years ago. She calls “Crazy” the best song of the 1950s. As she said, they do it for fun. Lyn Marvin has directed most of the productions at Indian River Estates.

Jane, 69, is a former Coronary Care Unit nurse. She was born in Pennsylvania and spent most of her career in Pontiac, Michigan, a suburb of Detroit, before retiring to Boca Raton. In the early ’90s, she helped launch a family business called Dynasty Marine Associates in Marathon. It ships big fish to all of the major aquariums in the world. She moved to Indian River Estates in 2004. Jane is a dedicated walker. She and friend Joe Guay walk at least six days a week at the Indian River Mall.

Russ Lemmon, who loves music (and lists), spent a lot of time putting together his Top 500 favorite songs of all-time. For the next few years, Lemmon Lines will be counting ‘em down.

March temperature extremes in Vero Beach … All-time high temperature in March: 93 (set on March 20, 2003). All-time low temperature in March: 26 (set on March 3, 1980). Note: Since 1942, there have been six days in March in which the temperature was 32 degrees or below.

284. “Drops of Jupiter”(2001) TrainMemory: A strange title, but the magic is in the lyrics. 283. “Another Day”(1971) Paul McCartneyMemory: One of Paul McCartney’s most underappreciated hit songs, if you ask me.

282. “I’ll Stand by You”(1994) The PretendersMemory: Chrissie Hynde’s voice is so soulful – especially in this song.
