LETTER FROM MEMORY CARE ADMINISTRATORAnother year gone. We say goodbye to 2016 and hello to 2017. Looking forward to a wonderful new year. We continue along to provide the best care for our residents with dementia. It is important that we provide a safe, loving and caring setting for our residents. Daily activities is a very important part of daily living in memory care. It provides opportunities for our residents to work together with other residents and staff.
With a dementia resident, communication is very important and can someday be very frustrating. Here are some tips for best ways to communicate. Always identify yourself. Approach the person from the front. Tell them who you are. Call the person by name. This is not only courteous, it helps orient the person and gets their attention. Talk slowly and clearly. Give one-step directions.
Use short, simple words and sentences. Don’t overwhelm the person with lengthy requests or stories. Keep to the point. Ask one question at a time. Patiently wait for a response. The person may need extra time to process your request. Repeat information or questions. If the person doesn’t respond, wait a moment. Then ask again. Ask the question in the same way, using the same words as before. Turn questions into answers. Try providing the solution rather than the question. For example, say, “the bathroom is right here” instead of asking, “do you need to use the bathroom?” Treat the person with dignity and respect. Avoid talking down to the person or talking as if she/he isn’t here. Be aware of your tone of voice. Speak slowly, use a gentle and relaxed tone-a lower pitch is more calming. Pay special attention to your body language. Avoid sudden movements. Keep good eye
contact; if the person is seated, get down to that level. Make contact through touch, if appropriate.
Sincerely,
Steven Mays
Memory Care Administrator
