    The

    Honorable William

    Harrison

    3300

    Capitol Ave

    Fremont,

    CA 94538

    Dear Mayor Harrison,

    Generally, I

    do

    not weigh in

    on

local issues that fall outside of federal jurisdiction. However, as a South

    Bay

    native and

    longstanding champion

    of the

    environment, I want to

    share

    my

    thoughts on

    establishing

    Kimber

    Park

    as

    private

    open

    space.

    It is vitally important

    to our community

    that we preserve our

    environment

    and protect our open spaces.

    Not

only do these spaces shelter native wildlife and

    provide

    healthy spaces

    for outdoor enjoyment,

    natural

    lands also

    serve

    as carbon sinks

    and can

    help mitigate

    the

    effects

    of

    a

    changing

    climate. Kimber Park is a

local gem, teeming with wildlife, that

    ha s

    benefitted

    both

    the local community and

    people

    throughout the

    Bay

    Area

    and should

    be safeguarded

    for the benefit of

    future generations.

I believe every elected member at every level of

    government ha s

a role to p lay in fostering

    sustainable,

    smart development

    and

    in protecting

    spaces

    that

    make our

    communities unique

    and

    improve

    our

    quality

    of

life. When I was a County Supervisor, I created

    the Santa Clara

    County Open

    Space

    Authority,

    and

    as

    a

    member

    of the State

    Assembly

    I

    fought for millions

    in

    funding for

    the

    Nature

    Conservancy

    and

    expansion

    of Henry

    Coe

    Park.

    Now in Congress, I

have continued f ighting for the

    environment as a

    founding member

    of the

    House Sustainable Energy

    and

    Environment Coalition.

    Protecting

    our

    water,

    air, open spaces and

    California’s sacred

    wilderness is

    more

    than sound

    public policy

    it’s

    an

    obligation.

    I

    will continue fighting

    to

    ensure a safe,

    sustainable,

    and healthy

    future

    for our

    community. I’m

    encouraged

    by the

    great

    progress and development

    in

    Fremont, and

    I

    know that each of

    these

decisions is difficult In this case, I appreciate

    your thoughtful

    consideration and

    hope that

    you

    will

    designate

    Kimber Park

    as

    private

    open space.

    Sincerely,

    ‘iw~4   ~
