1957Blythewood horse second in the nation

King Coe, Blythewood Farm’s stallion, has been rated second in the nation for 1956 on the basis of his off springs’ points won in the show rings. He ranked third in 1955 and his owner, David Neil, predicts that he might make fi rst place later this year.

The 18-year-old stallion was acquired by Bly-thewood from Earl Ford Stables of Canton, Ohio, in 1953. He is a fi ve-gaited animal, but has sired show ring winners in three-gaited, fi ve gaited, and fi ne harness classes. Neil said that approx-imately 60 mares will be bred to King Coe this year.

Among the horses to be shipped from Bly-thewood Monday to the Florida show will be Co-ed’s Daylight, daughter of King Coe. The mare is high point winner in her division in the East. Three other horses are being taken to the Greater Miami Horse Show at Dinner Key Auditorium opening on Jan. 31. Neil named the animals as Blythe’s Jaguar, Top Flight, and a pony named ‘Tis Possible. Top Flight is owned by Nancy Long of Dayton, Ohio. The three hors-es have been shown all over the nation and have a past record of winnings.

Postmaster has longest record of service in state

As National Postmaster’s Day was proclaimed for today, it was noted that Cleveland’s Postmas-ter James Anderson, has a state postmasters’ record. He has served in his offi ce longer than any other postmaster in Tennessee.

He completed 23 years of service on Nov. 18, and is now in his 24th year as postmaster here. He said that he was one of the fi rst post-masters employed under the Roosevelt adminis-tration.

Anderson said today that the postmaster’s gen-eral duties covered being the post offi ce cashier, keeping up offi ce correspondence, and general supervision of the offi ce. He said that over the years, he has had numerous unusual experiences with the mail which fl ows through the local post offi ce.

He pointed out a recent incident in which connection was made between a person in Washington State and a Clevelander through the mail. The Washington resident had placed her address in a bottle and set it afl oat in the ocean, and the Clevelander, while in service, had found it in the Philippine Islands.

Anderson continued to say that at the post offi ce this morning, he received a letter from a prisoner in an Alabama prison asking about some lost clothing which he thought the post offi ce might have.

Anderson said that despite the strange names and addresses which letters coming to the local offi ce contained, the postmen here were rather effi cient in fi nding the proper residents of the letters. He said that the improperly addressed letters did make for a lot of trouble for the post offi ce.

Anderson, who lives at 19 Legion Place, has lived in Cleveland for 42 years. He came here from Georgia. A veteran of World War I, he is a charter member of the American Legion and a member of the Postmasters Organization, VFW, and DAV.

30 acts in musical talent showThe fi rst annual Jaycee Musical Talent Show

was recently held at the Bradley High School Au-ditorium. The program was divided into senior and junior divisions and featured 30 acts.

The seven winners from the two divisions will make the fi rst of their appearances in local vari-ety shows tonight at Blythe Avenue School.

Winners in the senior division were listed in order of their placing as: The Four Saints, a quartet composed of Kenneth Howley, Joe Rod-gers, Buddy Brock, and Gene Cleghorn singing rock and roll style; Donald Lee with a piano boo-gie number; Wanda Moore playing the organ; and Ronnie Logan singing.

In the junior division, winners were Shelvia Dean Neyman singing a religious number; Linda Holloway singing a popular number; and Gay-nalle Parker also singing.

Some 500 to 600 persons viewing the show chose the winners through an applause me-ter. Prizes awarded the winners were ladies and men’s watches, $25 savings bond, a phonograph, camera set, record album, and a nine-piece salad set. All the contestants received honor certifi -cates from the Jaycees.

Fire damages bowling lanesJolly Jack Bowling Lanes, Mill Street S.E., was

damaged heavily by a fi re of unknown origin early this morning, the Cleveland Fire Depart-ment reported.

The fi re department said the building caught fi re shortly after 1 a.m. today. Two fi re trucks driven by Jess Chestnutt and Bill Wheeler, with 15 fi remen, went to the bowling alley to fi ght the blaze. Fireman Chestnutt said the fi re appeared to be all over the interior of the building. The rear of the structure also received damage he said.

Bill Jackson, manager of the bowling estab-lishment, said cost of the damage had not been estimated. He added that the building was damaged “considerably”, but not completely destroyed. The bowling lanes, electrical ap-pliances, and other equipment were damaged as well. The snack bar was harmed mostly by smoke. Owner of the building was listed as T.J. Marler, who owns Marler Chemical, also located on Mills Street.
