'As well as the Skittles Inn there was a thriving grocers store which was used by the new growing population in the world?s first Garden City'

Founded in 1907 The Skitt les Inn (now better known as the Settlement) was a local hub of activity. The road layout was dif ferent in those days and the main road ran past the building and under the railway where now the rear car park is located. As well as the Skitt les Inn there was a thriving grocers store which was used by the new growing population in the world?s f irst Garden City. Today the grocers is long gone as is the orchard at the rear of image two which was replaced by modern classrooms in more recent years.

The water trough has long since disappeared from the street scene but the latest version of the ?Skitt les Street Sign? remains in the same location. The old front door has been moved to allow better use of the room space inside as well.

How artists used the modern gardenFASCINATING JOURNEY WITH AWARD-WINNING DIRECTOR CHARTS THE RISE OF RADICAL IDEAS

Embark on a fascinating journey with award-winning Director Phil Grabsky at Broadway Cinema this April and discover how artists used the modern garden to explore radical new ideas.

Presented as part of the Exhibition on Screen series, Painting the Modern Garden: Monet to Matisse takes audiences on a sweeping journey to explore how contemporaries of Monet built and cultivated gardens as they explored expressive motifs, abstract colour, decorative design and Utopian ideas.

Guided by passionate curators, artists and garden enthusiasts, the live screening will offer an insight into the Royal Academy?s exhibition of Impressionists, Post-Impressionists, and avant-garde artists of the early twentieth century. It explores the rise of the modern garden in popular culture and the public?s enduring fascination with gardens today.

The celebrated series is produced by award-winning arts documentary maker Phil Grabsky, who will be joining Broadway Cinema audiences for a live Q&A after the film.

Jason Valentine, Venues Manager at Letchworth Garden City Heritage Foundation said: ?We?re delighted to

welcome award-winning film director Phil Grabsky to Broadway Cinema. Phil will be discussing his much loved documentary series Exhibition on Screen and offering our audience the chance to find out more about his fascinating career, bringing art to the big screen.?

With a film career spanning 25 years, Phil and his company Seventh Art Productions make films for cinema, television and DVD. His biggest project to date is the creation of a unique new arts brand: Exhibition of Screen. This brings major art exhibitions ? and the stories of both the galleries and the artists ? to a cinema, TV and DVD audience worldwide.

Richard has cited the Letchworth arts and crafts movement as a source of inspiration for his work and a key component in his development as an artist.

Laura Dennis, Visual Arts Curator of Broadway Gallery said: ? Richard?s vibrant and joyful paintings are the perfect way to celebrate the opening of the Broadway Gallery, and it?s fantastic to be able to show these wonderful works back in the artist?s home town??.

before attending the Royal College of Art from 1954 to 1957. From 1959 to 1961 he lived in New York on a Harkness Fellowship, producing work that was abstract and concerned with the formal use of space and colour.

His work is held in the collections of the Tate Gallery and Museum of Modern Art, New York. His first one-person show was at Green Gallery New York, followed by solo exhibitions at the Tate Gallery, Hayward Gallery, the Whitechapel Gallery and MoMA Oxford. There is a busy schedule of events ahead for Letchworth GC as the town's new BID manager gets set for an exciting first year in charge.

Tom Hardy, 25, has taken up the role following a five year spell running events for Hertford Castle. Born in Letchworth GC and currently living in the town, Tom is well placed to give the Garden City the dynamic thrust it needs to make an impact for the BID in 2016.

Commenting on his role at the BID Tom said: "We have an exciting year ahead in Letchworth town centre. The Business Improvement District (BID) is working hard to establish a strong events programme, weekly markets, car boot and live music events in the town centre. Our main objective is to ensure as many town centre businesses benefit from these events as possible"

While the town calendar is still being finalised the first scheduled event is probably one of the biggest as the Letchworth Food and Drink Festival is set to be held on May 28 and 29. Always a well attended festival, it will once again play host to music arenas, other entertainment and of course numerous food stalls and

food demonstration stages .

Commenting on the food festival, Tom said: "The festival is set to be the biggest one yet, we are working with traders and local community groups to offer visitors a more exciting and varied experience. As well as live music, food, garden and drink stalls, there will be a scouts cookery competition, whisky tasting classes, bake off competition, kids food art activities and lots more! This year we are holding the first Food

and Drink Festival Taste Trail. During the festival, members of the public will use the Taste Trail map inside the Food and Drink Festival programme to navigate their way through the town trying the wide variety of food and drink on offer. Each shop will have a table inside their premises with a selection of food/drink tasters which they would normally sell on a day to day basis"

There are also plans for a number of other events including a Town Centre Take Over event in July, beer festival in October and the Christmas Lights Switch On in November. Tom is also hoping that a change of scene will help with his new role as he is all set to move into the Letchworth Tourist Information office.

