INHALED ANAESTHETIC AGENTS
VOLATILE ANAESTHETIC AGENTS ARE LIQUIDS WITH A LOW BOLING POINT AND HIGH SATURED VAPOUR PRESSURE SO THAT THEY EVAPORATE EASILY.
THE AIM IN USING AN INHALED ANAESTETIC AGENT IS TO ACHIEVE SUFFICIENT LEVELS OF ANAESTHETIC AGENT IN THE BRAIN AND NEURONAL TISSUE, WITHOUT A DETRIMENTAL EFFECT ON OTHER ORGANS.
ACHIEVEMENT OF SATISFACTORY BRAIN LEVELS OF ANAESTETIC AGENT OCCURS IN THREE STAGES:
- DERIVERY PHASE - PULMONARY PHASE - CIRCULATORY PHASE

Hayes A H, Mirakhur R K et al Postoperative residual block after intermediate-acting neuromuscular blocking drugs Anaesthesia, 2001, 56, pages 312—318
“The results of the present study suggest that the incidence of postoperative residual neuromuscular block is substantial, even with the use of neuromuscular blocking drugs of intermediate duration......However, the frequency is reduced if the block is reversed. Our results suggest that not only should the monitoring of neuromuscular biock be routine in order to guide the admnistration of optimal dosage of neuromuscular biocking drugs and to determine the adequacy of reversal, but also that correct interpretation of the responses is important. “
