From the Editor“A man travels the world over in search of what he needs and returns home to find it.”

George Moore hits the nail on the head with his definition of ‘home’. A home is where I find rest and rejuvenation. A home is where I find support and help. A home is where I find love and care, for who I am and not what I should have been.

Going home is always what I look forward to every day. I can enjoy a great meal with my family, I can watch my favourite TV programme, I can work on my computer and take my rest any time I want to, I can listen to music of the 80s reminiscing those nostalgic moments, I can do whatever my heart fancies at home.

But what is most important about my home is that it is a haven of rest and a haven of rejuvenation for my tired body and weary soul.

Congratulations on owning your new home. You must be proud of your new home. I have always kept close to my heart the exciting feeling of owning my new home. Well, that was years ago but I am still excited about going home because that is where I can be myself and I have all the support, love and care at home that the mercenary world never accords me.

Enjoy your home, and let us at Lobang Guru bring you tips and resources on your home essentials. We hope to contribute towards a better, a cozier and a happier home for you and your family.

Innovative window grilles Window grilles are an essential installation in any home because they keep your family safe from burglars, and prevent curious children from climbing the windows and balcony. However, traditional window grilles look somewhat like a ‘cage’. You feel trapped, and the aesthetics of your home may be compromised with traditional window grilles.

With the ‘Invisible Grille’, you will always enjoy the panoramic view from your windows and balcony without fear of any accidents that may occur, particularly when you have children playing at the balcony. Made of high tension cables, the Invisible Grille can withstand a tensile force up to 200 lbs. This simply means it cannot be cut by a child but can be easily dismantled by a fireman or an adult with an appropriate cutter in the case of a fire or other emergencies.

An optional extra that you can have is to connect the Invisible Grille to the alarm system in your home. And, not only does the Invisible Grille offers peace of mind and security for you and your family, it blends seamlessly with the interior décor and façade of your home.

Today’s kitchens combine beauty and style with functionality. Also, the advent of ad-vancement in technology has somewhat dictated the way kitchen appliances are built. You now prepare your meals in a stylish, comfortable and highly functional kitchen. Kitchen takes many shapes and designs.

Closed KitchensSuch kitchen prevents smoke and cooking smells from invading the rest of the home. Hence, to allow smoke to disperse quickly, it is ad-visable to fit a ventilator or window in your kitchen.

Made-to-measure closets and a series of shelves will help you keep your kitchen utensils in order, while adding a modern touch to the kitchen.

However, lighting takes on preemi-nence in a closed kitchen. The ideal place to install your lights is to place them above or in front of the work areas. This will prevent irritating shadows that can be rather dis-turbing when you are preparing your meals.

Open KitchensThese kitchens are usually divided into three areas: one for storage, one for preparation and one for cooking. These three areas will es-sentially form an ‘L’ or ‘U’ which is the most adopted layout for modern open kitchens.

Open kitchens will, in most instanc-es, have the advantage of a source of sunlight. Otherwise, the installa-tion of spot lights or incandescent bulbs or other lightings will provide the light you need when you pre-pare and cook your meals. And, these lightings strategically placed will help create differentiated space within the kitchen.

Kitchen IslandsInstalling an island that can serve as a central space in the kitchen or as a space for preparing or cutting food or simply as a dining table will meet the requirements of functionality and design of such kitchens.

The closet doors of the island that you installed should be appropriately positioned to open comfortably and provide enough space to move around the work area.

Styling Your KitchenContemporary designs and technological advances have created innovative and appealing kitchens with-out losing an iota of functionality. Kitchen equipment and appliances are getting more ‘intelligent’ with intui-tive and automatic control options.

While there are countless decorative options for any kitchen, the three major styles that are predominantly the options:

- Minimalist StyleThis seeks to take advantage of maximising space without neglecting functionality and design criteria.

- Urban StyleThis kitchen style is a reflection and adoption of the modern lifestyle and is mainly governed by systematic order and functionality seamlessly infused within the décor and design.

- Rustic Style You will be closer to and in touch with nature when you have a rustic style kitchen. The design is very much classical in expression with a sense of countryside flair in layout and style.

Whatever kitchen design and style you are deciding to have, these will be an expression of your personal style and lifestyle. So be yourself, never ape another’s kitchen style because you will be preparing and cook-ing your meals in your kitchen for the many years to come! What is important is that you enjoy the use of your kitchen as you whip out delectable meals for your family and friends.

Bon Apetit!

The bathroom is no longer just a place devoted to personal hygiene, it has evolved through the passage of time to become a space to spend a relaxing and refreshing private moment after a long day at work.

New accessories and decorative alternatives add personality to your bathroom, taking it way beyond its functional use to be a small haven of peace and privacy. Designs presently available make it possible to create a bathroom that is classical or state-of-the-art, rustic or minimalist, with a look at the past or with an empathy that has cutting-edge styles.

The idea of the bathroom as a space where you find health combined with relaxation is largely originated from Scandinavia and Japan. We will explore this aspect of the bathroom in the next issue of Lobang Guru.

Bathrooms can also contribute to romance, and take you on an exhilarating and romantic journey each time you step into the shower.

The Romantic Bathroom

What exactly is a ‘romantic bathroom’, you may ask.

The romantic-styled bathroom, or classical bathroom,

is usually characterised by its sobriety, elegance and

sophistication.

Such an ambience will require the use of traditional

furniture and complements, without resorting to install-

ing any more innovative options.

The romantic-styled bathroom attempts to acquire

beauty and harmony in furniture by means of comple-

menting and combining colours, lighting and appropri-

ate accessories. The use of pale and pastel colours

will give the romantic bathroom a touch of delicacy

that cannot be achieved with more contemporary

decorations.

A few more personal touches and the correct applica-

tion of the most trivial decorative details, like scented

candles and a plant, will endow your bathroom with

character, and certainly romance will flourish with

each shower time!

Let your creative juices flow

You can create a romantic bathroom with whatever space you have in your bathroom. While big spaces can

be filled with decorative, accessories, light and divided into clearly delimited areas, small bathrooms can be

decorated with highly practical means that take full advantage of the available space. What is most important is

that you can benefit from the functional purpose of your bathroom while using it to relax and refresh in privacy.

Tips for A Pleasant House Moving Experience

It is always an exciting experience to have a new home. But moving to your new home can be a tiring exercise when you aren’t prepared for it. Here are some tips for a more pleasant and enjoyable house moving.

1. Pack non-essential items well in advancePreparations to move to a new home can get tiresome over time. So begin with the packing of non-essential items.

2. Dismantle furniture or any items that needs taking apartDo this carefully and save any hardware in a bag. Mark them appropriately and tape them to a part of the furniture these are to be used with.

3. Wrap fragile items with bunched up papers, bubble wraps or foam wrapsNever use newspapers to wrap fragile items because the print residue can ruin porous items like clay pots or lampshades, etc.

4. Do use plenty of paper to line the boxesRemember to use plenty of papers to line the top, bottom and side of each box that you have packed. This could save costs fixing or replacing a broken part of a fragile item. Add cut-up pieces of cardboard in strategic places to cushion fragile items from knocking each other during transit and breaking.

The moving contractor you hire for your move will usually provide you with free boxes for you to pack your household items. They will also shrink wrap your furniture to prevent damages to them while moving them to your new home.