"Letchworth Garden City town centre has great potential to bring in large numbers of visitors. These events and markets are aimed at showcasing the town centre and encourage long term increased trade. With new footfall counters being installed, we will be able to monitor the footfall and prove that these events are increasing the footfall and in-turn the success of town centre businesses," said Tom.

There are also some fantastic sponsorship opportunities for local businesses to gain maximum exposure to a large audience at our major events.

To contact Tom about sponsorship, t he BID or t o discuss events t aking place in Let chworth, email bid@lovelet chworth.com

Food lovers have proved themselves hungry for a huge helping of the Letchworth Food and Drink Festival taking place in in Letchworth Garden City Town Centre on 28th and 29th May from 10am to 4pm.

Organised by The Letchworth Garden City BID, this year?s festival will be a celebration of local gastronomy and is set to be packed with local produce, culinary activities, a free taste trail and various food and drink classes and demonstrations.

Town centre cafés, pubs and restaurants are joining in the local spirit of the Festival by taking part in the new Taste Trail. During the festival, members of the public will use the Taste Trail map inside the Food and Drink Festival programme to navigate their way through the town trying the wide variety of food and drink on offer.  Each shop will have a table inside their premises with a selection of food/drink tasters which they would normally sell on a day to day basis.

The Scouts, Guides and Cadets will come together on Leys Square for a large cookery competition being run over both days of the festival. The

Letchworth Arts and Leisure Group will be running a bake off and whisky tasting classes as well as the world champion gnome bowling competition in the garden Square shopping Centre! The Letchworth Garden City BID have also organised a children?s theatre tent and Food Art tent on Leys Avenue and in the Wynd.

As well as all this, the Garden City Bakery and R & E Family Butchers are supporting and organising a hotdog eating completion on the

mains stage. If you are feeling up to the challenge, applications will be available in the coming weeks.

This Year?s festival is sponsored by Wentworth Kitchen Trade who have been creating beautiful kitchens for over 15 years with a proven track record in customer satisfaction. Visit www.wentworthstalbans.co.uk for more information

When Letchworth was being established, in the early years of the twentieth century, many visitors came to view the growing town. Some were merely curious to see for themselves this new experiment in Utopian living; others genuinely intended to make their homes here. First Garden City Ltd. employed a local man George Aylott to show people around the Garden City estate.

George Aylott was born in Hitchin in 1858 and worked there as a postman. It seems he may not have enjoyed good health as by about 1902 he had retired on a postal pension. For the last few years of his life ? he died in May 1912 ? he was the ?official guide? to Letchworth. There is a photograph of Mr Aylott outside his office near the railway station ready to lead visitors around the town.

George Aylott may not have had much formal education but he was recognized in north Hertfordshire as an amateur archaeologist and an antiquarian, who wrote many articles for the Transactions of the East Herts Archaeological Society. He was also the author of several small books, including a history of Letchworth Hall and ?Walks in and around Letchworth?.

As an active member of the Letchworth Naturalists? Society he collaborated with Percival Westell to urge the setting up of a local museum to show archaeological finds from the local

area and displays of natural history. Alas, he did not live to see its opening in October 1914. As a self-taught artist, George illustrated

his own writings and North Herts Museum holds two drawings by him of Hitchin scenes.

Such was George Aylott?s local esteem that many notable Letchworth figures attended his funeral at the Baptist Chapel in Tilehurst Street, Hitchin, but it would be fascinating to learn more about this early Letchworth publicist. Can our readers add to this short account of an interesting man?

Relaunch of the Heritage Awards

28

The Letchworth Garden City Heritage Foundation is re-introducing Heritage Awards to reward the best examples of improvements to people?s homes over recent years.

The categories are for best extension or alterations to homes in the Heritage Area and a separate category for more modern parts of the town, most improved property frontage and best commercial building.

David Ames, Head of Heritage and Strategic Planning for the Foundation said: ?The Heritage Awards are an opportunity to celebrate homeowners undertaking good quality extensions and alteration to their properties. We have not had these awards since 2011 and this year they also include categories for best changes to a commercial building and best changes to a front garden. We hope as many people enter as possible.?

Entries have now closed and nominations were made by anyone, even if people have just seen a property that has impressed them.

Awards have not been issued since 2011, so anyone can enter if they have undertaken improvements that alter the external appearance of their home since that time.

A shortlist will be prepared shortly, followed by judging by local and national experts in May.

There will be an award for each category and then a public vote for the best overall winner, which will be presented at a ceremony in the autumn.

Further information can be found at http:/ /www.letchworth.com/heritage-awards Alternatively call 01462 476017 or email [email protected]

Sam helps to launch new theatre project

29

Actress Samantha Womack launched a project to create a new 400-seat theatre in Letchworth Garden City this week, as part of a £4million investment in the arts which also sees a gallery opening in the town later this week.

Sam, whose career has made her a household name in television and theatre, lives locally and is excited at the prospect of the first major professional theatre in the town, as an addition to the Art Deco Broadway Cinema.

She said: ?It?s really exciting to have this new theatre locally, in this lovely building. We have had many happy visits to the cinema and I look forward to the theatre coming this autumn.?

The theatre marks a major investment in the arts by Letchworth Garden City Heritage Foundation, who are using the revenue from their unique Garden City legacy to make the town a major centre for the Arts.

Also opened in the town is the new Broadway Gallery ? with a major show by international modern art pioneer Richard Smith. Smith was born and raised in Letchworth Garden City and went on to have his work showcased at the Venice Biennale and the Tate Gallery.

Colin Chatfield, Chairman of Letchworth Garden City Heritage Foundation said: ?It is great to have Sam Womack along to launch the build of our new theatre, and highlights the calibre of actors and shows we will attract when the theatre opens later this year. It?s going to be an exciting year for the arts in Letchworth.?

Work on the theatre has begun in earnest, with builders working seven days a week in order to keep the work as short as possible while allowing the cinema to remain open. During the building work the cinema will be open Monday to Friday from 4pm, and from 3pm at the

weekend.

Work has been carefully planned to ensure it is in keeping with the cinema?s beautiful Art Deco design. Dressing rooms and a stage will be added to Screen One so it can be changed from a cinema to theatre, and back, overnight, allowing it to host theatre, children?s shows, live comedy and acoustic music, as well as mainstream films. It will also create a new bar area and add an air cooling system.

The work will continue until late 2016 with theatre previews and back stage tours taking place in November ahead of the first theatre season in 2017.

Further details of the theatre plans are available online at www.broadway-letchworth.com

#HertsHour is a useful tool to help develop your brand online and it 's not hard. Most importantly, it 's free and if you dedicate an hour a week to it, it could be very valuable.

Whenever you're using social media, the more you put in, the more you get out. Twitter works best when it 's a conversation - or a series of conversations.

If you just use it to post your own words of wisdom, it 'll quickly get very lonely out there, especially if you use a bot to schedule tweets and fail to follow them up.

The most regular #HertsHour contributors are those who log on fairly promptly at 8pm on a Monday and then welcome others as they join and begin to converse with several people.

They'll be the ones others follow and the conversation then spreads throughout the week - with or without the #HertsHour tag.

There's a few simple rules to remember:

* Get involved and respond to what others are saying.

* Ask people about their businesses.

* Don't post more than a couple of

blatant plugs - it puts people off, especially when there's a stream of them.

* Make sure in advance that your Twitter profile is complete and if it directs people to a website, that 's up to date, too.

* Follow up with people during the week.

* Find out about what your competition is up to - they're usually just as nice as you are!

* Always use the #HertsHour hashtag as that 's what most people search for.

If you want to find out more, take a look at the rest of the #HertsHour website, including the Business Directory and our Facebook page.

WEB ADVICE IN ASSOCIATION WITH CLIMBING TURN SOFTWARE DEVELOPERS

Don't get hooked up on a phishing scamIn this month?s article we?ll be looking at scam emails and how you can avoid being tricked by them.

But f irst, some facts and f igures ? Unsolicited emails (known as spam) now account for around 14.5 bil l ion messages, globally, per day; that?s 45% of all emails. Some estimates are even higher at over 70% of all emails. Most of these emails are harmless and can be categorised as simply ?junk mail?, however a small proportion (maybe 2% to

3% ) are attempts at fraud or identity theft (known as phishing) or are tricks which are trying to install a virus on your computer.

Gone Phishing Phishing emails purport to come from reputable companies and are an attempt at tricking you into revealing personal information such as passwords or credit card numbers. Some of these emails are very cleverly constructed and look identical to emails which are sent out by companies such as Amazon and eBay. So how do you recognise

one when you see it? Firstly, have you bought anything from or had dealings with the company sending the email? If the answer is ?no? then you should ask ?why are they emailing me?? and proceed with caution. If the answer is ?yes? then proceed with caution anyway.

A very popular scam is a bogus email from Amazon tell ing you that your goods are on the way and you?ve been charged. Obviously if you haven?t ordered anything they hope you?ll react by clicking on a link in the email so that you can log in to your Amazon account to see what?s going on and cancel the order. The link will invariably lead to an accurate mock-up of Amazon?s login screen where you?ll enter your user name and password; only it is not Amazon?s website and as soon as you do this the scammers will have your Amazon login.

So, how do you identify a scam like this from Amazon or anyone else? If you read my very f irst article about the URL (web addresses) then you?ll recall that the answer lies in checking the web addresses (URLs) of the email sender and of the link they are asking you to click on. If you haven?t read this article then obviously I?d advise you to read it! But don?t worry, I?ll

Page 34: #Letchworth April May 2016

34

WEB ADVICE IN ASSOCIATION WITH CLIMBING TURN SOFTWARE DEVELOPERS

explain here as well. In the case of the email sender, make sure that the email has come from an address owned by the company who sent you the email.

In the case of Amazon the email should be sent from [email protected] (or amazon.co.uk) ? ignore the bit before the @, I made that up, it?s the bit after the @ and before the .co.uk or .com that?s important; it?s called the domain name and if the domain name doesn?t look right then the email probably isn?t legitimate. Now, the email sender?s address can be tampered with and made to look as though it?s coming from a reputable company so simply checking the domain name isn?t foolproof. However, the links they place in the email for you to click on can?t be easily spoofed but you must watch out for one particularly nasty trick: the visible link they place in the email (that is the address you see displayed) can be completely dif ferent to the address that will be opened when you click on the link.

Sometimes links are pictures in the email so you won?t know what web site address you?ll be sent to when you click on it. What do you do? If you?re using a desktop computer you should always hover over a link with your mouse before clicking it. When you do this you can read the link?s real web site address from the status bar at the bottom of your email program. If it doesn?t look right, don?t click it! Remember, the bit you?re interested in is the domain name; that?s the part of the address that comes immediately before the .com or .co.uk part. Ignore everything before and after this and make sure the domain name part is legitimate. If you?re using a tablet or smart phone you can?t hover over a link and check whether it is suspect or not. In that case, if you aren?t expecting the email then the safest bet is to treat it as a scam and delete it. If you?re brave, reckless or make a mistake and you do click on the link then when the site opens in your browser examine the web address carefully in your browser?s address bar (at the top of the screen).

Of course , if you do get an email and think that Amazon, eBay or anyone else is sending you something you don?t want and charging you for it, the safest bet is not to click on any links in their email and instead simply go to a browser and visit

the site yourself where you can log in. That way you know you?re visit ing the legitimate website.

Beware of attachments! All of the above advice is also true of emails which ask you to open an attachment. Be very suspicious of any email attachment unless you are 100% sure who sent it and that you are expecting it. If you know who sent it and you aren?t expecting it then stil l be very suspicious. It is quite common for our contacts (friends, family, colleagues etc) to go and get themselves infected with a computer virus which then sends emails to everyone in their contacts list with a virus f ile attached which, when opened, will infect the receiving computer. These emails depend entirely on the fact that you know the sender and therefore trust that email attachment is safe. It isn?t! Sometimes these emails simply contain a link to a website which, when clicked on, downloads the virus to your computer; no need for an attachment at all. Never open an email attachment unless you?re expecting it and always doublecheck the address of l inks before clicking on them. Most important of all ? make sure that your anti-virus software is up-to-date and that it is setup to scan your emails. Stay safe!

Finding work online is hugely popular. Job sites are designed to make searching and applying for roles as easy as possible, meaning you can apply for multiple jobs in a matter of seconds. The challenge you face is it is just as easy for other people to apply for jobs as it is for you, meaning employers and agencies alike get a huge volume of applicants CVs emailed to them on a daily basis. Competition is harsh, response time has lengthened and you probably won't receive any notification of unsuccessful applications or feedback. This makes it hard for you to assess why you haven?t been selected. After a period of time this can become a bit disheartening.

There are definite benefits and it is not something you should ever

disregard. It is quick and more companies now just take CVs rather than asking you to fill out lengthy application forms online. It also gives you an idea of the type of work available.

There is a range of recruitment agencies out there who you could contact that would be able to offer you great advice.

Once you've spoken to a member of staff, sent along your CV and maybe made some amendments the whole recruitment process is handled for you. They will line up interviews and position you for new jobs. Indeed they have had the benefit of meeting you and can discuss your skills and abilities as a person rather than just using your CV.

The agency you partner with will be

able to provide you with updates and are contactable throughout the day. They have a greater understanding of the recruitment market and can offer expert advice, not only on your sector, but also the standard of your CV and your expectations. Think about it like this; the agency team members have placed hundreds of people in work, and have relationships with the clients they work with so they can give you meaningful guidance and support. Secret garden tips

37

Sow new lawns and deal wit h bare pat ches

If you are hoping for a lovely patch of green for the coming year then now is the time to sow the lawn. Seed, when it is well cared for, will start to grow vigorously and of course seed sown now will also help to improve bare patches.

Increase t he amount of water given t o house plant s

As the seasons change, the amount of water given to different plants also varies. This is especially true of houseplants so as the temperature starts to rise make sure that the amount of water given also increases.

Feed shrubs and roses

As the weather improves, plants will want to get growing so make sure

that shrubs and roses are fed to allow them to make the most of the favourable conditions.

Start feeding cit rus plant s

Along with others, citrus plants need a little boost at this time of year to help growth so start to feed them gradually.

Sow hardy annuals and herb seeds

April is a great time to start sowing

hardy annuals and herb seeds and within no time you will see growth begin and great crops in later months.

Tie cl imbing and rambling roses

It may not seem like they will get out of hand but pretty soon climbing and rambling roses will be tough to tackle so make sure they are tied now ready for the growth to begin.

Beware late f rost s so protect f ruit blossom

The warm weather may be with us or just around the corner but late frosts can still strike so protect fruit blossom.

Keep on t op of weeds

If seeds and plants are growing then so are weeds so make a start on them now, if you don't keep on top of them in Spring there's a Summer of hard work ahead!

And don't forget as t he weather improves and t he warmer weather star t s t o arr ive, just get out int o your garden and enjoy it !

What is t he name of your char it y?TRACKS Autism

What is t he aim of t he char it y?To provide a calm environment for up to 10 children per 3.5 hour session, currently running 5 sessions over 4 days, 48 weeks of the year. We have a high ratio of dedicated and specially trained staff to help the children develop:

- the means and motivation to communicate with others

- the ability to play and become active learners- basic skills and understanding of the world

around them

Where are you based?TRACKS House, Boulton Road, Stevenage SG1 4QX

Do you have any special project s at t he moment? In 2015 we moved to our new pre-school premises at TRACKS House in Stevenage. As a result of the improved facilities there we have set in place exciting new plans scoped around three opportunities for our children for which we currently seek support.

These are:-

Sensory Circuits: We have been piloting a pro-active Sensory Circuits approach and the evidence is that it has been extremely beneficial to our children. We need to fund the input of an Occupational Therapist to compliment the work of our Teaching Assistants.

Intensive Social Skills Interaction: Children with an autistic spectrum condition can have serious problems with communication and social interaction. They have major difficulties understanding and expressing their

own needs or feelings. We urgently need the funding to buy in the expertise of a speech and language therapist.

The Kaspar Project: We are working in partnership with the University of Hertfordshire in developing the humanoid robot Kaspar. This robot acts as a mediator to enhance learning, social communication and social interaction, as well as the emotions of pre-school children with autism.

How can local businesses help you? Your support could be for a specific piece of work that we do with the children such as:

- sensory circuits- sherborne developmental movement- KASPAR the humanoid robot

You could sponsor a particular event, for example:

- to raise awareness of autism - to inform parents and professionals about the

vital work that we do- workshops to help parents manage family life

with a child with autism

You could sponsor a particular area of our building, such as:

- our sensory room- our art room- our outdoor sensory garden

When a bride embarks on a quest to find the dress of her dreams, it is probably fair to say that Asda doesn't feature too highly on her must-shop destinations. While a number of supermarket chains have ventured into the wedding dress arena, it is with a certain buyer in mind. The bride who buys their dress from Asda or Tesco won't want first class service, they won't mind sharing a changing area with a school child buying their first uniform or a man buying his work suit.

But that doesn't have to be the way it is. Reputable bridal boutiques move quality dresses into their sample sales on a regular basis to make way for new designs. The

gowns have come from quality bridal houses and they start to become more affordable once they hit the sale rail. Not only do you get a dress for a fraction of the original price, but you also get the experience of specialist bridal sales staff, who know how to style a dress to give you the look of your dreams.

There are no shopping trolleys involved. It is about a journey. From

working with a bride - whatever the budget - to ensure she feels like the princess she wants to on her big day. In many cases, the brides Heritage Brides have worked with have creatively changed a dress which was 'not quite the one'. It might be changing the shape of the neckline or adding in a sleeve (or taking them away) but it is about personalisation. It is about their personality and their vision which we believe is unlikely to be realised a few feet away from the frozen chicken.
